Southern Miss buys 1,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets for Honors College pilot program

Samsung today announced that the University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss, to those of us from south of the Mason-Dixon Line) has purchased 1,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets to provide to students in its Honors College pilot program.

It's not all fun and games -- the tablets will be preloaded with Blackboard Mobile, so they can do some of that learning stuff we hear goes on in colleges. The rest of the time? We know what they'll be doing.

Android kids app: Kids Maps for Honeycomb tablets

3

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Android tablets are great educational (and babysitting) tools. And it's with that in mind that we take a look at Kids Maps, as reviewed by a soon-to-be 5-year-old.

Kids Maps is really nicely done, blurring the line between puzzle and teaching tool. You've got 50 states, and you have to put them in the right place. When a new state appears, you get a quick fact about it. For instance: Polar bears live in Alaska. Betcha didn't know that.

Gameplay's really simple -- you just drag the state to the empty map. Dragging is smooth, but it's pretty easy to just drag the state around until it finds the right spot, as you'll see my little cheater do in the video. If you do manage to drop the state in the wrong place more than a couple times, it'll outline the correct spot.

There aren't many options to this one -- you can choose either to place states randomly, or receive them alphabetically, which can be helpful if someone's having to learn the states in alphabetical order.

The game itself is really nice done, with nice music and clear speech and instructions. Our only real complaints are that 50 states are a lot to do in one sitting -- perhaps breaking it down by regions might make things a little more fun. Also, more facts will make playing it a second and third time a little more fun. But if you've got a budding geography expert who also loves puzzles, you could spend $2.99 worse ways.

We've got download links after the breaks if you want to give Kids Maps a go.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" shows off Galaxy Tab 8.9" retail mode

17

YouTube link for mobile viewing

Looking for something cool but not overly useful to do with your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? Might as well check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" retail mode that has been loaded onto it since Samsung saw fit to leave it on there. As you can tell from the video above, it's as you would expect -- just a demo video of what the device is capable of in addition to showing off the new TouchWiz UI. Here is how you can do it:

  • Update your Galaxy Tab if you haven't
  • Go to Categories > Utilities
  • Install the 8.9" retail mode app
  • Launch the app, press OK and then enter the password 5444
  • Check the "Service Enable"  box -- it will be on a new screen, and then press the lock button.
  • Demo will start shortly.

That's it. Sit back and enjoy the video and know you'll soon be getting the new TouchWiz UI you see before you.

Thanks, Will!

Toshiba to issue update to address Thrive's sleep issue

0

Toshiba's PR firm just hit us up to say that they've tackled the oversleeping problem the Thrive tablet has been experiencing, and a fix is on the way. To wit:

Toshiba recently became aware that a limited number of Thrive Tablet users were experiencing Resume issues when in Sleep mode. We have heard from a Toshiba source that a software update to resolve this issue will be available early next week and can be accessed from the Service Station utility app found on the Thrive at that time. This will improve sleep-and-resume performance, as well as enhance the multimedia playback capabilities of the device.'

Not a bad turnaround for a fix -- in and out in just a few weeks. Shame it had to happen in the first place, but these things do happen.

Video gives an early look at ASUS' EeePad Slider

17

ASUS has already seen widespread success with its EeePad Transformer, but up until now we haven't seen much of the device that launched alongside it -- the EeePad Slider. Today, Romanian blog ImiDoresc.ro has published a short video presentation featuring a prototype of the Honeycomb tablet, showing off its trademark slide-out keyboard and software, based on Android 3.1.

Join us after the jump to check out the video. The EeePad Slider is due to launch in Europe this Fall, having recently been delayed past its original August release window. Be sure to let us know in the comments whether you'd prefer a device like the Slider over the traditional slab of glass.

Sprint announces Q2 earnings, LTE data deal with LightSquared

38

The rumors were true, folks. Sprint's going LTE with LightSquared in a 15-year deal. It sounds a little backward, but the gist is this: LightSquared's going to pay Sprint around $9 billion in cash over 11 years, and in exchange Sprint gets up to 50 percent of LightSquared's "L-Band" LTE spectrum through credits.

LightSquared comes out ahead, too, lowering its operating costs and network capital by more than $13 billion over the next eight years by making use of Sprint's infrastructure. LightSquared also will provide 3G roaming for Sprint.

So when can you see an LTE smartphone on Sprint? That's still going to be a while, with LightSquared's first 4G markets (which weren't disclosed) not going online until 2012. So, for now, it's still WiMax. LightSquared's expects to complete its nationwide 4G rollout in 2014.

Also, Sprint this morning announced its Q2 2011 earnings, noting revenues of $8.3 billion, and a net loss of $847 million

Press releases: Sprint 1, 2; LightSquared

Win one of 10 MyBackup Pro licenses

28

If you've ever switched Android phones, or like to tinker and are always changing things up a bit, you know how nice it is to have a backup program that works.  That's where MyBackup Pro comes in -- it's powerful and full of options for the advanced user, but simple enough for the average user to get all their data safely backed up with little fuss.  It's one of those apps that you'll hear recommended quite a bit, and for good reason.  You can back up things like your SMS messages, browser bookmarks, contacts, applications and more -- either locally or on Rerware secure online servers.  And if you're rooted, you can even back up your application data so you never lose your Angry Birds levels again.

There's a lot to love, especially with the latest update, and we're going to take a deeper look at it.  But in the meantime, the folks at Rerware have hooked us up with 10 licenses for MyBackup Pro to share with you guys.  You won't wanna miss out on this one, there's a reason it has over 7,500 five-star ratings in the Android Market.  Hit the contest forums for contest details and a chance to win, and we've got a link to download the 30 day trial version after the break.

ASUS Transformer to receive Android Honeycomb 3.2 update tomorrow

41

ASUS announced via Twitter today that their EeePad Transformer will receive the Honeycomb 3.2 update tomorrow, July 28. Though we knew ASUS was testing 3.2, it's refreshing to see a manufacturer turn an update around so quickly . Honeycomb 3.2 brings with it compatability zoom for phone apps, support for microSD loading, and other tablet-based optimizations. No word on whether ASUS will be gradually rolling out the update (and how long that would take) or releasing to all at once, but we'll keep our ears open for more word. Be sure to check your Transformer for updates tomorrow and keep us posted in the comments below.
