Chrome Beta update lets you 'undo' a closed tab, adds support for some multi-window devices

14
Chrome Beta

Quickly re-open that tab you accidentally closed while reading

Those of you on the beta track of Chrome on Android will be receiving an update today with a small, but useful, set of features. First up is the ability to "undo" an accidental tab closure — something that we're all used to being able to do on desktop browsers. Next is improvements to the video player, letting your phone or tablet make use of HTML5 full-screen video with subtitles and on-screen playback controls.

The update also includes support for the multi-window features on some devices (although which ones aren't specified), as well as support for sending some videos from the browser to Chromecast directly. The update is now available from the Play Store at the link above, so long as you're okay with moving over to the beta channel of the browser.

1
Galaxy S5 screenshot

Want to take a screenshot on your Galaxy S5? It's just a couple buttons — or a swipe — away

This Galaxy S5 trick is an old one, but a good one. And it's one you'll certainly want to use. For those of you who are coming to the Samsung Galaxy S5 from another Samsung Galaxy phone, you'll be right at home here. Taking a screenshot on the Galaxy S5 is exactly the same.

But for those of you who are coming over from an iPhone or another Android phone, it's a slightly different procedure. And Samsung's got one really cool trick up its sleeve.

Here's how region-locking works on the European Samsung Galaxy S5

13
Galaxy S5 region lock sticker

Samsung's new region-locking sticker isn't as scary as before, and actually explains what's going on

Think back to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 last year, and you might remember a bit of hubbub surrounding supposedly "unlocked" devices in some countries coming with a so-called region-lock. The situation eventually turned out not to be quite so bad as was first feared, with devices being fully unlocked if they were "activated" with a SIM from within the approved region.

The situation with the Galaxy S5's region lock is a bit different, and fortunately the sticker on the box fully explains what's going on this time.

Download Booster on Galaxy S5

Only T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular in the U.S. offering the Wifi and 4G LTE combined download tool

One of the many features Samsung crowed about when launching the Galaxy S5 in Barcelona was Download Booster. A hybrid of your Wifi and 4G LTE data connection, it's there to help you download large files faster. The good news if you're a T-Mobile customer is that you'll be able to use it. The bad news for folks on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint is that you can't.

Google might just let anybody buy Google Glass in one-day promotion [Update: It's official]

109
Google Glass

Website goes live at 6am PT on the 15th to take orders from anyone in the U.S.

Update: Well, that didn't take long — Google has just confirmed that April 15th is the date when anyone will be able to plop down their $1500 and buy Google Glass without any kind of invite or crazy qualification. Simply live in the U.S. and be 18 years old, and you'll be able to buy Glass starting at 6am PT on the 15th from the Google Glass website.

Original story: Google will soon open up their Google Glass Explorers program to anyone in the United States for a very limited time. The expansion could start as soon as Tuesday, April 15th. This is not intended as the consumer launch of Glass, and the program will only be open to the public for about a day. Google will apparently throw in one of their Glass accessories with the purchase, according to The Verge:

It’ll be a limited-time offer, only available for about a day, and only US residents will be eligible to purchase the $1,500 device. Google will also include a free sunglass shade or one of its newly-introduced prescription glasses frames along with any purchase. An internal Google slide shows that the promotion may be announced on April 15th, though all the details of this program have yet to be finalized.

If Google opens up Glass to the public, even for a limited time, will you get it? Let us know below in the comments.

Aereo to support Chromecast starting May 29th

18

Aereo, the service that lets you watch terrestrial over-the-air TV on other devices via the internet, has announced that its Android app will support Chromecast streaming starting May 29th. The functionality will come with an update to its app, which is currently in beta on the Play Store.

While Aereo is already a pretty neat idea and a great value — if you happen to be in a market where it's available — at $8 per month, the addition of Chromecast streaming brings things to another level. With the price of a Chromecast being less than what you'd spend on a good HDTV antenna yourself, you'll now be able to stream live local programming direct to your TV and seamlessly move between the big screen and your phone or tablet.
