Sprint Hero update rolling out now

24

If you own an HTC Hero and you're tired of your GPS and dialer acting up, it's time to update your phone -- now. Software version 2.31.651.7 is hitting the phones as we speak, well, as we type. We got wind of this update coming through a few days ago. Oh, and remember -- this is not Froyo! Sprint already confirmed via Twitter, that the Hero will not be getting Froyo. Make sure your hitting that system update button in your settings if your still waiting on the software fix. Also, be sure to head on over to the Android Central Forums talk all about it. People are already receiving the update. One more pic after the break. Thanks, Zachary.

LG Optimus on T-Mobile to allow Wifi calling?

2

LG introduced two new devices to its Optimus lineup last week, the Optimus One and the Optimus Chic. They are both international devices that left those of us living in the United States feeling  a little left out. However, a phone simply called the Optimus seems to be headed to T-Mobile.

The picture resembles the Optimus One very closely. The specs aren't that far off either, but are adjusted just enough to make them separate.

Here are the rumored specs:

  • 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen
  • 3.2 MP camera
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • Android 2.2 (Froyo)
  • Portable hotspot
  • Ability to make calls using Wi-Fi

Huh what? We were just complaining about how T-Mobile hasn't brought UMA support to Android, and with the Optimus it looks like they have answered our cries. Maybe We've seen specs like this fall apart before.

But overall, an intriging device, especially if it is priced low upon release. [Tmonews]

T-Mobile G2 pre-order page online

9

Ready to preorder your T-Mobile G2?  You now can, online at T-Mobile's G2 page.  T-Mobile says the device will launch on October 6th as suspected, and will cost you $249.99 after before rebate and on contract, and $499.99 outright.  That's a little higher than anyone expected, and is sure to be a source of contention across the tubes.

Another major source of the same contention, is that many folks aren't able to preorder the G2 through their T-Mobile account, while others are reporting no problems and getting delivery dates as early as the end of next week.  Unfortunately, I fall in the former, so I'll have to dust off the phone icon and actually make a phone call in the AM.  In their defense, T-Mobile did take the time to inform everyone that there were problems, and that they're working on it.  Remember to save at least one for me in the morning.

Update: The T-Mobile order page is online and running, That $249.99 quoted above is before a $50.00 rebate, with the off-contract price unchanged at $499.99.  Just about what everyone expected.  [T-Mobile]

Mozilla's Seabird smartphone concept -- community-driven awesomesauce

33

We joke in the podcast chatroom that myself, or someone like me should invent and design the next Android phone.  Imagine the Homer if you will.  Thankfully, someone better qualified and smarter has taken the task to heart, and the Mozilla Labs Seabird concept is born.  Note the word concept -- this is just a pipe dream so far, but it's such a damn nice pipe dream we had to share.  Imagine a phone running Android, with all software completely open-source (are you listening carriers?) and amenities like:

  • 8 MP Camera
  • Dual Pico projectors
  • embedded BT dongle/headset/presentation style mouse contraption
  • wireless charging
  • IR receiver/transmitter
  • A dock projects the screen and a virtual keyboard, along with a projected IR touchpad

Yes, prepare the smelling salts before you watch the concept video (after the break).  I can only see two three issues here -- all development on existing Android devices would grind to a screaming halt, carriers and open source aren't likely to mix very well, and I don't have one yet.  Hit the break to check out the videos, yes plural -- there's a 3D version too!
