Review: Golla Gavin Phone Wallet

13

 Golla Gavin Smartphone Wallet

The Golla Gavin Phone Wallet for your Sprint Evo 4G lets you carry your phone and other essentials with you conveniently in style at your hip right where you need it. For a phone as beautiful as the Evo, I hate to put a case on it, so keeping it protected safely in a pouch is perfect for me. As an added benefit, a phone as large as the Evo completely takes over any pocket you put it in, so this gives you a pocket back as well as adding a few storage slots for the other things you need with you at all times. Hit the break for the full review.

HTC Desire review (U.S. Cellular version)

18

HTC Desire on U.S. Cellular

It took half a year, but, finally, the HTC Desire has come to America. Announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2010, the Desire -- codenamed the Bravo -- brought an all-new interface -- Sense -- to Android 2.1, all tucked into a phone that essentially is the Nexus One, with a few tweaks.

Come Aug. 27, the HTC Desire will be available on U.S. Cellular, with its 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Sense UI -- and the new SLCD touchscreen, which replaces the AMOLED screen that's seen shortages of late. Is it worth the wait? Find out, after the break.

Developer: Android is a viable revenue stream, posts numbers to prove it

15

Advanced Task Manager

Aaron La, the developer behind Advanced Task Manager, has opened his books and gives us some interesting insight into the Android Market, profitability and his own opinions of the market. We'll let Aaron break down the numbers for you, but some interesting points:

  • The free version of ATM can bring in as much or more advertising revenue monthly than straight sales of its 99-cent counterpart.
  • Aaron hasn't quit his day job, but an average of $10,000 a month is quite a lot of pocket change.
  • Google Checkout and the Market app themselves are a couple of big anchors holding back Android. (And that's a sentiment certainly echoed by a whole lot of people).
  • The 24-hour return policy isn't evil.

Give the entire blog post a read. It's a good one. [Aaronla.com via @romainguy]

Samsung Galaxy Tab supposedly spotted in the wild

3

Samsung Galaxy TabSomewhere in a crowded Sydney, Australia, train station, a man uses a handheld device. But not just any device. It's a tablet. And it's not just any tablet.

It is, according to Electronista, the fabled Samsung Galaxy Tab -- the Korean smartphone manufacturer's rumored Android tablet that we're expecting to see announced in the next month or so, possibly at the IFA conference in Berlin.

It's not the first time we've seen supposed sightings of the seven-inch tablet -- it's leaked out of a Korean office before -- but this is the first time we've seen it on video. It's obviously smaller than Apple's 10-inch iPad, and even in its spy-cam shots, it looks sleeker than the Dell Streak. And the ability to one-hand the thing is going to make that size of tablet more attractive to some.

Anyhoo, enough chatter. Check out the video after the break. [Electronista]

Android Quick App: Zune Home launcher

22

Zune Home launcher replacement for Android

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued by what Windows Phone 7 will be bringing to the proverbial smartphone table in a few short months. And so when we ran across the Zune Home launcher replacement [via FrAndroid], I had to give it a shot. It's a 99-cent launcher replacement that roughly mimics the UI of the Zune and (even more roughly) Windows Phone 7. It's definitely not the same experience, though it has potential. Check out the video and download links after the break.

Notion Ink Adam pricing and release news

12

Notion Ink's Adam

We've been talking about the Notion Ink Adam for a good while now, and finally we have some news about pricing and release dates.  In case you haven't been keeping tabs on this one, the Adam is a Tegra 2 packing 10.1 inch slate, with all the goodies you'd expect from an Android device, plus a SIM card slot and standard USB ports.  Now that we're on the same page -- the pricing breakdown:

  • LCD version -- WiFi only $399, 3G version $449
  • Pixel QI version -- WiFi only $449, 3G version $498

Release info -- Notion is set to begin manufacture and submit to the FCC in early November 2010.  The final date will depend on the FCC.  If the device can clear sooner rather than later, expect a release before the end of the year.  If the FCC doesn't get things clear until January, Notion will release the device at CES 2011.  I know it's been a long time coming, and we still have no exact dates, but just look at the thing.  You can't rush perfection. [Notion Ink via Slashgear] Thanks Daryl!

HTC Legend hits end of life on Bell

4

HTC Legend

What the what? The HTC Legend came to Bell Mobility on June 16, and now, just over two months later, the device has reached its end of life. Even relative to its unveiling date at Mobile World Congress on Feb. 16, that was quick. We're used to fast product refresh cycles on smartphones in general and Android phones in particular. New iterations of smartphone hardware and the Android OS are still coming almost too fast for manufacturers to keep up, but this still pushes the limit.

HTC has cited "supply constraints" as the reason for the premature EOL rather than "quality of the product or poor sales performance." These supply constraints may be another instance of AMOLED shortages, which have been an issue in the production of other HTC phones like the Desire and, of course, the Incredible.

This isn't the end of the Legend in North America; it's still available on Virgin Mobile Canada. Let's hope that Bell still feels an obligation to support this far-from-obsolete device for a long time to come.

Samsung Vibrant, Captivate SIM unlock codes are hidden on the phones

23

Samsung Vibrant and Captivate

In the realm of GSM smartphones, there's a phenomenon known as "SIM unlocked," which is the ability to use any SIM card in a phone, meaning you can easily swap from carrier to carrier. And it's pretty rare in the United States. If you buy a myTouch 3G, it's locked to T-Mobile. Same goes for the Motorola Backflip on AT&T. They're both GSM phones and share radio frequencies, but they're locked to the carriers. (The Nexus One is one of the few SIM unlocked phones available -- erm, once available -- in the U.S.)

In order to use one GSM phone on another's carrier, you'll need an unlock code. And obtaining that code (or cracking it) really isn't new. Been doing it for years on the Windows Mobile side of things, and there are websites that will unlock your phone for a small fee. (Or, if you're in good standing with your carrier, it may give you the unlock code.)

Now let's turn to the AT&T Captivate and the T-Mobile Vibrant. Both Samsung Galaxy S-class phones are of the GSM variety and share radio frequencies. And it turns out that the unlock codes are stored on the phones themselves in a hex file, and the fine folks at XDA Developers -- mad props to dagentooboy, rbnet.it, marcopon, Bowsa2511, RazvanG, chcp0112345 and galaxysguy -- have made it dirt simple to extract your phone's code and SIM unlock the beast. And even better is that you can relock them for warranty reasons if need be.

We've done both of our phones, and they worked just fine (though we're only getting EDGE on the Vibrant, for some reason). It's a pretty big step in the name of openness, since buying unlocked phones (which also would mean unsubsidized -- read: more expensive) is pretty much non-existent in the states.

Hit up the XDA Developers link for all the details, read the instructions, and get to unlocking! [XDA Developers via Engadget]

Motorola Droid 2 gets minor OTA update

5

droid2update

If you own a Motorola Droid 2, you may already have been prompted to install this OTA update, but that doesn't mean you don't want to know what it fixed. This minor update (version 2.2.20.en.US, for those playing at home) that Verizon is pushing out is not a complete update, but more so a fix for some of the issues that were reported at the release of the device.

Improvements:

  • Enabled text and picture message scrolling.
  • Streamlined set up of Visual Voice Mail feature.
  • Improved contact sync with Corporate Exchange categories
  • and groups.
  • View accurate contact pictures when reviewing Recent Call Log.

If you have not received your OTA update for your device, head to settings, scroll down to about phone, click on system updates and then download. This will be the same as awaiting the OTA, just, well, without the wait! [Verizon Wireless via Droid-Life]
