Android 5.0 Lollipop, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player: Welcome to the next era of Android

191
Android 5.0 era

With a new phone, tablet and living room play — to say nothing of new hardware — Android ushers in its next generation

And with that we've just had a whole bunch of Android awesomeness dumped upon us. Android 5.0 Lollipop is officially official. New nickname, a pretty major bump in version number (for what that's worth), and ... more waiting to be done. A new SDK drops Oct. 17, as well as new preview images. But we've still got a ways to go before final production software hits any devices.

Then we've got the well-leaked Nexus 6 smartphone, and the new Nexus 9 tablet beside it — from first-time Nexus manufacturer Motorola, and the return of HTC! — and ... there's more waiting to be done. They'll go up for preorder Oct. 17, and be available in early November. There's a mix of familiar and new here, and the more important of the two devices might surprise you. But we also have a few questions that will need to be answered in time.

And finally there's the new Nexus Player. This one, like Chromecast before it, largely managed to avoid any pre-announcement leakage. We've been expecting something given that Android TV demo boxes have been floating around with developers since Google I/O, but what we saw announced today actually is a bit of a departure. And we've got questions about that as well.

Read on for a breakdown of the important parts of today's news, and what remains to be answered.

This official Nexus Player video reminds us that we'll never see the Nexus Q in white

23

Google has posted an "official" Nexus Player video on YouTube. It shows off the circular design, gives us a glance at voice search via the remote, and even reminds us of the quad-core Intel Silvermont CPU. Not a list of things we don't already know, but it's well done and something every Android fan will want to see. Click it above and have a look.

And when it's done, notice the first link in the grid of related videos. Seeing the Nexus Q video again is little heartbreaking, especially if you fast-forward to 1:47. That's where you see the white Nexus Q.

Yes, even the 2012 Nexus 7 will get updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop

116

It looks like Google is being especially generous in terms of the devices that will get updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. In addition to the Nexus 4, the Nexus 5, the 2013 Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10, Google will also update the 2012 version of the Nexus 7 tablet to Lollipop.

Nexus 6 will support wireless charging

53

But Nexus 9 tablet owners will have to charge the old-fashioned way

Wireless charging isn't mentioned in the official Nexus 6 spec sheet on Google.com, but apparently that's just another launch-day oversight. A separate, more complete spec sheet distributed by Google to press reveals that wireless charging is indeed supported and built-in, just like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. The Qi charging standard isn't explicitly mentioned, but since this is used by other Nexus devices it's highly likely it's what the N6 is packing.

nexus 6 t-mobile

As we reported earlier, the Nexus 6 is all set to hit every major U.S. carrier when it launches later this fall. It's important, then, that carriers do what they can to set themselves apart from the pack. T-Mobile is doing just that today, and has announced that the Nexus 6 will support Wi-Fi calling on T-Mobile via an over-the-air update available in early 2015.

In pictures: The Android Lollipop statue

47
Lollipop

As is traditional when a new version of Android lands, Google has taken the wraps off a new statue for its lawn outside Building 44, the home base of the Android team. Having just been publicly unveiled, the Lollipop statue — representing the newly-unveiled Android 5.0 is in transit currently elsewhere on the Google campus. Nevertheless, we've managed to track it down to bring you a first look.

Check out our gallery after the break.

Nexus 4 will get Lollipop, Google says

72
Nexus 4 Lollipop

The humble Nexus 4 wasn't mentioned in the first draft of Nexus devices getting Android 5.0 Lollipop, but owners of the two-year-old LG handset needn't fear. According to Googler Sascha Prüter, the omission was an error, and sure enough the post has now been updated to reflect that change.

The line in question now reads:

Google has an Android 5.0 Lollipop party with new live action and animated TV ads

41

Google is wasting no time promoting its new Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. It has officially launched new TV ads promoting the operating system and its devices on its YouTube channel, with both live action and animated clips.

The two live action ads, each of which is about a minute in length, are a study in contrasts. One is a somewhat thoughtful look at how some people should expand their horizons beyond the norm. The other is a fast paced clip with lots of dancing, smiling faces, and Andrew W.K.'s "Party Hard" as the backing song.

Nexus Player is the first Android TV box

135
Nexus Player

Alongside today's Lollipop announcement, Google took the wraps off the first Android TV set-top box. Made by ASUS and powered by an Intel CPU, the Nexus Player is shaped like an oversized hockey puck, and comes with a voice control-enabled remote. A Nexus game controller for the device will be sold separately too, and Google describes the Nexus Player as a "first of its kind" Android gaming device, as well as a fully-featured streaming box.

Inside there's a 1.8GHz Intel Atom CPU and a PowerVR GPU, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Along with the Nexus 9 tablet it'll be available for pre-order on Oct. 17 and in stores starting November 3, priced $99.

Android TV, announced at this year's Google IO, is the company's latest effort to get into the TV space. For more info, check out our topic page.

Nexus Player specs

57

The Nexus Player came a bit out of left field as Google's latest Android TV box, and it looks like a very interesting device at just $99. It doesn't have the highest-end specs inside, but it has more than enough to handle Android TV and you can't beat the size either.
