myTouch 4G Gingerbread leak brings a new way to tweak your settings

15

Well, how about that. Another Gingerbread leak has dropped from our favorite Chinese HTC ROM dumping ground -- this time for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. It's Android 2.3.3 -- not the just-announced Android 2.3.4 with video chat in Google Talk -- and it's clearly labeled as a test build. But it's also a clear sign that the MT4G is likely to get Gingerbread in the near future.

So what's new? (Or, more important, what's new that's not a behind-the-scenes bugfix?) You've now got a cool "Quick Settings) menu when you pull down the notification bar. Your recently used apps are still there in the notifications, but you can tab over and toggle Wifi, Bluetooth, Wifi hotspot, GPS, mobile data, and hop straight into the settings. It's a cool little addition to an already cool twist on the HTC Sense user interface.

If you're running a stock myTouch 4G, you'll probably want to sit this one out. But we've got video of the leak in action after the break, so you're not totally stuck on the sidelines. Downloads are available at the source links.

It was a busy week in the Android world and here at Android Central as we got ahold of a variety of new devices, two of which have been officially released. The Droid Incredible 2 and the Casio G'zOne Commando were released on Verizon last week. The Droid Charge was supposed to join them, but was delayed due to LTE issues. We also got a good look at the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and ASUS EeePad Transformer. There are loads of exciting devices hitting stored and coming soon, so check out our initial reviews for the one that suits you best.

22

As promised, Best Buy has launched its pre-order page for the HTC Flyer WiFi-only model for $499. The estimated arrival dates are between May 22 and 27, so it would seem HTC has pegged a late May launch for the tablet. Make sure you check out our hands-on with the Flyer WiFi and then jump past the source link to reserve a Flyer of your own.

Droid Charge found inside a Walmart, more evidence of a Tuesday launch?

11

Read our Droid Charge initial review

We just learned that the Droid Charge could finally be released Tuesday and that Costco would begin receiving the device on Monday. And backing that up even further is this picture of Droid Charges at Walmart, making things that much more likely.

The delay comes in the wake of last week's LTE crash, leaving Verizon customers with the HTC Thunderbolt -- a 4G phone like the Droid Charge -- stuck on the relatively ancient 1xRTT network. No sense releasing a 4G phone that can't do 4G. (Oh hai Moto Xoom.)

Thanks, Anon!

Acer Iconia Tab coming to Target stores May 15?

17

We just got this in from a tipster working at Target who received a non-retail, working display model of the Acer Iconia Tab.  A quick inspection of the box label tells us that the proposed sale date is May 15, thanks to some squinting and a bit of photo editing software wizardry.  We know that you can snag one at Best Buy for $450, but as my wife often reminds me "You might find that cheaper at Target".

Having said that, there's no word on any pricing, or if this will be at all Target stores or just a select few.  Hopefully this is just the beginning and we soon see a full scale pricing war for tablets from all vendors.  There's another pic of the back of the box after the break.

Thanks, Anon!

Droid Charge may go on sale Tuesday (Updated with more confirmation)

40

Read our Droid Charge initial review

The question on everyone's mind this week following the crash of Verizon's LTE network and the delay of the Samsung Droid Charge is "When will the phone finally go on sale?" If the above screen shot is any indication, Tuesday may be the day.

It looks like Costco is expecting to start getting the Droid Charge on Monday (it'll either get a "Go" or a revised launch date on Monday, too), with a hard "do not sell" order until Tuesday. And all locations should be stocked by the end of the day on Wednesday.

So it's not asking too much to read into this that the Droid Charge could be available to the general public -- and not just at Costco -- on Tuesday. We've certainly got our fingers crossed. While you wait, be sure to check out our initial review. And we've got one more pic after the break.

Update: We've gotten a Costco inventory screen that confirms what you see above, with an "expected arrival" of May 5. Check it out after the break.

Thanks, Anon!

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is already a beast -- and now it's rooted

21

Look out, all you tweakers and overclockers -- there's a new kid on the block who's likely to take the throne in very short order -- the Samsung Galaxy S 2.  Right out of the box it's an awesome performer, chewing through benchmark tests like candy even with less than optimized software on board.  We're hearing from all over about how smooth and quick it is, and everyone seems pretty darn impressed.

And to make things a bit more interesting, the phone isn't locked down in any way and already has a fairly easy root method from Chainfire over at XDA.  We can't wait to see what happens with this one, as it appears we're at a whole 'nother level of performance here.  Samsung needs to hurry with that roll-out!

Source: XDA-Developers. Big Thanks to Jonathan for the image, and Chainfire for the tip!

T-Mobile pokes the bear, chides Verizon for its day of LTE downtime

48

If we were Verizon, we'd probably just point to the subscriber scoreboard, stick our hands in our pockets (filled with cash) and walk away from T-Mobile's taunts. And maybe say something about people in glass houses.
