T-Mobile promises HSPA+ tablets in 2011, Android's likely there somehow

2

T-Mobile just fed us a press release in which it affirms that HSPA+ tablets are coming in 2011. Here's the party line:

“T-Mobile is working closely with the majority of our OEM partners to deliver 4G products by integrating HSPA+ into roadmaps in 2011 as the dominant global standard. Consumers will continue to see HSPA+ fuel future innovation in a variety of mobile consumer electronics from smartphones and tablets to emerging devices. T-Mobile will continue to be at the forefront of wireless innovation, delivering an aggressive 4G product lineup in 2011, including 4G tablets.”

We asked, and TMo's refusing to say whether these tablets will run Android. And so we'll say it for them: There's a better-than-average chance that you'll see T-Mobile with an HSPA+ tablet in 2011. And if we don't, just do what I do. Blame Jerry.

After its impromptu appearance with Google's Andy Rubin last week, a few more specs belonging to the Motorola tablet (or tablets) reportedly are coming to light. According to Goldenstone at mobile01, they are:

  • 7-inch and 10-inch versions
  • 32GB storage
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 T20 dual-core processor
  • Gyroscope
  • 1280x800 resolution
  • 5MP camera on the back, 2MP on the front.
  • microSD
  • HDMI out
  • Versions for UMTS, CDMA and LTE (all bases covered!)

Goldenstone also mentions that it looks like the hardware's pretty set and is lightweight, but that Honeycomb still needs some fine tuning. Needless to say, folks, we can't get our hands on this one soon enough. [Mobile01 via Engadget]

Gmail 2.3.2 changes [video]

27

The changes that came along with the latest update to the Gmail app are pretty substantial.  Google seems to have listened to the users, and gave us the two things we've been whining asking about the most -- decent priority inbox support, and sending from another address.  And they managed to pull it off without slowing down the app, which is pretty damn important if you ask me.

The one drawback?  This is only available for Android 2.2 or higher.  We're seeing a lot of that, and we're bound to see more as Google updates its core applications to their 2.3 versions.  That's called progress, folks.  You can't stop it.  Hit the jump, and see it in action.

Fringe's Peter Bishop caught using Evo 4G with Qik for videocalling

25

It is pretty obvious by now that the creators of Fox's Fringe have a promo deal with Sprint because the Evo 4G just keeps popping up on the sci-fi show. The most recent episode featured Peter Bishop getting intel from team analyst Astrid Farnsworth using the Evo's video calling by Qik. Luckily for Peter, his choice of the Evo and Sprint let him take the video call without needing to hunt for an open WiFi network in suburbia. Head on over to the Android Central Forums to discuss all the Fringe Android sightings and check out the video past the break. Thanks to Dogan for the tip and video upload!
