HTC Sensation now available from Vodafone UK

24

The wait is finally over, at least for Vodafone customers in the UK. HTC's new dual-core flagship phone, the Sensation, is now available to purchase from Vodafone UK. Pre-orders made over the past few weeks should also start arriving from today. The Sensation is available for free from Vodafone on 24-month contracts of £35 or more per month. On shorter or cheaper contracts, you can expect to pay between £100 and £200 up-front for the phone.

The Sensation boasts the most impressive hardware and software of any HTC device to date -- there's the brand new HTC Sense 3.0, running on a 960x540 display, powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. And of course you'll be running Gingerbread out of the box, too. If you're planning on picking up the Sensation, or its American cousin the Sensation 4G, then be sure to check out our hands-on coverage from last month's HTC Roadshow.

How to stream Hulu on a hacked Nook Color

13

Have 11 minutes? Wanna get Hulu streaming on your hacked Nook Color (or another Android device)? Android Central Forums member Huskermaina -- who also brought us the excellent Netflix on a Nook Color video -- is back for more.

The gist of it is that you'll be loading a modified Flash Player as well as Dolphin Browser HD. A couple other settings tweaks, and you're streaming away! As often is the case with Hulu, however, it wouldn't surprise us in the least if this method ceases to work at some point. But for now, get to streaming! Full instructions are in the forums (hit the link below), and we've got the instructional video after the break, too.

How-to: Stream Hulu on the Nook Color

Android's Q1 2011 global sales hit 36 million, analyst reports

14

Another day, another chart showing Android's spectacular growth. What you see above is Gartner's numbers for the first quarter of 2011. And in those three months, some 36.2 million Android devices were sold worldwide, for a 36 percent share in the period. Second highest was Symbian, at 27.5 million, and iOS devices totaled 16.9 million devices. BlackBerry was at 13 million, and Microsoft (Windows Phone) a meager 3.6 million. HP's webOS was relegated to the "Other" category.

Compared to Gartner's Q1 2010 numbers, Android increased nearly 600 percent for total sales, and increased its global market share by 26 percentage points. Apple's iOS, on the other hand, doubled its unit sales but only increased its market share by 1.5 percentage points.

Overall, some 428 million mobile devices were sold in the first quarter of the year, up 19 percent from the same period a year ago.

  • Montgomery, Ala.
  • Pensacola, Fla.
  • Tallahassee, Fla.

Verizon's also increased the LTE footprint in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans and Philadelphia.

The rest of you, well -- no such luck unless you're making use of a 4G modem offered by Verizon. We're pretty sure Phil will be 4G drunk by mid-afternoon so we're counting on him to tell us the second it actually goes live.

Motorola Droid X2 now live on Verizon site

15

The Xperia Play isn't the only phone to go live on Verizon.com tonight, the Motorola Droid X2 has also appeared, ready to order.  $199.99 (with a new agreement) gets you Big Red's first dual-core phone, (Paging Mr. Bionic.  Please pick up the white courtesy phone), or if you prefer to buy things without getting tangled up in a contract it will set you back $449.99.

The DX2 is catching a lot of heat for not having an LTE radio, but for those who don't live or work in an area that will see any LTE love in the near future, it should make for a great phone.  It's all about the choices.

Xperia Play pre-order page live, ships May 25

8

After the messy launch of the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung Droid Charge, Verizon's launch of the Xperia Play looks to be right on track.  The pre-order page has gone live, and as announced the pricing is $199.99 with a contract and $449.99 if bought outright.  We also see that orders will ship out by May 25, so it looks like you gamer types can have your PlayStation Phone in your hands the same day they arrive in stores.

While it's not the dual-core monster many are waiting for, looking at Dieter's hands-on from Mobile World Congress we see that the gameplay looks butter smooth.  We also had a chance to fondle them at Google I/O earlier this month, and they are quite snappy performers.  We certainly wouldn't blame you if you picked up one of these beauties.  Join the discussion in the Xperia Play forums to make the wait a bit more tolerable!

Samsung Vibrant, Captivate, i9000 merged into CyanogenMod 7 tree

9

We've been seeing serious work on getting the GSM flavors of the Samsung Galaxy S line into the CyanogenMod 7 project for about three months, but now it's officially official -- the Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Captivate, and Samsung Galaxy S i9000 have been merged into the CM7 source tree.  Nightlies are currently building, and should be ready for you to test TDR's bandwidth very shortly.

Note that these aren't general release builds.  Nightly builds are prone to bugs, and best left for the advanced user.  If that's you, get ready to check the CyanogenMod mirror network for your version's build.
