AT&T Captivate retail box, promo video are heavy on the Galaxy S

11

Behold, the retail box for the AT&T Samsung Captivate, which will be available July 18 for $199 after two-year contract. You'll note how the front of the box, at least, is way heavy on the "Samsung Galaxy S" and light on any mention of Android. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily, though it certainly stands out. Same goes for the promo video that's making the YouTube rounds (and which you can see after the break). Figure with the Galaxy S launching on all four major U.S. carrier in the next month or so, this is just tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned, folks. [via Engadget]

FCC approves Moto MB710; looks like the Motoroi, and headed for T-Mobile

8

The Motorola MB710 (which looks and sounds a lot like the Motoroi) has been cleared by the FCC, and it appears headed to T-Mobile.  The FCC documents include a user manual mockup that shows us MyFaves, and the radio bands (1700 MHz AWS) pretty much scream that T-Mobile is where it's headed.  Wonder which device on the leaked roadmap it could be?

What we know about specs: MOTOBLUR, 3.5 mm headset jack, GPS, WiFi, bluetooth, microSD card support, 8 megapixel camera, and a xenon flash.  If this is really a Motoroi variant, we can expect Android 2.1, and the familiar 3.7 480x854 LCD display.  Of course, not a peep from Motorola or T-Mobile about the handset, so educated guesses are the rule of the day. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro gets a Grand Slam unboxing

14

Normally when we see celebrity smartphone unboxings we see names like Michaluk, Bohn, Ritchie and Nickinson. In this case, Sony Ericsson went out and got Maria Sharapova, who's a pretty good tennis player or something, to unbox the Xperia X10 Mini Pro. (See our own hands-on.) What she's got that the rest of us don't -- besides looks and game, of course -- remains to be seen. So what's up, SE? Lose our numbers? Anyhoo, check out the video after the break. (Oh, by the way, Maria -- that finger tapping things looks a little familiar.) [Sony Ericsson Product Blog via Androinica]

Comscore for May 2010 in -- Android gains 4 points, hits double digits

12

The Comscore results for May 2010 are in, and it comes as no surprise that Android is still skyrocketing towards the top spot in US smartphone market share.  While ALL other platforms show a loss, Android comes in with another big jump of 4 percentage points and now has reached a double digit share of 13 percent, just a hair shy of Microsoft's 13.4 percent and poised to take the third spot overall.

The chart speaks for itself -- Android grows while the others fall.  The biggest drop was from the Microsoft camp (down 1.9 points), followed by Apple with a 1 point drop.  A few months ago we asked if Android's rise was a fluke based on the sales of the Droid, and I think we can safely say no, we have that friggin' movement we hoped for on our hands.  And before anyone starts shouting "iPhone 4 wasn't out, yada yada", remember that users upgrading from one phone to another on the same platform do not contribute to growth -- this is all new users we're seeing.  I'm sure our Google overlords are pleased, and so am I.  [Comscore]

Trillian for Android is on its way

14

Many of you have asked -- or flat-out begged, according to Cerulean Studios, the developers of the popular all-in-one messenger application Trillian to come to Android. This application is very popular on a variety of platforms ranging from Macs to Windows and iPhones to BlackBerrys, and it seemed the only missing platform was Android (OK, and Palm), and luckily the cries have been heard. Here's the feature list.

  • Connect to Facebook Chat, Windows Live, Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP and MySpaceIM
  • Synchronize your contacts, avatars, status, accounts and more with your Trillian-enabled desktop or mobile apps
  • Get notified easily with Android notification system integration
  • Contact list sorting, grouping, metacontacts support, privacy settings and various ways to organize
  • Set status, avatar and display name quickly in one simple screen
  • Tabbed chat windows with bubble view, photo transfer, buzz and emoticon support
  • Support for Android phones as far back as version 1.6 – works with your good old T-Mobile G1 or the newest HTC Evo 4G or Motorola Droid!
  • We took special care and respect to design and build the user interface to smoothly integrate with Android – this is not just a clone from the iPhone!

The application is said to be hitting a beta stage within the next few weeks, so keep your eyes on the lookout, and be sure to keep up to date with their blog. Couple more screen shots after the break. [via Cerulean Studios Blog]

Fring updated so Android and iPhone can play together

15

The Fring app for the iPhone got an update today (see our previous Android-related hands-on) that lets it play nice with Android (and Symbian, too). That means us Android users can have video chats with our misbegotten friends who shelled out for the new shiny thing from Apple. We recommend you show off using your Android phone left-handed, in the middle of a large city, while installing whatever you want. Just to give 'em a hard time, ya know?

Want to see it in action? Check out the video after the break (and check out TiPB's here) where we chat it up with TiPB.com's Rene Ritchie on his newfangled iThingy. [Fring]

Pro tip: Wipe porn off your phone before exchanging it

38

OK, we've talked (several times) about how the Android phone is for porn. And we've talked about how during a full wipe on your Android phone doesn't necessarily kill off every file that might have been downloaded. (And this gets even more murky with phones that have dedicated internal storage.)

Anyway, where we're going with this is that if you're sending back your a phone -- be it for exchange, or repair, or whatever -- don't leave little pornographic surprises behind for the next person. 'Cause that's what happened to an Ann Arbor, Mich., woman who found either five (or a half-dozen, depending on who you ask) porn videos on her supposedly new Evo 4G. It's not the phone's fault -- it's the previous owner, and the third-party retailer that told the woman she was getting a new phone and instead gave her a steamy pot of porno.

And because we're all about teaching you folks whenever we can, hit the source link or picture above to hear all about it, and then let's discuss a few ways you can be sure to keep your phone clean, after the break. [Click on Detroit via Consumerist]
