Verizon Wireless's Q1 2014 results see $21 billion in revenue and 539,000 postpaid subscribers

Verizon's first quarter results are in, and mirroring rival AT&T, they saw some rather impressive growth. Verizon as a whole saw $30 billion in revenue, but even with their substantial non-cellular businesses, Verizon Wireless accounted for a whopping $20.9 billion of that income. That's an increase of nearly 7% from this quarter last year, though growth through their retail outlets was slightly lower.

Sega has just announced that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is now available for free on Google Play. What's more is both new and veteran racers can look to expect more content added to the intense title next week. Wreck-It Ralph and Metal sonic will join the collection of unlockable characters on April 29th.

Samsung and Swarovski to launch blinged-out Galaxy S5

Samsung's latest partnership with Swarovski will bring to market a "crystal collection" edition of its flagship phone, the Galaxy S5. A teaser posted on YouTube by Samsung Mobile Korea reveals that the blingtastic handset, the back of which is smothered in Swarovski crystals, will arrive in May in Samsung's home market.

It's unclear whether the "crystal collection" GS5 will see wide availability internationally, however the limited edition crystal-backed Galaxy Note 3 did make its debut in New York a couple of months back, so there's hope yet for fans of sparkly things.

Samsung announces Gear App Challenge

With the Tizen-powered Samsung Gear 2 now on the market, Samsung is looking to boost the smartwatch's app ecosystem with a new "app challenge" for developers. From May 8, Gear 2 app developers can register their creations on Samsung Apps to participate in the challenge. The prize pool totals $1.25 million, including a $100,000 grand prize for first place.

Japan Display ships first samples of 4K, 10.1-inch tablet LCDs

While smartphone screen sizes appear to be closing the gap between the mobile phone and tablet, larger handheld devices are further advancing screen technology and Japan Display is looking to add 4K to the mix. The company has announced a new 10.1-inch IPS LCD display with a "4K2K" resolution (3840 x 2160). This would provide a super high-definition experience for tablet owners with a pixel density of 438ppi, comparable to premium smartphones.

But it seems Samsung's not done with this quirky smartphone design just yet, as a successor has today appeared on its Chinese site with support for the China Mobile network.

Canadian HTC One M8 updated with Extreme Power Saving and camera tweaks

Following similar updates by some of the U.S. carriers, the first software upgrade for the HTC One M8 has started to arrive in Canada. We're seeing an update to version 1.55.631.4 on our Rogers M8, which adds the new power-saving feature alongside "camera and gallery feature enhancements."
