The ultimate guide to Google Now cards

36
Google Now cards hero image

Google Now cards can offer a lot of information at a glance. This is how to make them work for you.

Google Now is much more than a Siri- or Cortana-like virtual assistant. It has cards that can let you receive a lot of information and process it quickly. They show up when they're needed, and they have very practical uses.

For example, I'm a very forgetful person. With that being the case, there are some cards that are very useful. I can receive reminders to call Mom back in a couple hours after studying for exams or finishing papers that are due soon (sorry, Mom). I also like the fact that I can set reminders to give my roommate cash for my portion of the Internet bill when I get back to my apartment. It can give me a rough estimate of where I parked my car, which is useful because I can spend a good chunk of time searching for it if left to my own devices.

Anyway, Google Now cards are neat and nifty. A lot of what information shows up depends on what information you give Google, which will admittedly cause some people to hesitate using the services, but please read on before deciding whether or not to use the service. Displayed information will also depend on settings enabled on your phone and even your location.

You can also see some cards when you're using the Chrome browser, but we'll be talking mostly about cards on Android devices here. Here we go!

HomeTube gives you a kid-friendly launcher/app for YouTube videos

5
HomeTube

From the mind of Chris Lacy, one of our favorite Aussie developers and the brains behind ActionLauncher, LinkBubble and others, comes HomeTube, a devilishly simple app that gives you a quick and easy way to babysit your kids with your Android devices.

HomeTube's sole purpose is to serve up kid-friendly YouTube videos in one place. It's technically a launcher, so you can fire it up, set it as the default on a secondary profile on a tablet and not worry too much about little Timmy getting into too much trouble. (Getting into the settings isn't all that difficult or hidden, though, so you'll want to keep a little supervision, probably.) Or you can just use it as a traditional app if you don't want to muck about with app defaults and what not.

Pony up a 99-cent in-app purchase and you can pick and choose from a bunch of categories — Curious George, Dora, cars, Peppa Pig, Spider-Man, to name a few. For parents of kids who live with their faces buried in YouTube, this is a no-brainer.

First look at the Toshiba Chromebook 2

Toshiba Chromebook 2

Toshiba added a 1080p IPS display to its latest Chromebook, and it's pretty glorious

IFA 2014 Right at the beginning of the IFA 2014 week, Toshiba pulled the wraps off its new Chromebook 2. Coming in two versions, it's the higher spec, Full HD 1080p Chromebook 2 we've taken a quick first look at here on the show floor. The displays used on Chromebooks to date – not counting the likes of the Chromebook Pixel – has been one of our bigger criticisms across many of the models we've seen. But not this one. The 1080p IPS display is simply glorious to look at.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha and an iPhone 5s: metal, chamfers, and dimples

20

Say what you will about Samsung, but they're certainly rarely timid, even when brazenly borrowing styling cues from their competitors. While Samsung has certainly set their own design course as of late, they've been mixing things up a bit more recently. We're out at IFA 2014 where Samsung's unveiled their second metal-framed phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. But a few weeks before that saw the unveiling of the smaller and first metal phone in many years from Samsung: the Galaxy Alpha.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha versus Galaxy S5: Quick comparison

30
Galaxy Alpha + Galaxy S5

Plastic versus metal, see how the Alpha stacks up side by side with the Galaxy S5

IFA 2014 Samsung's other latest device, the Galaxy Alpha, is doing the rounds publicly at IFA 2014 and as such we've snagged ourselves a quick look. More specifically we've sized up the 4.7-inch, metal framed Galaxy against it's older, bigger brother, the Galaxy S5. We know the Alpha is smaller and has a lower resolution display.
