Android will have second-largest market share by 2011, says Gartner

20

Gartner Inc., a leading information technology research company, is forecasting that Android OS will be #2 in market share by the end of 2010, only behind Symbian and will even challenge Symbian for the top spot in 2014. A year ago, Gartner predicted that Android would claim the #2 spot eventually, but not until 2012. The increase in popularity and manufacturer support has driven them to change this forecast.

Symbian still has a large share of the market due to its proliferation in mass markets. Android will be challenging them in those markets soon enough, according to Gartner:

"Gartner expects manufacturers such as Samsung to launch many new budget Android devices in 2H10 that will drive Android into mass market segments. Other players, such as Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola, will follow a similar strategy. This trend should help Android become the top OS in North America by the end of 2010."

This is a sign and example of Android's growth. Gartner, along with other research companies, had expected Android to gain considerable market share, but not for a couple years. The fact that they are now expecting it to claim the #2 spot by the end of this year showcases its popularity and adoption. [Gartner]

Android 2.1 now available for Rogers HTC Magic+

4

Canadian carrier Rogers has announced that the HTC Magic + (that's the name they have given their refresh of the venerable HTC Magic) is now receiving the Android 2.1 update via OTA. Yes, it happens to be the same 2.1 update they have been talking about since February of 2010.  Good things happen to those who wait.

To jumpstart the OTA process on your Magic +, head to menu, settings, about phone, system software updates and select to check now.  This will fire off a ping to the server, and if you're lucky, you get a tasty eclair dessert in return.  [@RogersMary]

T-Mobile starts the school year off with Kids Are Free promotion

6

Ahh, it's that time again here in the states. The leaves start changing colors, the sweatshirts come out of storage, and moms and dads everywhere are rejoicing as they pack their kids' lunches and send them back to the classrooms. Though, this also means kids need to be picked up from school too. With all the after school activities and practices going on these days, it's hard to keep up with them. The easy thing to do would be to get them a cell phone to stay in touch. Unless, that is, if you strike up a deal with the overnight custodians to keep your kids until the next morning. Wait, bad idea, that's probably illegal, right? So instead, why don't you add a line to your family plan for free with T-Mobile? Now there's a novel idea.

T-Mobile has announced their Kids Are Free promotion allows "new and existing T-Mobile customers who sign up for a qualifying family plan through Nov. 2, 2010, receive free add-a-line service on up to three lines of their plan until 2012." Wouldn't that be nice if little Sally could have the new Samsung Vibrant, or better yet, the newly announced G2. Heck, with one of the latest Android phones from T-Mobile, she might even end up being the most popular girl in her class. And you might land parent of the year award -- well, from little Sally that is. Unfortunately, there is no word on how old the little one has to be to qualify; we're assuming they need to be 17 and under. For more family friendly promotions and full press, be sure to make the jump. [Business Wire]

Samsung Fascinate rooted on Day 1

19

Well, that didn't take long, folks. (And nor did we think it would.) The Verizon Samsung Fascinate has been rooted. And that means it's just a matter of time before we see the thorn in many a side (aka Bing) stripped out and a more *cough* acceptable Google experience replaced on the latest vest of the Samsung Galaxy S. [XDA (2), SDX via Android Central Forums] Thanks, Dirrk!

Real HDMI app lets you take everything on your Droid X to the big screen

18

If that 4.3-inch screen on your Droid X (our review) isn't big enough to show off them cute pictures you took at Disney World to your grandma's weak eyes -- there was always another alternative. By using the micro HDMI (you can buy one here at Android Central Store) port on Droid X, owners have always had the ability to take their pictures and video to the big screen. Though, wouldn't it be great if you could display all of your apps, games, soundboards, etc on your TV too?

GmanApps, developer of the new Real HDMI app on Market, will now allow you to do just that. We're probably most excited to be able to play our favorite emulators on the big screen. Now, where is that Wii-remote? If you already have or gonna give this app a try, shout out in the comments section. Download links after the break.

Regarding the 'Verizon going exclusive with Bing' rumor

17

This is all we have to say about that: Verizon is not going exclusively with Bing for future Android smartphones, [via Business Insider and Engadget], contrary to an anonymously sourced story by The Droid Guy that inexplicably gained traction today. Also, the Google Search widget indeed is on the Samsung Fascinate, it just routes searches through Bing.
