Frontback comes to Android, lets you take photos with both sides of your phone

13

A popular photography app called Frontback just found its way from iOS to Android today. Though it’s fundamentally another photo-sharing app, it’s got the resonably fun gimmick of shooting from both the front and back camera at the same time. Both images are posted, one on top of the other, leading to some interesting pairings.

If you just picked up Google Glass from the one-day sale yesterday and you’re planning a vacation, you’re in luck (and not just because you’re going somewhere sunny with a shiny new gadget). Starwood Hotels has announced that they’ve got a beta app ready to go to book your room. LG announces development of in-house mobile processors

21

LG is teaming up with TSMC to manufacture their own processors. LG has long used Qualcomm processors in their devices, but the move to design and build their own processors follows in the footsteps of Android rival Samsung, who has been manufacturing their own Exynos processors for years. Apple, too, has been designing their own processors, including the Apple A7 that powers the most recent generation iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and iPad Mini.

The Galaxy S5 Finger Scanner 'hack' reminds us of the value of strong passwords

43
Galaxy S5 Finger Scanner

The value of a strong password to protect your stuff is as high as ever

There's been a bit of a hubbub around the web about the "hack" of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Finger Scanner, and how "easy" it was.

First things first, it wasn't easy. If you're stealing a phone with the necessary equipment to also lift and reproduce someones fingerprint, then OK. You're also probably a more intense criminal than someone who randomly snatches peoples' phones.

It isn't a "hack" really, either. It's a "spoof," just as it was on the iPhone 5s. In fact, it's the exact same method that Apple's Touch ID was fooled by. So it's not so much an issue specifically with the Galaxy S5, more a flaw of fingerprint scanners in general. But that doesn't make for sensationalist headlines. So, just like the iPhone 5s and Touch ID before it, the Galaxy S5 falls into the spotlight.

And once more it highlights something we should already be aware of: use strong passwords on all of your private stuff.

The HTC One M8 Flip Case

20
HTC One M8 Flip Case

Next up on our tour of HTC One M8 cases — we've already taken a look at the extremely popular Dot View case and HTC's TPU case — is HTC's Flip Case. This is a more traditional endeavor. No crazy 8-bit dots. No quick-peek windows.

And so what you get here is a pretty straightforward matter. Plastic shell on the back. Rigid cover for the front, with cutouts for the BoomSound speakers (which, by the way, work just fine with the flap closed, including during a phone call). Cutouts for the DuoCamera setup, flash and secondary microphone. Plenty of room to get to the microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the power button and IR port up top.

Put simply, this is a no-frills, high-function (and not bad-looking) flip case.

iFixit tears down Google's Project Tango prototype

12

Google's Project Tango is a device unlike any other, and it's also one most of us will never actually get to see. It is just a developer prototype after all. But, that hasn't stopped those teardown-mongers at iFixit getting hold of a non-functional unit and stripping it bare for us to see what's inside.
