Body Glove ShockSuit Case for the HTC One (M8)

12
Body Glove ShockSuit for M8

If you work hard or play hard, you need a case that allows your HTC One M8 take an extra bump or two. Whether you are working out in the field with mother nature, in the shop with the dust and equipment everywhere, in a squad vehicle looking out for the public or anywhere where your phone is going to take some extra abuse, the Body Gloce ShockSuit case is going to keep your M8 safer. The case isn't waterproof (though it is MIL-STD-810G rated), but when facing the mud, or sparks from a welder, or the door frame on your service vehicle the ShockSuit case will save your M8 from a world of hate.

Like most other rugged cases, the ShockSuit is a two-piece design. You put your M8 into the front polycarbonate outer shell — be sure to read the supplied instructions to make this easier — which also has a thick plastic screen protector that fared well against my keys. Once the front is on, you slip the assembly into the thick rubber outer housing. Then, your M8 is ready when things get a little tough. The trade off is that it's not the easiest case in the world to put on or take off — but you knew that going in when you bought a rugged case. The screen is still responsive even with the protective cover, but you will lose that incredible sensitivity that the M8 seems to posses in it's touch sensor. But it's not bad. Again, a tradeoff for ruggedness.

Trident Aegis Case for the Samsung Galaxy S5

6
Trident Aegis Case for Samsung Galaxy S5

Next up in our parade of Galaxy S5 cases is the Trident Aegis Case. This is one of those two-for-one deals (three, really) that provides a lot of protection for your phone.

Start with the layer of shock-absorbing silicone — rubber, really — that fits around your phone. Presumably it'll help against dust and moisture, too, though the Galaxy S5 is already pretty good at that on its own thanks to its IP68 rating. On top of that rubber skin goes a hard plastic shell — let's just call it an exoskeleton, 'cause it sounds cooler — that not provides even more protection. Some of the rubber skin is exposed, giving you some nice grip points.

Motorola Solutions makes investment in Recon Instruments

0

Motorola Solutions invests in heads-up glasses start up Recon Instruments Motorola Solutions (no, not that Motorola — the other one) has given a bag of cash to heads-up glasses maker Recon Instruments. Recon, whose Recon Jet HUD glasses we've been looking forward to for some time, didn't disclose the amount of the investment, but that it was enough to warrant a press release tells us it was at least marginally substantial to their bottom line. The investment will be "used to accelerate product development and to ramp up global marketing and distribution."

The Zens Qi USB wireless charging pad

37

OK, OK. Wireless charging isn't really wireless charging. At some point you have to actually plug it into something. We get that. And the Zens Qi USB wireless charger — as you might have guessed — does things just a little differently. It's powered by a USB port.

Cruzerlite Bugdroid Circuit case for Galaxy S5

5
Cruzerlite Bugdroid Circuit Case for Samsung Galaxy S5

How can you not love the Cruzerlite Bugdroid Circuit Case for the Samsung Galaxy S5? Take one part simple TPU case — great for taking the brunt of the occasional bump and fall, as well as standing between your phone and anything that's trying to scratch it — and one part awesome Bugdroid graphics, and that's what you've got here. Just simple, easy protection for your Galaxy S5.

There's not much more to it than that. There are cutouts for all the places you need access to — the camera and heart-rate sensor, speaker, buttons, microphones and the like. You get a little bit of extra grip thanks to the fit and finish of the case. It's easy to put on, but not so easy that you have to worry about it falling off or anything.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 S-View Flip Case

27
Samsung Galaxy S5 S-View Flip Case

It's expensive, but highly functional — so long as you can keep the window clean

The Samsung Galaxy S5 S-View Flip Case is an expensive way to protect your phone. But, damn, does it ever look nice. We first got a glimpse of this guy at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and it's now available for purchase, along with the phone.

For the newcomers out there, this is a case that replaces the back cover of your Galaxy S5. It has the same rubber gasket as the stock back, so you retain the IP67 rating for dust and moisture — an important thing to look for with any Galaxy S5 accessory, but admittedly less of a concern with Samsung's own products. The inside of the back cover is nearly identical to the back it's replacing. But the external look and feel are completely changed, replaced by a leather-like cover. It looks great. It feels great. (And if you're like us and putting a black cover on a white phone, the contrast is quite striking.)

