Samsung Nexus S gets new Wifi, GPS antennas, shows them to the FCC

16

What would you do if you were a smartphone and your maker just gave you new Wifi and GPS antennas? Why, you'd show them to the Federal Communications Commission, of course. And that's just what's been done with the Samsung GT-i9020T, otherwise known as the yet-to-be-announced-but-seen-a-plenty Samsung Nexus S. That mean we're going to see the phone anytime soon? Your uneducated guess is a good as ours. [FCC via Engadget]

Sprint's LG Optimus S gets the custom ROM treatment [From the forums]

10

Sprint's latest Android device, the LG Optimus S, now has its own custom ROM from our very own forum moderators KSmithInNy and Beezy.  You might be familiar with their excellent work on the Evo 4G, and anyone who might have grabbed one of these snappy little phones should get to know them soon.

The ROM is a well optimized Froyo build based on the latest official version from LG, and has that dreaded carrier bloatware stripped out.  Not only did you pick up a solid little device for a great price, now you can run the pure Android experience on it.  Be sure to hit the Optimus S forums for everything you need to get rooted and run custom ROMS on your new Optimus S phone. [Android Central Forums] Thanks KSmithInNY and Beezy!

HTC Merge case shows up - but just like the phone, it's not yet available

5

No, the HTC Merge still hasn't been announced. But a Body Glove case for the HTC slider has been spotted, lending even more credence to the whispers that this Verizon phone has been delayed at least once. When will it drop? Your guess is as good as everybody else's at this point (and likely just as wrong). In the meantime, you'll have to continue to make do with our exclusive hands-on, benchmark tests and video preview. And that's not too shabby. One more pic after the break. [Droid Forums via Android Central Forums]

DROID gets lockscreen gestures via CyanogenMOD ROM --other devices soon to follow

8

Those of you out there who like to play around with custom ROMs may have already picked this tidbit of news up -- CyanogenMod releases will soon be getting a cool new lock screen gesture feature courtesy of mtwebster, with an OG Droid version being already available for download as an add on.

Gestures of course, will add the ability to "draw" out anything you wish onto your lock screen and upon doing so, be able to launch an application or activity that has been associated to that drawing. (Kind of like Google's own Gesture Search app.) A smiley face for Facebook maybe a T for Twitter; you all get the drift.  Pretty awesome! And likely something that should have been there from the get go on Android but alas, this why many of us love custom ROMs to begin with. [Twitter / CM Forums]

Xperia X8 Eclair update begins

3

Android 2.1 updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 have started to roll out, and no, SE didn't surprise anyone with Froyo.  Android 2.1-update 1 is rolling out in stages, based on the "SI-number" located on the label on the back of your phone.  Sony Ericsson has a list of all the SI-numbers that are being given the update now, and they will update that list accordingly.  See the source link for the list.

Interestingly, SE again mentions that software updates are not under their complete control:

...the final timing of when each kit comes is depending on different local and global approvals and therefore we don’t really have a detailed plan per kit but rather release them as soon as all needed approvals are in.

All manufacturers need carrier approval for their software, but it appears the Sony Ericsson really wants us to remember that.  If I can offer a suggestion -- stop shipping phones with Android 1.6 on them and you wont have to make so many excuses.  Just sayin'. [Sony Ericsson Product Blog] Thanks Sam!

Another Gingerbread build is spotted, this time it's GRH47B

13

Let the teasing continue: Christophe writes in again to say he's spotted another build of Android 2.3 Gingerbread that reportedly is pinging his app. This time it's GRH47B (the previous sighting was of GRH14B), with the full string being Dalvik/1.4.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3; Nexus One Build/GRH47B). Yeah, it's possible this is just a little trickery, but we doubt it. Now all we need is an actual build to leak out. Google, you know where to find us. [AIR Benchmark]

Rovio confirms Christmas edition of Angry Birds is on the way

16

The Twitter account for Rovio has been rather busy the past few days. OK, that's not true. They're actually busy every day, but even more so now that they've made mention of just how many Android users have downloaded Angry Birds (More than 7 million, in case you were wondering) but today's news is even more awesome.

Rovio has confirmed after some images appeared online that they are indeed planning on a Christmas edition of Angry Birds for release. When asked about Android getting stuff for Christmas and they advised that Android would indeed get in on some of the action as well. Angry Birds day is on Dec. 11, and a new release would fit in nicely for that day don't you all think – or maybe sooner?  [Ylex via @Roviomobile]
