Official and early Droid 2 hands-ons good to whet the appetite

14

The Motorola Droid 2 is less than 24 hours away, and Verizon's offering up an official hands-on video (re-uploaded by Engadget) to tease use these last few hours. Can't help but wonder if all the hands-on touchy-feely stuff was dig at Apple. Or maybe we're making that up. Who knows.

Either way, check it out after the break, along with an early hands-on from Droid Life. And everybody get ready for the madness to start tomorrow morning.

SwiftKey Keyboard gains speech-to-text

21

SwiftKey, one of our favorite keyboards, just added a much-wanted feature that many popular third-party keyboards lack: speech to text. The microphone gets a dedicated button in its familiar spot to the left of the space bar, but the implementation is slightly different from what most of us are used to.

Pressing it brings up a blank screen with the "Speak now" dialog rather than staying on the screen you're actually entering text on. While slightly jarring, this may be due to one other tweak--after speaking, a popup lets you select what you meant to say. Will this alleviate the frustration of the speech-to-text engine constantly misunderstanding you, or just add another step?

The app description now also promises the "full app out soon." Their beta release added a lot of polish compared to the alpha, so we may be in for a treat in the near future. Download link and another screenshot after the break

Official Galaxy S accessories look as awesome as the Android smartphones

16

We've got half of the Galaxy S line already in our fat little fingers -- that'd be the T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate -- and today Samsung announced some official accessories to go with them. (We'll forget, for the moment, that they're teasing us with the as-yet-unlaunched Verizon Fascinate.)

As you see above, there's a snazzy car dock that fits the lines of the entire Galaxy S series. And after the break, take a peep at the desktop dock with audio out, spare battery charger and leather case.

Samsung Captivate available from Amazon for only $49.99 with contract

20

If you've been looking to get the new Samsung Captivate from AT&T, be sure you check out Amazon's awesome deal first. Amazon is offering the 1GHz "Hummingbird" processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, and an all-new Touchwiz 3.0 user interface for a $49.99 with a new two year contract. AT&T is currently selling it for $199.99. Sounds like a steal to us. Check out our review of the Samsung Captivate before you scoop it up from Amazon though. [Amazon via Android Authority]

Android Quick App: Wordfeud Free

21

One of the many applications that I have been waiting to come to Android would be a replacement for Words with Friends, which is available on the iPhone and iPad. Wordfeud FREE is a great new Android application that allows you to play a Scrabble like game with either a friend or random opponent. Once you open the application you are asked for your email address, then asked to select a user name, which will allow friends to search for you to start a new game. Once you are all set up you can invite a user by user name or you can search for a random opponent, so even if none of your friends have Android devices, you can still take advantage of this great application.

Archos 32 hits FCC, gets caught on camera

6

The specs got leaked a while back, but now we finally have pictures of the Archos 32 tablet. The device seems to be packing dedicated directional buttons, which should help navigation on that 3.2 inch screen. It comes packed with 8GB of onboard storage and runs Android 2.1 ("Eclair"). The price may be the biggest selling point, as it will run you only $150. Sounds like a great Android-based alternative to the iPod Touch to me. Plus, it has a kickstand! Click past the break for a couple more pictures. [FCC via Engadget]

Early Tweetdeck build leaks out; we take it for a spin

14

We're still waiting for the official beta period to begin for the Tweetdeck Twitter client for Android. But in the meantime, a Version 1 build has leaked out. It's an early build, CEO Iain Dodsworth says (update: it's coming Thursday), so we're going to give Tweetdeck the benefit of the doubt and not post the file link. (It's found easily enough.) But we are, however, going to take it for a spin, with the understanding that some features might not be complete. So keep that in mind.

But let's take a look, after the break.

Sprint Evo 4G caught on camera on TNT's "The Closer"

12

It's pretty obvious to anyone who cares that Android is not only mainstream, but very much in the spotlight. If you need proof, just turn on your TV. We've already seen Ari and Johnny Drama with an N1 on "Entourage," and now Engadget has caught a sighting of the Evo 4G on TNT's "The Closer" videotaping a surgery. That 8MP camera along with 4G speeds is great for catching a crime in action and then sending it off to the authorities. That is, if you're not completely distracted by that Sprint logo... What's Google announcing tomorrow?

ZOMG, Google's going to announce ... something ... tomorrow at its campus in Mountain View, Calif. Question is, what? The invitation [via Giz] points to "unveiling a couple of cool new mobile features." Let's run down some of the ideas we've thrown around here in the office:

  • Gingerbread (Android 3.0): Very unlikely.
  • Some sort of interim version between Froyo and Gingerbread: Possible, but also not likely.
  • New Google apps, along the lines of Google Goggles or Maps: More than likely.
  • The Android Market web interface Google showed off at its IO dev conference in May: Geez, we hope so.
  • Music download and sync service: That'd be another "PLEASE LET IT HAPPEN!"
  • When your phone is schedule to get Froyo: Not gonna happen.

Have your own idea? Head into the forums and give us a shout.

Samsung Captivate is overclocked to 1.2 GHz; 1.6 GHz to come soon?

15

The AT&T Captivate (read our review) has been overclocked to 1.2 GHz, which makes the Hummingbird processor faster than it is out of the box, which is already pretty quick. The modder who successfully did this said that the processor is actually capable of a stable 1.6 GHz, so be on the lookout for that soon. If you have a Captivate and are interested in overclocking, click here. [Samsung Hub]
