Google shares details on Project Ara third-party modules and designs with initial MDK release

52
Project Ara

Three sizes of phones with various layouts will give several device style options, module configurations.

With its first developer conference on the horizon, Google has just released the first public version of the Module Developers Kit (MDK) for Project Ara. While things are still very early, the MDK gives us our first in-depth look at how Google is leading third parties into creating Project Ara devices and modules, and how everything will fit together.

The main point of the MDK at this stage is to make third-party manufacturers aware of the guidelines that will soon apply to them for making Project Ara pieces. From what's shown now, we know there will be three sizes of phones — Mini, Medium and Large — with Large being released at a later date. Each size will start with a basic "skeleton" that will then accept components to build a phone, primarily sourced from third parties. There will be different device layouts available within each size category, each giving you room for specific components.

Motorola’s Credit program to potentially introduce new reward tiers

11
Motorola

Free phones, cheap accessories and reward points all up for consideration

Motorola is sending out surveys to its current device financing customers indicating that the company plans to take the service a bit further in the future. Available since November of last year, Motorola's financing program works much the same as any other retailer — you are offered $0 down and 0% interest financing for your phone purchase, with somewhere between six and 18 months to pay off the bill. According to surveys of current customers, Motorola is considering throwing in even more incentives for buying your next phone on credit.

Extras such as discounts on Google products, cheap Motorola accessories, "points" for exchanging your phone and rewards for being a loyal Motorola customer are all up for consideration, though it isn't clear which ones are front-runners at this point.

Facebook to kill in-app messaging in favor of using dedicated Facebook Messenger app

114
Facebook Messenger

Low-end devices with constrained resources can keep using in-app messaging

Facebook is working on transitioning users somewhat forcefully to using their dedicated Messenger app. Warning messages have been sent out to some European users that in about two weeks time, they wouldn’t be able to use the core Facebook app to do their chatting. Though this change will be rolling out globally, there will be exceptions in place for lower-powered Android devices that apparently can’t handle the Pure Awesome of the Facebook Messenger standalone app, and for Facebook’s relatively fresh news app, Paper.

Though this means you’ll need to install and manage two apps, hopefully it will result in greater performance individually. What do you guys think of the change? Do you already have Facebook Messenger installed, or would you rather keep your Facebook chats bundled in the core experience?

Clash of Clans has had one of its biggest updates in the infamous game’s history today. Now players can raid without any risk to their resources, shield, or trophies, and work towards two new achievements. This is done with a new system called war bases, where multiple players can lump all of their troops together in the same place and, once attack day arrives, they all head out to raid other war bases together. In the meantime, your village stays entirely separate from the whole affair. The full details on the update are available at the SuperCell forums.
