Phil talks tablets, Nook Color hackery, on Denver's KWGN-TV

15

Our very own Phil Nickinson has been quite a busy man, pumping out news, heading down to CTIA to bring us all the coverage, talking tablets with our sister sites, and now hitting TV. As we all know, the Nook Color is a pretty amazing little e-reader turned tablet, and a local TV station out of Denver took to making it a known fact.

“They want to see what people can do with their products. They don't mind a little bit of hackery,” Phil said

Phil is joined by Tim Stevens of Engadget to talk about the Nook Color, and how it is the most affordable Android tablet on the market currently. Check out the video after the break, and hit up our Nook Color forums for all the instructions. [KWGN]

PlayStation emulator PSX4Droid pulled from the Android Market

27

Back when PSX4Droid was initially announced a lot of users were pleased to of have had a PlayStation emulator arrive on the scene. Here we are now, many months later and we're getting a Sony Ericsson built device with PlayStation gaming capabilities built right. I'm guessing at the time no one thought that would happen but indeed, it has.

Now, with Sony Ericsson Xperia Play arriving on the scene it appears as though some emulators are being removed from the Android Market with Google citing "Content Policy violation" as the reasoning and some folks wondering if Sony is really behind their removal. Google however, only offered a short statement on the matter:

"We remove apps from Android Market that violate our policies."

We're not ready to blame Sony for this, however, Zodttd, the developer behind PSX4Droid, has quickly asserted he is under that impression while others blame improper GPL License use as the reason. Be it suspicious timing, GPL license issues or just plain bad luck -- other emulators of the same nature still remain in the Android Market namely, FPSe. That begs the question what the deal was with PSX4Droid? [Twitter; via PocketGamer, Engadget, Mobiputing and JoyStiq]

Mobiado & Aston Martin partner to show what a high-end phone looks like

37

Have you ever wondered what an extremely high-end and rather revolutionary Android device would look like? Well, pretty much everything you could dream it to be was done by Mobiado when they constructed the CPT002 in conjunction with Aston Martin. The device, while still only a concept, has a sapphire crystal capacitive touchscreen that sits between two platinum bars. These platinum bars hold the processor, battery, SIM card slot and all the other goodies. The device will also act as a proximity fob, and will allow you to lock and unlock your car when you are close to the vehicle with the device. Pretty interesting to see what can be done when the limit is the sky, and people get creative. [Mobiado via AutoBlog]

CyanogenMod 7 RC4 hits; brings big fix for all devices

59

Only just a few days ago we saw RC3 of CyanogenMod7 rolling out, and today they are releasing RC4. Since RC2 we have seen mainly bug fixes in each update, but this time they have brought a big fix for Open GL (EGL specifically) from the AOSP. Additionally, the Nook Color version has gained hardware acceleration, but unfortunately the Nexus One still may have the call audio bug, and the EVO still has minor GPS issues. Enough of the jabbering, get to downloading, hit up ROM Manager, or CyanogenMod to get your download started. [CyanogenMod]

VZ Navigator for the HTC Merge shows up in Android Market

10

The HTC Merge has sure spent a lot of time in the spotlight, once emerging with Verizon branding, then heading its way to Alltel, and now more confusion to the pot. In the Android Market has surfaced the VZ Navigator for Merge application, which would be the HTC Merge specific version, as we have seen with other devices as well. Things get even more interesting when we have a look at Verizon's exclusive Indycar Mobile app page, where the Merge is listed alongside other known, newish devices that should be seeing the app soon. Could it be, could the HTC Merge be coming to Verizon after all? We have no release information, or if this is a goof up, but the VZ Navigator application appears to have just been released today. [Android Market] Thanks, David!

Samsung Continuum ROM Clean Continuum DL17 [From the Forums]

10

The Samsung Continuum gets an awesome treat from Android Central forums adviser and ROM developer Adrynalyne with his Clean Continuum DL17 ROM.  Samsung Fascinate users should be familiar with Adrynalyne's work, and they'll all tell you it's great.  This has carried over to the Continuum.  The short list of features:

  • Deodexed, Debloated, DeBinged, and mostly, DeTouchwizzed.
  • Visual voice mail is gone, voice mail button in the dialer now opens Google Voice.
  • Verizon Wireless carrier banner replaced.
  • Messaging app will not longer do multi-part messages, but instead converts to MMS automatically once the 160 character mark is hit.
  • GPS has been tweaked.
  • ADW Launcher installed as default

Adrynalyne says that while this is an early beta, it still should be perfectly stable.  It's great to see the Android community at work on phones that don't have the spotlight, and if you're rocking a Continuum you owe it to yourself to have a look.  Check it out in the forums.  Thanks, Adrynalyne, for the hard work!

HTC Inspire case review: Seidio Innocase II Surface

11

The Seidio Innocase II Surface for the HTC Inspire 4G is a great way to protect your HTC Inspire 4G or Desire HD.  Yes, this is one time when our friends across the pond have the same body and outer shell on their version of a phone as we do here in the states.  The case is made of Seidio's unique soft touch material that flexes when needed but is a sort of hard composite material.  I'm not sure exactly what material it's made of, but I know it's tough.  The case is very thin so it keeps the thin profile of the Inspire and adds very little bulk, but offers protection from bumps and dings.

The case cutouts line up very well with all the controls and ports, and wraps around the corners to give just enough of a lip so that the screen won't touch the table if you lay your phone face-down.  On the back, the case is just thick enough so that the camera lens cover won't get scratched.  The two-piece design is coated with a soft flocked material inside to keep your Inspire from getting scratched while putting it on.

The locking "mechanism" on this one seems to have been improved compared to when I've used the same model case on other phones.  It's the same slide and lock system, but it seems stiffer, and almost difficult to remove.  This could be the shape of the Inspire itself at play, but whatever it is the Innocase II Surface isn't going to come apart in your pocket.  The only drawback I found is the cutout for the power button makes it a bit more difficult to turn the phone on and off, but the way the button itself sits far forward on the Inspire's body it's the only way it could have been done.  Seidio does provide a large area to place your finger, and it's probably a matter of getting used to things.

You can get the Seidio Innocase II Surface for the Inspire 4G for $27.95 from the Android Central store in amethyst, blue, black, or burgundy.

HTC confirms ThunderBolt camcorder audio problem, says fix is coming

17

Find the latest HTC ThunderBolt accessories

One issue that's been bugging HTC ThunderBolt owners is the inconsistent audio recording when using the camcorder on the phone. Sometimes sound is record, other times its muffled beyond recognition.

The good news is that HTC has confirmed to us that it's tracked down the problem, and a fix is in the works. That means a software update, of course, and these things can take time to be approved and pushed out. But good on HTC for tracking it down so quickly.

In the meantime, there are some supposed workarounds, from covering up one of the microphones to using a third-party video recorder. Anything else we should try? Hit up the forums for more, and we've got some video samples after the break. [Android Central Forums] Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

HTC Pyramid pokes its dual-core head out once again

53

Well, well, what have we here? More pics of the HTC Pyramid, eh? And indeed it's looking like a sexy beast, with a 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8MP rear camera and VGA front-facing camera, 768MB of usable on-board memory, Android 2.3.2 and the latest version of HTC Sense (that'd be Version 3.0, the same one we saw unveiled at Mobile World Congress).

We're gonna need a moment here, cause that's some sexy hardware.

We're also dying to find out when and where this bad boy is coming. And if it's not coming to the United States, we're going to need to update our passports. More pics at the source, boys and girls. [XDA Developers]
