Milestone, Xperia X-10 to get updates, says O2 Germany

0

O2 Germany says that the  Motorola Milestone and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will soon be getting updated ROMs.  Sorry, but the Milestone won't be getting Android 2.2/Froyo this time around, nor will the X10 be getting Android 2.1/Eclair -- they both are getting small maintenance releases.  Expect them within the next two weeks according to O2.

We've heard nada from Motorola or Sony Ericsson about this, and can only assume that the software will also be headed for other carriers if needed.  And even though it's not the update you might have been hoping for, it's nice to know the manufacturers haven't forgotten you.  [Twitter via TheUnwired.net]

LG planning 20 Android phones in next 6 months

13

HTC, Motorola, and Samsung are the three juggernauts of the Android phone world. So what’s the deal with LG? So far, they don’t have much to show for in the US, except the LG Ally. On top of that, their first-quarter smartphone profit sales have dropped 6.7 percent from last year. Since the Android market is starting to become insanely lucrative, they’ve decided to get serious and have released a statement saying that 20 LG Android powered devices will be rolled out before the end of the year. Now, it’s hard to say how many of those phones will make it to the US, but we should expect to see at least a few. [via Unwired View]

Update: It appears that LG's 20 new smartphones won't all be running Android.  Android Central commenter On2Vegas points us to a comment on a story at GigaOm from Ken Hong at LG Electronics in Seoul.  According to Ken no solid numbers for the Android platform as the "portfolio is still in flux".  Thanks On2Vegas!

AT&T HTC Intruder (or Liberty, or Aria) teased in testing video

13

(AT&T Android Product Manager Dante Martin)

We brought you the first picture of the AT&T HTC Liberty -- which may well be named the Intruder -- and now we can bring you a video teaser of the phone. It's clearly a small HTC phone running Sense, and it definitely lines up with the Liberty render we stripped out of the ROM, with the Evo-style buttons and Incredible-style trackpad. Can't tell too much otherwise, except that the microUSB port is on the bottom of the phone, and the phone itself appears to be pretty small, which could line up with the 320x480 screen resolution.

The video itself is pretty interesting, too -- check it out after the break -- showing how AT&T tests its phones long before they ever get into your hot little hands. And that they did so with an as-yet unannounced Android phone is very cool, too. Nicely done, AT&T. Thanks, Will!

Evo 4G screen scratch test isn't pretty to watch, but the result's not bad

25

When you see a phone along side a set of keys, a screw, a penny a razor blade, you know something bad's about to happen. Right? Roman G lets us know in the Android Central Forums about his scratch test on the Evo 4G (he was sending the phone back to Sprint for another physical problem anyway), and he definitely put it through its paces. Check out the video, after the break. [YouTube via Android Central Forums]

Evo 4G limited to 30 frames per second

21

Some of you have reported the Evo 4G to be a little choppy while scrolling through the menu, or swiping through the home screens, and it might just not be your imagination. Using an application called ‘fps2d’, Evo enthusiasts have discovered that there appears to be a 30-frames-per-second cap. That means that games and other graphic intensive applications may not be running to the best of their ability. Nobody’s really sure as to why this could be yet, but there was a similar issue with the Motorola Droid when it got its Eclair update. But you better believe your friendly neighborhood devs are quickly working to resolve this issue.  [code.google.com via XDA]

Motorola Droid 2 goes full frontal -- but it'll have Motoblur?

35

Recently the Motorola Droid 2 was seen for the first time in Verizon's system, and today it has decided it was ready to pose for the camera. It looks like the glimpse of the keyboard we had a little while back was right on point. At this point not a lot is known about the device, but Droid Life says it was seen running Android 2.1, will have 8GB of internal memory as well as an 8GB storage card, a 3.7-inch screen, the aforementioned updated keyboard and a beefed up 750MHz processor, which makes it seem like a decent -- though not revolutionary -- upgrade from the original.

But before you can say "why mess with success," this puppy reportedly is running a newer version of MotoBlur. Maybe it's the updated version like the Flipout, or maybe it's something else, along the lines of the rumored (but neither confirmed nor detailed) Ninja Blur. Peep some blurry video of it booting up after the break. [via DroidLife]

Evo 4G Wifi speed test -- you might be surprised by the results

37

So we've already taken a look at the strength of the Wifi signal on the Evo 4G. And that's important. You have to have a good connection to get anything done. But signal strength isn't everything. And so we re-ran our tests, this time measuring data speed. How did the Evo 4G compare? If the picture above is any indication, our results might surprise you.

Let's discuss, after the break.

Silver HTC Desire coming in the UK

3

If you're looking at an HTC Desire but aren't all that crazy about having yet another black slab laying around, UK retailer Expansys has you covered. A silver job will be available for a limited time, going for £449 unlocked. Of course, if you end up importing this thing to the U.S. you need to remember that you won't be getting U.S. 3G bands on it, which might take a bit of the shine away. [Expansys via Unwired View]
