Fling a new birdie in Angry Birds Rio

11

Calling all Angry Birds players!  If you've "3 starred" all the levels in Angry Birds Rio, you have some more work to do.  Amazon has released an update via their Appstore for Android bringing the current version to 1.2.0.  Well what's new in this update?

  • A whole new episode! It's time to Samba!
  • 15 all-new levels
  • New bird type

So start flinging those birds, especially the new one, and finish up those newly introduced levels. This update seems to be pushing out gradually so be patient if you haven't got it yet.  I've not received it yet so you can be sure I'm refreshing the Appstore every few minutes!  Shout out in the comments if you're liking the new update.

Virgin Mobile will keep its Android phones pure by omitting manufacturer skins

22

If you’ll recall, we reported yesterday that the Motorola Triumph, that surprise little powerhouse headed to Virgin Mobile this summer, will be Blur-less. That’s right: Vanilla Froyo on a prepaid carrier. We’re officially excited. Today, a Virgin Mobile spokesperson explained the decision to PCMag, citing the company’s commitment to the user experience, and ultimately customization. In short, Virgin Mobile's policy is to retain “the true Android experience” on all of its Android offerings. No word yet on whether or not that translates to other goodies like unlocked bootloaders, and whether or not manufacturers will play ball, but it’s certainly refreshing to see a carrier as big a fan of Android as we are.

Samsung Galaxy S sees Android 2.3.4 leaked build

11

Android 2.3.4 has been leaked for the Samsung Galaxy S (that would be the i9000 international version), and the folks at SAMFirmware have made it publicly available.  Early reports are saying that it does address some of the bugs found in the 2.3.3 version, but the all important video chat via Google Talk is not included in this build.  We're not going to read too much into that, this is a leak and nothing official after all.

The real question is how long will this take to move from leaked status, to something that can be deployed across all carriers, for all Galaxy S variants.  We don't have that answer -- I don't think anyone does.  Hopefully it's sooner rather than later.

Friday freebie: HTC ThunderBolt Seidio 3200mAh extended battery

The mother of all extended batteries for the HTC ThunderBolt just dropped into the Android Central store -- and being the benevolent bloggers that we be, we're going to give one away right here, right now. This massive 3200mAh extended battery from Seidio has more than double the juice of the stock battery, and it comes with an extended battery cover with soft-touch coating. And, best of all, it fits the new extended battery cases as well.

So. Wanna win one? Just leave a comment on this post, and we'll pick a winner at 5 p.m. EST. You'll need to be in the United States, and have a ThunderBolt, of course. Good luck!

Update: And the winner (chosen at random) is ... LethalDonkey!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 commercial hits the net

17

It looks like Samsung's finally rolled out its first commercial for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and while it's not quite in the same vein as its phone offerings, it's still a fun watch -- and takes a swipe or two at the iPad 2.

I think we can all agree it's not quite that easy to convince someone to go and spend hundreds of dollars on a tablet, but nice try in making it look that way. Also, the Flash bit has definitely been a point of contention for a while now, but did it need airtime?

At any rate, I think Sammy's got a good ball rolling now, especially with that slogan. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to Tab.

Android Quick App: PlayerPro

13

PlayerPro is one of those great music apps that does a lot of the tedious and menial things involving your music for you. For example, it automatically finds album art, but in addition, also has images for genre and artist as well. The album art thing should definitely come standard, but the other enhancements really help round out the package.

PlayerPro also supports a number of skins (all free on the Market) that you can use to customize the look of your player to your own tastes. All the included screenshots are using the stock skin that comes when you install, but chances are you can find something more your style if stock doesn't do it for you.

Probably PlayerPro's strongest asset is it's equalizer. You can pick from a number of sound effects as well as adjust individual levels, the volume, and the bass. I can speak from personal experience that the bass dialer works well, as evidenced by my booming car when I started playing music for the first time.

It's a bit pricey at $4.99 for the full app, but there is a trial in the Market that lasts five days. If you're looking for another solid music player and have a few bucks to burn, PlayerPro might be the way to go.

More pictures, QR code, and download links are after the break.

Sprint HTC EVO 3D and Motorola Photon 4G: specs comparison

88

HTC is bringing the EVO 3D soon.  Motorola just showed us the Photon 4G.  It's a great time to be a Sprint customer, isn't it?  With two awesome phones in the pipeline, there probably isn't a bad choice between them.  4G, 3D, GSM, SMR -- heck, even the acronyms sound very cool.  But most of us will have to make a choice, and that's where we come in.  We've put it all together in one easy to read place so you can compare and discuss.

Hit the break, check it out, and start filling the forums with questions and chatter.  We all have a tough choice to make now.
