Motorola Xoom finally getting its 4G LTE upgrade starting Sept. 29

20

Xoom 4G LTE starts shipping Oct. 13 for $499

We're starting to get word that the Motorola Xoom is finally getting ready for its upgrade to 4G LTE on Verizon. If you'll recall, the Xoom was the first Honeycomb tablet, announced at CES in January. At the time, we knew it was going to launch as a 3G-only device, with a hardware upgrade to come sometime later. And later. And later.

Many moons came and went. Scores of other excellent Honeycomb tablets have been released. Samsung released a 4G LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Verizon. And there still sat the Xoom, with its promise of an upgrade looking more and more tarnished. Add to that the fact that you'll still have to actually relenquish your Xoom and send it in for the upgrade, and the whole thing was looking even sillier than it did at first blush.

But that brings us back to now. Starting Thursday, you can go to Verizon's website for complete instructions on how to get your upgrade. You'll have to part with your Xoom for six days. The upgrade is free, and you don't have to change your data plan.

Also of note: Motorola Xooms with 4G LTE baked in -- aptly named the Xoom 4G LTE -- will start shipping Oct. 13 for $499.

Full press release is after the break.

Yahoo releases official Flickr app for Android

14

Flickr, one of the most popular photo sharing websites, has finally come to Android. Yahoo held off releasing a native app for a while, frustrating many Android users who love Flickr. Good news for both sides as the app is now available for free from the Android Market, and it's pretty good.

With the release, you can take photos from an in-app camera function, filter the images as you see fit and then share them with the world to Flickr, Twitter and Facebook.

Here are the full features:

  • Share photos only with the people you want to with easy privacy settings.
  • Full screen browsing and slideshows for your photos, your contacts photos or any of the public photos from the global Flickr community.
  • Share the story behind your photo with titles, descriptions, comments and tags.
  • Keep your track of where you took your photo by keeping your location data automatically through geotagging.

To get Flickr for your Android device, hit up the links after the break. Heavy and casual Flickr users, we'd love to hear your thoughts. Speak out in the Android App Forum.

US Cellular adds the HTC Wildfire S, Hero S and Flyer to its lineup

5

US Cellular just droppeed word that it's adding a trio of HTC devices to its lineup -- devices that we outed back in July along with the rest of USCC's roadmap. Here's what's on tap:

  • HTC Hero S -- It's got a 4-inch Super LCD display at qHD resolution, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, Android 2.3, and HTC Sense. It'll cost $199.99 after a $100 rebate and contract.
  • HTC Wildfire S -- Stepping down just a tad, this one's got Android 2.3, a 3.2-inch display, a 5MP rear camera and will be available in grey or purple. It'll cost $79.99 after rebate and contract.
  • HTC Flyer -- The 7-inch tablet has been a favorite of many this year, with its 1.5GHz processor, 32GB of storage and the HTC Scribe stylus. It'll cost $199.99 after $100 rebate and two-year contract.

One thing we don't have are release dates, so stay tuned. Full presser's after the break.

CyanogenMod support coming to Sony Ericsson Xperia devices

4

The CyanogenMod and FreeXperia development teams have announced that they'll be bringing popular custom firmware CyanogenMod to all of Sony Ericsson's 2011 Xperia phones, along with many older X8 and X10 devices.

The developers promise full support -- with the exception of FM radio, which is still being worked on -- starting with the next release of CyanogenMod, version 7.1. Nightly builds are expected to start rolling out soon, so keep watching the CyanogenMod download site if you fancy testing some early builds on your Xperia phone.

In a blog post on the CyanogenMod site, the team praised Sony Ericsson for its "strong involvement with the developer community", and thanked the manufacturer for providing "devices and technical expertise that proved invaluable in making all this happen".

This is great news for custom ROM enthusiasts with Xperia devices, and even better news for legacy Xperia phone owners, most of whom are left without an official upgrade path to Gingerbread. Hit the source link for the full list of CM-supported Xperia phones.

Amazon explains the Silk browser on the Kindle Fire

17

Youtube link for mobile viewing

What do you get when you take a traditional web browser, crunch it through some cloud servers, compress the data and make it more mobile friendly by sharing the load locally as well as in the back end? That's Amazon's Silk browser. Actually, it sounds a bit familiar, but it's going to get some prominent play on the new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, which is likely to be a hot seller when it launches Nov. 15 for $199. Check out the video above for how it all works.

Ask AC: How can I pre-order an Amazon Kindle Fire?

11

Check out our Amazon Kindle Fire Forums!

Amazon's now accepting preorders for the Kindle Fire Android tablet. (Yes, we're going to call this guy a tablet and not a mere e-reader from here on out.)

For now, it's $199. That's no contract (as it doesn't have cell radios), and remember that these are preorders. The Amazon Fire will ship starting Nov. 15.
