Dell Streak may hit AT&T 'any day now'

5

The Samsung Captivate may not be the only major Android phone to hit AT&T this month. Engadget is speculating that the Dell Streak may hit stores "any day now." (Which is close to BGR's rumored July 19 date.) The speculation comes from the fact that new kiosks are being installed by contractors in a very secret manner.

The Dell Streak is a 5-inch phone/tablet hybrid that has been overseas for a little while now. While it is being released disappointingly with Android 1.6, Dell has confirmed that 2.2 is in the "near future." [Engadget]

We took the Log Me In Ignition VNC app for a spin a couple of months ago, and now it's available in the Android Market. Check out the video again after the break, where you'll also find download links. [Log Me In]

G2s on UK's T-Mobile are getting an OTA Android 2.1 update

8

T-Mobile UK's G2, which U.S. users might know as the HTC Hero, will be getting an over-the-air update to Android 2.1 ("Eclair") in the coming weeks. The G2 will join the Hero, which received 2.1 back in May.

For any G2 users who want to know what new hotness they will be receiving, our video walkthrough of Sense on the Evo 4G should be pretty close to what you will be getting. Highlights include : an updated Market, live wallpapers (might we suggest zombies?), and Google Maps Navigation. [T-Mobile UK via CoolSmartphone]

The Droid X booby-trap controversy

72

Locked, Encryption, and a self-destruct button -- all over a cellphone?  It's not very often that I'm asked to write something and don't really want to write it. But there's this 800-pound gorilla in the room.  Of course, I'm talking about the insane idea that a phone manufacturer would design a phone that self-destructs when you try to hack or mod it.  If we're to believe what we read here at My Droid World (and there's no reason not to), the Droid X is exactly that.  Join me after the jump, and we can talk a bit about exactly what might be going on and how it may affect this devices future.

Update: No sooner than we posted this did Droid modder Steven Bird brings up some good points. One is that no Droid X's have exploded just yet, and that an OMAP3 eFUSE isn't really a new phenomenon. It's likely there will be some major hurdles to overcome before we see custom ROMs on the Droid X, and it's just as likely that some very smart and talented people will be working on it. We still wish Android hardware would remain open, however, and that won't change. Thanks to everyone who sent this in. - Phil

AT&T sells a lucky reader a captivate already

16

Casey P just shot us an e-mail to let us know he was somehow able to wring a Samsung Captivate (see our hands-on) out of an AT&T store. The phone isn't officially supposed to go on sale until Sunday. So, any AT&T users out there who want to jump onto the Android bandwagon might want to try their luck at an AT&T store as well.

As a reminder to users on America's other GSM network, T-Mobile, the Samsung Vibrant is on sale today as well. [Big thanks to Casey P for the tip and photo!]

HP cans rumored Android tablet

12

Remember how HP has been working on tablets running several OS's? All Things Digital's John Paczkowski has gotten a tip that HP has decided to shelve (at least for the time being) a tablet running Android:

"Hewlett Packard is working on a variety of tablet PCs, running a variety of operating systems. Among them, an Android device that was supposed to arrive at market in the fourth quarter of 2010. But no longer. Sources in position to know tell me that HP’s Android slate has been delayed and won’t ship before the end of the year as planned."

HP is a huge company, but they do have limited resources. It is not too hard to imagine that they would want to dedicate their resources to  Windows Phone 7... phones while also "doubling down" on webOS for both tablets and printers

For anyone looking for an Android tablet, there are still options out there. The Dell Streak is running wild and Verizon is looking to offer an iPad competitor later this year as well. [All Things Digital

Qik extends free premium services through September

8

The folks over at Qik have announced that they will continue to allow the free use of premium services through the month of September.  They acknowledge their "rocky start" and in return are throwing all of us using the HTC Evo 4G a bone:

Heya Android Qikkers – with the launch of the new Android client and video chat capability on HTC EVO 4G, we announced premium services for Qik that will enable you to get much more from your everyday Qikking. With the announcement we had an offer to provide the premium services for free till July 15, 2010. We understand that we had a bit of a rocky start with the new and improved Qik and so as a small token of appreciation we are now extending the offer to enjoy Qik’s premium services for free till end of September.

Happy Qikking!

Seems that video chat and conferencing is turning out to be more popular here in the states than any of us expected.  Us Evo-ers took Qik out Qikkly last month, and the addition of a fruit flavored phone with a front camera brought Fring to it's knees.  Hopefully everyone involved can rebound, and we can all have fun seeing just how goofy we look again! Droid X now available online, in stores once they open

41

OK, you crazy kids. (We've been watching your countdown in the forums.) The Motorola Droid X is now officially available on Verizon's website. So order yours and go to bed. Or at least let us go to bed. You also should be able to get one in the morning at various brick-and-mortar locations. (We'll still be in bed, or possibly eating waffles.) And if you want, you can still enter to win one from us. For free. Just sayin'. [Verizon Wireless]

Album art live wallpaper shows how bad your musical taste is

16

Once again the developers at AndroidGamer have an awesome new Live Wallpaper to share with us.  You might remember their last jewel, Advanced Map Live Wallpaper, from when we had a look at it last month.  Well, Album Art live wallpaper is just as original!  The application scans your music, and pulls out the album art to create a collage of sorts as your wallpaper.  It's chock full of settings, and according to the developers the features include:

  • Variable cover size
  • Shuffle
  • Automatic refresh
  • Battery friendly
  • Smooth scrolling
  • LauncherPro support

We've been using it for a bit now and are having a tad of trouble getting it to recognize our collection of Hungarian folk tunes, so your mileage may vary.

You can get Album Art live wallpaper  on the Android Market for 99 cents, or there's a demo version for free! (Live wallpapers only work with Android 2.1 and higher!)

Like ton's of other apps, this one comes from the minds and hearts of the guys over at Xda-Developers, and you can check out the official support thread HERE.  Links and more pics after the break.  Thanks David!
