Samsung to integrate Google TV, announcement in January?

5

Samsung is rumored to be integrating its televisions with Google TV, and an announcement is possible in January. We've already seen products from Sony and Logitech, but Samsung's entrance to the space would be huge as they are the world's largest television maker.

A move like this makes sense for Samsung; it has been bullish on Android with their widely successful Galaxy S phones and newly released Galaxy Tab.

This would also bring Google TV into millions of more homes when consumers look to upgrade their television rather than have to buy a separate set top box.

Google TV is going to be ubiquitous, let's hope Eric Schmidt was correct yesterday when he said they were making progress in talks with the networks. To discuss Samsung's adoption of the software or more, head to our Google TV forums. [Bloomberg]

Live action Angry Birds video reveals tense negotiations

20

If you haven't heard of Angry Birds, you must never, ever visit Android Central.  Or watch any of Phil's videos.  Or ever listen to the podcast

Taken from Eretz Nehederet -- an Israeli comedy TV show -- this exceptionally well made clip finds our favorite, less-than-pleased birds in the middle of tense negotiations with the green, egg-thieving pigs we aim to destroy.

Due to a four-letter word you won't hear on TV, we have to say this is mildly NSFW, but still good for some laughs.

Check out the video after the jump!

Verizon flipping LTE switch in December

24

Verizon on Sunday unveiled its first TV commercial for its upcoming LTE service. Its 4G data is being billed as the most "advanced" 4G network (to go up against T-Mobile's "largest" claims and Sprint's inarguable "first 4G network" mantra). And along with the commercial, there have been reports of a December launch being mentioned online, and that's the screen shot you see above; the website has since had the "December" part removed.

December's not a hard month to peg for the launch of the LTE service. Verizon said it'd be up and running in 38 metro areas and 62 airports (plus a smattering of West Virginia) and by the end of the year, and we've only got about a week left in November -- and a holiday week at that. Toss on the Dec. 6 date we've heard mentioned in regards to the HTC Mecha/aka Incredible HD (we do NOT think the phone will be launching or even announced on that date), and the coincidences are piling up. Circumstantial, to be sure, but a December launch is hardly a stretch.

Anyhoo, don't look for any LTE Android smartphones before 2011. Just ain't gonna happen (probably). But we'll take high-speed data from Verizon any way we can. In the meantime, check out the first LTE commercial after the break. [Verizon] Thanks, Andrew!

Get voice calling on your AT&T, Rogers and Bell Galaxy Tab

13

If you have recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab on AT&T, Rogers or Bell and wished that you could use it to make voice calls, you are in luck. XDA member ClubTech has released a method that works on these carriers that will allow you to bring voice calling to your tablet. Unfortunately this method will not work on T-Mobile due to its IMEI block (you'll need this method for that), and will not work on CDMA carriers, either, for the semi-obvious reasons. (Hint: They're not GSM.) Hit the source link for full download links and instructions to bring voice calling to your tablet! XDA Developers]

Gingerbread: What's the holdup? [from the forums]

Android Central Forums member Hearthatvoiceagain asks the question that's on everybody's mind: Where is Gingerbread? Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Android 2.3 is coming in the next few weeks, but it's been a month since the Gingerbread statue was dropped off at the Google Campus, and still we have no announcement. And that's a break from tradition -- Cupcake, Donut and Froyo were announced within a couple of week of their statues' unveiling.

So what's the holdup? Is Gingerbread just not ready? Is that rumored delay of the Nexus S true, and so we have to wait for Gingerbread? Or maybe everything is going according to Google's plan?

And will Google unveil Gingerbread during a holiday week?

Join in on the discussion and let us know what you think.

What's holding up Android 2.3. Gingerbread?

Droid 2 Global officially acknowledged by Verizon on Facebook

8

Verizon has finally and officially, kind of, sort of announced the Motorola Droid 2 Global on its Facebook page. You've actually been able to preorder the Droid 2 Global for a while now, but now it's official -- and $20 more than its initial listing -- at $199.99 after two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate. In return you get the Droid 2 upgraded with a SIM card so you can use it overseas (forget about using it on T-Mobile and AT&T), plus a faster 1.2GHz processor.

It's also interesting that it's the lone entry on Verizon's DroidDoes site, cementing the thought that it has replaced the original Droid 2, which is just a few months old. Anybody buying now? [Facebook, Verizon via AndroidOS.in]

HTC Merge user-agent string appears, confirms our hands-on info

2

Looking for a little more news on the HTC Merge? We've gotcha covered. First off, that rumored launch last Thursday was never true (and obviously didn't happen). A quick call to HTC last week cleared that up -- it basically was PR whoopsie, same as when it supposedly was going to be given away as a prize in the Verizon Urban Challenge in Seattle.

So what do we have that's new? The user-agent string has hit HTC's servers. Not a lot there that we didn't already know from our exclusive hands-on -- QWERTY keyboard, 480x800 touchscreen, the usual audio/video info, blah, blah, blah.

What we still don't know is a release date. Nov. 23's been kicked around some, but with everybody's track record predicting guessing so far, we'll see it when we believe it. [HTC] Thanks, T!