The design of this case can't be understated.

The HTC One M8 Flip Case

23
HTC One M8 Flip Case

Next up on our tour of HTC One M8 cases — we've already taken a look at the extremely popular Dot View case and HTC's TPU case — is HTC's Flip Case. This is a more traditional endeavor. No crazy 8-bit dots. No quick-peek windows.

And so what you get here is a pretty straightforward matter. Plastic shell on the back. Rigid cover for the front, with cutouts for the BoomSound speakers (which, by the way, work just fine with the flap closed, including during a phone call). Cutouts for the DuoCamera setup, flash and secondary microphone. Plenty of room to get to the microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and the power button and IR port up top.

Put simply, this is a no-frills, high-function (and not bad-looking) flip case.

Quick look: HTC's official TPU case for the HTC One M8

54
HTC One M8 TPU case

Some regions of the world get al little extra from HTC along with their HTC One M8 — a TPU case. And here's a very quick look at it.

Nothing spectacular here. Just your basic TPU case that wraps around the back and sides of the phone. It keeps the display lifted off of flat surfaces, the better to protect it. Cutouts are there for the cameras and microphones, and there's a little flap to seal up the microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The HTC logo gets highlighted thanks to a little design work on the case as well.

This isn't the most flashy of HTC One M8 accessories — that prize still goes to the Dot View case. But if you're lucky enough to have gotten one of these guys in the box with your phone, it's worth taking a look at, if only for the additional grip it provides to an otherwise sleek (and slick) phone.

Seidio Ledger Flip Case for Nexus 5

8
Seidio Ledger flip case for Nexus 5

Extra protection and functionality for your Nexus 5, as long as the extra bulk is worth it for you

I'm not sure when it happened, but there's a renewed sense of value in having a larger smartphone case that can provide more than simple coverage for the sides and back of the device. It's no longer unusual to have a flip-over folio style case for a phone (a function usually reserved for tablets), and with those screen covers also integrating slots of credit cards, IDs and business cards just like your wallet normally would.

Seidio has adapted one of its great hard plastic kickstand case designs to also include a folio-style flip cover for the front of your Nexus 5. And while the design ideas can seem a little disjointed at times on the Seidio Ledger Flip Case, it provides a different look and feel than you'll find on your standard case choices. Read along with us and see the merits of this functional Nexus 5 case.

Amazon Fire TV review

93
Amazon Fire TV and Fire Game Controller

Fire TV is possibly the best single set-top box available, but it still can’t be everything to everyone

In what has been colloquially called the "battle for the living room" (or as I like to call it, the battle for your HDMI inputs), competition is heating up but hasn't exactly hit a flash point. Modern products in the small set top box space like the WD TV Live, Boxee Box and Google TV never really caught on, and even the "big" successful players like Roku and Apple TV have relatively small sales numbers in the grand scheme of television watchers today. Whether it's out of complication from yet another box, the inherent redundancy of having several boxes that all do most of the same things or the price of more hardware and subscription services, these little set top boxes have yet to break though.

But if there's one thing Amazon knows how to do, it's create products that can find mass appeal with the general consumer. With the announcement of its new set-top box, Fire TV, Amazon is betting that it can get a good number of people to buy this $99 thing, and pay another $99 per year to deliver more Amazon content to it. And then pay still more for premium movies and TV shows and apps that aren't free as part of Prime. Building on the experience of launching the relatively successful Kindle Fire line of tablets, there's indication that Amazon can do just that. The real question is: has Amazon figured out something that Roku and Apple have not?

In this ever-hyped fight for a foothold in the living room, is Amazon's Fire TV offering a sure-fire hit? Read along with us and see what this little box can do.

Speck CandyShell and Candy Shell Grip for the Galaxy S5

6
Speck CandyShell Grip case for Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is upon us, and we're starting to take our first look at some third-party cases. Up first are the Speck CandyShell and CandyShell Grip cases. They're similar in form, function and design, with the Grip case adding, well, grip. Both cases sport a glossy finish to them. That in and of itself tends to be just a wee bit slick, but the matte edging — and the grip on the grip case, which is made of the same material — helps you keep a hold on the edges.

It's simple enough to get the Galaxy S5 into the case — just slip it in there, making sure you've got all the edges properly seated. You don't have to remove the phone's battery door or anything, which is nice.
