Droid 2 Global gets root and bootstrapping

4

Some lucky folks out there have managed to already receive their shipments for the Droid 2 Global and with that, some have even taken the time to put it to the test to see if it can be rooted and bootstrapped. Which, appears to be possible using the regular Droid 2 methods. But of course, we do have to advise that you exercise caution if you choose to give it a run through. With that disclaimer out of the way, anyone get their Droid 2 Global? If so, let us know in the forums. We'd love to see some sexy pics and unboxings. [DroidLife]

Best Buy to feature Nexus S materials as soon as Nov. 14 [rumor]

16

When it rains, it often pours -- Nexus S (or Nexus Elite, or Nexus 2; pick your poison at this point) rumors are no different.  The fellows at Android Police have got their hands on an internal screen from Best Buy, showing that promotional materials, and possibly some sort of dummy unit, are scheduled to be set up by Nov. 14.  We checked with our Best Buy source, and while they can't confirm, they say it certainly looks to be in order.  Maybe those "mistakes" at the Best Buy website weren't off the mark after all?

Who else will be trucking out to Best Buy come Sunday? [Android Police]

If you don't want to get your hopes up based on a Best Buy snafu, these should certainly give you some hope.  Hit the source link to see the complete set. [Engadget]

Sprint Epic 4G Froyo leak made available to all

21

Last weekend when the Froyo leak for the Epic 4G rolled out, there was a bit of consternation about the folks that had the leak not wanting to share it with the public-at-large.  Somebody, somewhere decided that this needed changing, and the leak is now available for download and flashing.  You'll need to be rooted of course, and bug reports vary wildly, from no issues to plenty of force closes and reboots.

If you're that kind of guy (or gal), grab the file at the source and give it a go! [XDA-Developers] Thanks Casey!

Rhapsody for Android 2.0 available now

7

A lot of folks have signed up for the Rhapsody beta test, and now version 2.0 is available for all in the Android Market. Rhapsody has been trying to work out any kinks within the app itself and thus far has done a pretty good job. A few new features are included with this build:

  • Download and offline playback of your playlists!
  • Download playlists and manage your downloads through the My Playlists menu.
  • New toolbar with download and other options on the playlist screen.
  • Offline mode displaying unique UI and available menu items.
  • Settings: Clear Pending Downloads from the My Playlists menu; Force Offline Mode or Remove All Downloads from the Settings screen.
  • A completely refreshed user interface.
  • Artist Radio available right from the Artist screen, and a new "Search Artist Stations" option.
  • High-resolution album art (when available for specific releases).

Despite all the new additions and bug fixes added to the latest release, a few known issues do still exist so keep that in mind when deciding to use it. You can read the full change log and known issues via the Rhapsody website. If you want to give it try, the download link can certainly be found after the break. [Rhapsody]

This the Samsung Elite/Nexus S/Nexus 2?

17

Before we all go too crazy over this Best Buy Mobile in-store "gift-shopper's smorgasbord" image, which shows a Samsung-esque phone that looks like it could match the oft-rumored by never-confirmed (and possibly misnamed) Nexus S or Nexus 2, remember this: Best Buy has also showed the HTC Aria towering over the Evo 4G, and with 4G data, no less.

It's also interesting that the home button is all the way to the right. Has that been done on any other phone? And maybe the green-colored icons at the bottom and top are Gingerbread. Or maybe it's another bad Photoshop job. We know. We're Debbie Downers like that. [Best Buy Mobile via Engadget]

Gingerbread coming today? It's still pinging

30

The big ol' unsourced, unconfirmed, who-knows-if-it's-true rumor of the past week or so has been that Android  2.3 -- Gingerbread -- will be announced/released/something today. It's just about lunchtime, and no sign of anything sweet yet -- though as you can see from the Google analytics above, it looks like it's still pinging around out there.

Will we see it today? Dunno. Will we see it tomorrow? Dunno. Are our fingers crossed? Absofrigginlutely.

Leaked: Android 2.2.1 for the Motorola Droid (FRG83), and rooted, no less

7

For all of you who are still holding strong to your Motorola Droid the folks at MyDroidWorld have been kind enough to leak an update for you. This update, which is build FRG83, brings things up to Android 2.2.1 -- just like on the Nexus One. This update has already been rooted for your pleasure and you can chose between an odexed or deodexed version of the update. While sadly an exact changelog has not been released, it seems as though the users have good reports and no major issues. So, if you got a Droid, download the leaked update for yourself! The device runs Android 2.1 with a 1080p HDMI output, a built in camera, and is available with a 7 inch display. Check the video out after the jump for a rather funny unboxing of the unit and some more information. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Best Buy tips the 'Nexus S' on T-Mobile? Maybe, or maybe not

20

Hmmmmmmm. So Best Buy apparently had up some sort of preorder slot for the Nexus S, a "Pure Google" phone "Only available at Best Buy this holiday season." And the image placeholder points to T-Mobile, eh? So maybe Best Buy knows something the rest of us have been speculating about and will have an exclusive period.

Or -- and you'll have to forgive our cynicism here -- maybe it's just some SEO trickery at work. Wouldn't be the first time we've seen an online store list an unreleased (and occasionally unannounced) phone just to get a leg up on everybody else. Regardless, the link's down now. Oh, and about that "Nexus S" name -- we're hearing otherwise. [Best Buy via Phandroid]
