Age of Defenders - A unique multiplayer cross-platform tower defense game

12

If you're into tower defense games then you'll want to get your hands on Age of Defenders from Cuketa. Having now gone official on the Android Market, Age of Defenders allows for multiplayer cross-platform action meaning, through the help of P2P and realtime sockets you can go head-to-head with iOS, Mac, PC and of course -- other Android players.

Given how the game is set up, phone users won't be able to get in on this action. However, tablet users -- game on. Age of Defenders will only set you back a few bucks in the Android Market and looks to be well worth it. Check out the trailer above, you'll find the download link past the break.

Duke Nukem ditches the ads after initial complaints

29

Good news for those of you who paid your 99 cents for Duke Nukem 3D (check out our review) only to be greeted with a few ads in the game menu -- they're gone. Finished. Kaput.

It's an interesting argument -- should an app that you paid for (albeit less than a dollar) have ads as well? Or should it at least warn you up front? (That seems a bit much.) Maybe it's double-dipping. Maybe we're just used to seeing ads. (Lord knows we have enough around here.) Regardless, Duke's killed 'em. Huzzah.

Thanks, @imjustjoshinyou

Cellcom of Wisconsin updates its Samsung Galaxy S Showcase to Gingerbread

15

Rocking a Samsung Galaxy S Showcase on Cellcom of Wisconsin? (We know you're out there.) You've got a Gingerbread update waiting for you. The Android 2.3.5 changelog reads as follows:

  • Improved Battery Life: This update more efficiently manages the way your device uses resources while you enjoy your favorite apps, increasing battery life.
  • Downloads Management: A new downloads application provides easy access to view, re-open, delete, and manage files downloaded in browser, Gmail, or email.
  • Google eBooks: Read and enjoy books through the Google eBooks website. There's over 3 million books to choose from.
  • Improvements in Performance for: missed calls, screen freezing and black screen.

And Cellcom's doing something we've not seen before (though it's not terribly surprising given it's a smaller regional) -- phone support should you have issues updating. Very cool.

My Fishing Companion for Android

3

Like to fish? Love your Android phone?  Me, too.  I recently checked out My Fishing Companion and came away really pleased.  It tackles (pardon the pun) the problem apps designed for fishermen seem to all have in common -- nobody wants to enter info on a touchscreen phone while out fishing -- by allowing you to set everything up beforehand, and having a one-click solution for things like location and weather data.  Combined with a feature rich interface, and easy to manage lists and database for your catches, your gear, your places, and multimedia, it's one of the best outdoorsman's apps I've run across.

The full version of the app is $1.99, (Android 1.6 and higher) and it's well worth it.  But the free (lite) version has most of the functionality, and is a great way to check it out yourself.  We have the download links after the break, along with a video walkthrough and a handful of screenshots.

Gingerbread for original Verizon Galaxy Tab rolling out

13

We just told you guys the other day that Verizon was ready to push out Gingerbread to the OG 7-inch Galaxy Tab, and it looks like they have flipped the switch -- OTA's are now rolling out.  With all the new and shiny Android tablets getting built, it's nice to see the 7-incher wasn't forgotten by Big Red.  A refresher:

The update is to Android 2.3.5 and will bring:

  • Improved security for the PIN method. When using the PIN, the device will no longer request a symbol as a numeric entry
  • Improved word selection and copy functionality
  • A 'View Data Plan' icon so that users can adjust their plans accordingly
  • Verizon Data Service feature will allow users to see how much data they have used so that they won't go over
  • A new download manager app
  • The ability to use the front-facing camera as a camcorder
  • Widgets will resize to reflect landscape and portrait mode more accurately
  • Support for Verizon Pay As You Go prepaid plans
  • Google security patches

If you've resisted the urge to root your Tab, be ready for the OTA notification any time now.  Be sure to sing out in the forums once you get it and let everyone know how it's working for ya!

LG, on Facebook, says Optimus 2X getting Ice Cream Sandwich, other phones to be decided later

16

Because PR messages too often are, well, borked on Facebook, we instead point you to the most recent statement from LG on, erm, Facebook, regarding Ice Cream Sandwich updates and the fact that the Optimus 2X will indeed be updated to Android 4.0. It reads thusly:

LG firmly denies the rumors that claim LG will not be providing the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS update for the LG Optimus 2X. These rumors are NOT true. LG is currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X as well as other LG high-end smartphones. Detailed information on the ICS OS update schedule for specific models will be announced, once the ICS OS is publicly released by Google. Please stay tuned for more updates from LG.

Thank you very much.

To repeat: We're still just two weeks out of the ICS announcement, and the ICS code has not yet been made available (publicly, anyway). Let's all exercise a little caution when we see someone supposedly saying a phone will or won't be getting an update. Unless you're reading LG, of course.

Logitech unveils the Mini Boombox: Rocking and talking via Bluetooth for $99

10

Logitech has announced a new little Bluetooth speaker that in addition to handling music and media playback also serves as a speakerphone for honest-to-goodness phone calls. Logitech's specs only mention the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch as being supported, but we're willing to bet our lowly Android smartphones will work as well.

The Mini Boombox has an internal battery (recharable via miniUSB) that claims to have up to 10 hours' playback time. It's got backlit controls via a touch panel on top of the speaker, an on-off switch, line in, and the whole thing is small enough to be palmed one-handed.

It's available for preorder for $99 and is expected to ship sometime this month.
