Tim Bray joins Google on Android team

0

While it may be the new OS in the game, Android continues to grow, and Google understands they need to grow at the same pace. Recently we saw that the creator of the cell phone has switched to Android, like many other smartphone users. Google has been lucky enough to get the co-creator of XML to join their team as an Android Advocate. Tim Bray has left Oracle, and joined the Google team for Android development as he hopes to bring things to the next level. Tim has made it clear in his blog post that he is a fan of the open source OS, and doesn't like the feeling of being restricted by any company. While the team behind Android continues to grow, we can only hope these growths to transpire into new additions in both hardware and software for consumers. [via ZDNet]

HTC Droid Eris finally rooted!

19

You read that right, folks. At long last, the HTC Droid Eris on Verizon has been rooted. You're going to have to have the stock Android 1.5 phone to get this done, so if you've already installed the leaked 2.1 ROM, you're out of luck. Check out the video after the break, and get the full rundown at AndroidMobileOS and XDA Developers.

Motorola Backflip hands-on video

19

Ah, the Motorola Backflip. An odd little phone with a keyboard that flips up under the screen, and a trackpad on the back. Strange, to say the least. But, oddly enough, it works. At least until you turn the thing on.

While some have lamented AT&T's locking-down of the device -- namely in not allowing the sideloading of apps switching to Yahoo instead of Google for search -- it's the internal hardware that's a letdown with the Backflip. Join us after the break.

HTC Legend user's guide now available

HTC has made available the user guide for the Legend, which now appears to be exclusive on Vodafone for the time being. And for your guys and gals in the U.S., this user guide may be as close as you get to the phone for a little while, so read slowly. It'll last longer. [HTC]

Android running on HTC Touch Pro 2

17

A lot of Windows Mobile users are waiting for Windows Phone 7 Series to release and that's completely fair, it looks amazing. But what should you do with your Windows Mobile devices in the mean time? Why, get them to run Android of course! The Touch Pro 2 joins a series of WinMob devices that have been hacked to run Android and this one is actually in great working condition. The Sprint Touch Pro 2 is able to make phone calls, send and receive SMS, and run data. Sounds like everything to us (GPS, Bluetooth don't work).

We reviewed the HTC Touch Pro 2 in the Smartphone Round Robin and loved the 'power' design of it. And for it to run Android? Awesome. It probably has the best keyboard on an 'Android' device.

hit the jump to see a video of the HTC Touch Pro 2 running Android!

Looking Closer at HTC's Touch Sensors

16

After seeing some potential issues with the Nexus One multitouch, Android and Me has taken some time to visit the topic a bit more in depth. It appears as though the Nexus One touchscreen is not really "broken" like first reported, but more so limited by the hardware. The screen used in the Nexus One, the ClearPad 2000, is indeed designed to handle multitouch functionality, and in many cases like Google Maps, or the gallery, these features work rather well.

The issue appears to become most transparent when third party developers use more complex motions in their games, and the device can simply not keep up. While unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is an immediate fix for this, besides developers "dumbing" down their games to not include these extreme multitouch needs, we can all hope that HTC will upgrade their choice to the ClearPad 3000. Check out the performance of this screen after the jump. [via Android and Me]

How to properly set up and use a task killer (Oh, yes, I went there!)

46

Ed. note: Sorry for the problem, everybody. The column's now here in its entirety.

Hey everybody. This week lets talk about the thorn in Android's side – efficient task management.

Before we get started, yes I'm one of those people who will say “Stop using the task killer” as a first response to some weird questions. Lots of other pretty knowledgeable folks will say the same thing. They (we) are right. Task killer applications tend to cause a lot of problems simply because using them properly can be a bit confusing, especially with all the conflicting information out there. Follow us after the break and let's figure this out once and for all.

Root Your Telus Milestone

7

It's finally time for all you Telus Milestone owners to finally have root access on your device! Over at AllDroid they have compiled instructions based from the knowledge and information of many different developers and hackers within the Android community. While the rooting for this device, which includes having to flash to a Brazilian .sbf file, is a bit more intricate then many of the other devices at least it is a start. It doesn't appear the kernel is yet available, but beggars can't be choosers, can they?

Keep in mind, this is a risky process, and should be done at your own peril (or at least at your phone's peril). If you have questions, or need help with this process, jump into the forums. [AllDroid via Boy Genius Report]
