Quadriplegic sets world record with Swype

18

YouTube link for mobile viewing

We know the Swype keyboard is pretty awesome. But try this on for size: Hank Torres, who is paralyzed from the shoulders down, set a world record with Swype and a head tracking device at the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference in Orlando. The sentence he cranked out in 83.09 seconds?

“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”

Pretty damned impressive, that's for sure. Be sure to watch the video above, and the full presser's after the break.

HTC Inspire 4G interactive demo found online

6

If you're in the mood to mess around with an online demo of a device you just simply cannot, as of yet have then you're in luck. The HTC Inspire 4G is coming to AT&T at some point in time but Radio Shack has been busy getting its affairs in order readying for the launch. The interactive demo is now online for folks to mess play around with and learn more about the device. Although I'm sure Radio Shack would have preferred to keep it under wraps a little longer. But hey they're not exactly known for keeping secrets very well as history dictates.

Go ahead play around with the demo. Just remember, drool is bad for your keyboard. If online demos are not your thing, have a look at our very own hands on with the HTC Inspire 4G. [PocketNow via Phandroid]

Screen shots reportedly show official Gingerbread build on the Droid X

45

We've got no doubt that Verizon and Motorola are working on bringing Gingerbread to the Droid X. We said as much in our predictions of which phones will get Android 2.3 upgrades. And so it's little surprise that we're starting to see (reportedly) official builds leak out. And for all intents and purposes, it looks like how we'd expect Gingerbread to look on the DX. Real question, of course, is when we might actually see an update drop. Check out the full annoying animated GIF after the break, if you dare. [My Droid World via Android Central Forums]

Motorola Xoom Superbowl ad teaser takes a shot at Apple

32

YouTube link for mobile viewing

The Super Bowl is right around the corner and we're all anxious to see what products are advertised during the game since they reach so many viewers.

We have our first teaser by Motorola for the highly anticipated Xoom tablet. The ad takes place in space with a quick reference to Apple's 1984 ad before showing off the Xoom's qualities.

After the reference to 1984, the ad shows off 1080p playback, 3G and 4G models, dual cameras and Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Towards the end, Motorola appears to take a shot at Apple by saying "It's Time to Live a Free Life" after going through phrases such as "One Authority" and "One Design." It's a sweet commercial that makes us more anxious to see what's plugged during the Super Bowl.

Update: This is a teaser for the ad during the Superbowl, not the actual commercial. For the actual commercial, tune in to the game on Sunday.

LG G-Slate spotted on YouTube, Google branding visible [video]

6

The LG G-Slate was announced at CES 2011, but since then, LG and T-Mobile have been super tight-lipped about the tablet. One would think LG would want to start showing the device off, especially with all these Motorola Xoom rumors floating around. But instead, YouTube user MysteryGuitarM has uploaded a brief shot of what looks like the G-Slate. The back of the tablet carries two cameras and Google branding. Don't believe us? Watch the video after the break and jump to the 3:35 min mark to skip all the yapping. [YouTube via Engadget]

Nexus S 'coming to Vodafone Germany'

2

The Samsung Nexus S will be coming to Vodafone Germany. Sourcing a Vodafone preview site, German blog Mobiflip also confirms that the German Nexus S will retain the same Super AMOLED display found in North American and British versions of the phone. This was previously rumored by other German blogs, and contradicts earlier suggestions that Nexus S models launched in other territories may ship with Super Clear LCD displays instead.

Unfortunately no information on release dates for the Nexus S on Vodafone or any other German carrier is available. However, the Vodafone Germany preview site shows that a silver version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc will also be headed to the network at some point in the future. Can't stop, won't stop -- Android crushes Symbian numbers

22

Another analyst group is reporting new record numbers for Android today. Canalys has released showing Android in the fourth quarter of 2010 shipped 33.3 million devices worldwide. That's a HUGE difference from Q4 2009, in which Android shipped a mere 4.7 million units. The real crux of it all is that Symbian is starting to trail behind in numbers. Once the leader in smartphones around the globe, Symbian shipped 31 million units in Q4 2010. Granted, 31 million is still a very large number for Nokia, but when Google is showing this much growth from last year -- 615.1% to be exact. [Canalys via Engadget]

Motorola i1Q headed to Sprint Nextel?

11

If you're on Nextel and have a hankering for some a physical QWERTY keyboard, it looks like relief might one day be in sight. The Motorola i1q (a follow-up to the also-rugged Motorola i1 on Nextel) appears to be a fairly rugged device, with full physical buttons -- including menu, home, back and call/end. It's said to be rocking Android 2.1 on a slow processor -- no great surprise -- but "manufacturing is quite robust."

No word about when we may see this guy drop, but we could see a lot of you in the field rocking this guy. There's one more pic after the break. [via Grupoandroid] Thanks, Andres!

Dell Streak 7 coming Feb. 2 for $200 on contract, $450 off

16

T-Mobile has just announced that the Tegra 2-powered Dell Streak 7 will be launching on their network Feb. 2 with Android 2.2 Froyo. Pricing with a new two year contract will be just $199.99 (after $50 mail in rebate). Plus, according to Engadget, users looking to avoid a new monthly bill can pick up an unsubsidized model for $449.99. Considering the price for an unlocked Galaxy Tab is around $600, the Streak 7 could be a better option for those looking to jump into the tablet world without throwing down a ton of cash.
