Samsung Fascinate MR update released

45

Verizon has released the scheduled maintenance release update for the Samsung Fascinate, and it's not Froyo.  Prepare your rotten tomatoes and pitchforks, because yes, I did say it could be Froyo a few days back when we got tipped about the update.  Unfortunately, it's just the DL09 update that many said wouldn't pass Verizon's quality control.  Looks like it did :)

The good news is that it supposedly fixes the GPS (though many say differently) and offers a slew of other bug fixes and enhancements, and updates all those apps everyone wants to uninstall.  For more info and instructions, hit the source link. [Verizon via Android Central forumsThanks everyone who sent this in!

Want to discuss the good and bad about the update?  Check out the Fascinate forums while I slink off and hide my head in shame.

Samsung SCH-R910 -- MetroPCS' first Android LTE phone?

16

A tipster has has provided the above image to BGR, showing the Samsung SCH-R910 -- a Samsung LTE enabled Android phone, with MetroPCS branding.  While we have to file it under the "rumor" category for now, the image pretty much says it all.

According to BGR's source, the Hummingbird CPU is on board, as well as a five MP camera and removable SD card, and MetroPCS subscribers should find it for sale sometime soon.  MetroPCS was first in the states to offer LTE devices, are they trying to be first with an Android LTE phone as well? EVO Shift 4G issues, Bionic RAM and is the Inspire uninspiring? [from the forums]

0

Now that CES has come to a close we're looking forward to all the new devices set to be released. Although it's always fun to see what pops up in the meantime while we wait. Was there something you expected at CES but didn't get to see? If so let us know in the forums. Mobile World Congress isn't that far away, so maybe some goodies will be shown off there. Unless of course you're a Sprint user in which case CTIA is where you will shine.

Watch Motorola Mobility's CES announcements (video)

3

Miss Motorola's announcements at CES? Want to watch the entire event that introduced the Atrix 4G, Cliq 2, Droid Bionic and Xoom? The video is now available and is about 35 minutes long. Motorola's event was arguably the most exciting from an Android point of view so this would be a good one to see. Sit back and enjoy all of the Android goodness that's going to hit the market soon.

Oh, and don't blame us for the video quality. Phil says it looked pretty damn cool in person, though. And if you look closely, you might even be able to spot him in the crowd.

For more on these new phones, check out our Motorola Forums

MeeGo and Ubuntu ported to the Samsung Nexus S

4

We've seen this happen in the past on many devices, but this is a first for the Samsung Nexus S. Yes, the beautiful Samsung Nexus S that runs Gingerbread out of the box has now been persuaded to run MeeGo and Ubuntu. If you're going to be trying this out, it's only fair to warn you it's not something for a new user as it could potentially kill off your device and make it a paperweight. You can grab the full details from the source link if you simply must know how it can be done. You'll also find a quick video after the break. Thanks Liam! [High Caffeine via Redmond Pie]

Google confirms Nexus S reboot bug

18

Are you a Samsung Nexus S owner who has been experiencing random reboots during calls? If so, you'll be pleased to know that Google has now been able to replicate the issue and is working with Samsung to address it. Although reported a while back, this bug has a history of being noted and then quickly being declined based on the fact Google never felt it was an issue with Gingerbread but rather a manufacturer related issue.

We're guessing the attention given to the SMS bug lately has caused Google to start looking at the communities bug tracking efforts just a little bit harder. At this time, no fix has been issued but hopefully we can expect one very soon now that the reboot issue has been acknowledged. Thanks Andrew! [Google via XDA]

Google Goggles gets faster, does Sudoku

27

Google Goggles is pretty damn cool, being able to nearly instantly recognize just about anything you can take a picture of. And in Version 1.3, it's gotten faster -- and smarter.

First off, scanning barcodes is much faster. Takes about a second now. Then there's the print ad feature -- scan the ad and it'll find search results about the product. And what's really cool is that you can scan a Sudoku puzzle and have the puzzle solved for your lazy butt get a little help. It's pretty damn cool. Video of it in action and download links are after the break. [Google]

Froyo update for MyTouch 3G Slide delayed

6

T-Mobile-centric news site TmoNews has gotten word from someone on the inside that a pair of issues have been discovered in the Froyo update package for the MyTouch 3G Slide. The first seems to be a glitch in the WiFi calling feature that prevents it from working correctly. The second is much more serious as the update file is being directed towards a partition on the phone that is not large enough to hold it. Their source also claims that HTC is aware of the issues and is already working on getting them ironed out so hopefully the wait won't be too long until the update is ready for general release. Xoom to have built in barometer -- now let's talk about the weather

24

The new Xoom tablet sure does love the news. According to Motorola's MotoDev page for the Xoom shows that it is fully equipped with an internal Barometer sensor, and Motorola confirmed this on their Facebook page. This will enable the Xoom to provide more accurate predictions and reports of your current weather conditions, and will also be able to detect current altitude -- a great feature for you hikers out there. What else did we not see at CES that the Xoom can do? You can bet we'll be digging to find out! [Motorola via Phone Arena]
