Last-minute stocking stuffer: ZOMM Wireless Leash

12

Here's a fun little last-minute gift for an Android-lover who's always leaving their phone laying around. The ZOMM Wireless Leash, as the name suggests, is a slick little way to help make sure your phone stays nearby.

The ZOMM connects to your phone via Bluetooth. You then register it online and connect to the ZOMM desktop software, which lets you update the firmware and adjust settings, like how far away the puck has to get before it triggers an alarm. And that, in a nutshell, is that. If the puck is separated from the phone, it starts with a little buzz. And then a beep, letting you know that you've got the puck, but not the phone.

The ZOMM also serves as a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone, and has one-touch emergency dialing to 911 and serves as a panic alarm.

Connecting the ZOMM to our phone was easy enough -- standard (awful) Bluetooth procedure. And it worked as advertised. Walk too far away, and the alarm sounds. The speakerphone, unsurprisingly, isn't all that great. And frankly if we're that close to the phone, we're just going to use the phone's speakerphone. But the easy 911 access is great, especially if you're using the included keychain with the ZOMM. Very handy.

The ZOMM isn't a "find my phone" tool -- it's more of a "hey, don't forget that" tool. It's still up to you to know where your phone is -- or to find it if you don't. But it's pretty darn handy. And while it's not cheap, neither does it break the bank at around $75. Check out ZOMM's promo video after the break.

Video walkthrough of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus navigation vehicle mount and spare battery charger

39

Youtube link for mobile viewing

What we have here is an excellent video walkthrough of a couple of Verizon Galaxy Nexus accessories that should be available in the morning -- the navigation vehicle mount and the spare battery charging kit -- from forums member Aatrek.

Note it's a "Navigation vehicle mount" and not a "Car dock" or anything. It's a hunk of plastic that the phone sits in, that's all. No contact charging, no Bluetooth audio. In other words, it does not bring, as the kids say, the sex. The spare battery charger, on the other hand, chargers a spare battery. No muss, no fuss.

Original Lapdock for the Motorola Atrix now available from AT&T for only $50 [update -- it's back to $100]

28

Back when the Motorola Atrix was released, the $399 Lapdock accessory was also introduced to make use of the webtop features the Atrix brought along with it. But it came in at $399 and while it eventually came down from there, many folks simply weren't interested in it.

But, if you always wanted one but never didn't want to fork over a lot of cash for it -- AT&T will sell you one now on the cheap. $50 cheap in fact, making that a savings of $350 when all is said and done. Plus, with a few mods here and there -- you can get it to work with other devices.

Update: As pointed out in the comments below, AT&T has changed the online price back to $100.  Still a much better price than the original $399, but double the 50 dollar fire-sale style price it was listed at earlier today.  You certainly have be quick on these type of deals!

Sphero makes a spooky cameo in FX's American Horror Story

3

If you're looking for a unique gift this holiday season for the tech geeks on your list, and our seal of approval wasn't enough to open your wallet, this might do it: Sphero, the robotic ball controlled by your Android device, made a cameo on the silver screen last week, appearing in American Horror Story, my pick for the best show on television right now. Keep in mind that Sphero doesn't always act as ominously as it does in the Harmons' haunted house; rather, it uses your device's bluetooth connection to move as you direct it to, with built-in apps allowing you to play golf, drive, and even take photos remotely. Hit the source link below to check out the clip (if you're not too scared), and if you've got $129 to spend on a remote control ball, preorders are open now, with delivery in time for Christmas.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus accessories (with pricing) pictured [from the forums]

29

Jephanie, a smart member here at AC bought a couple Galaxy Nexus accessories from his Verizon store, and was kind enough to share the pictures and pricing with us all.  The "Power and protection package" consists of a black case and holster, a universal car charger with USB slot, and three screen protectors for $49.97.  The "Spare battery charging kit" (and this one looks to be a real winner) has a spare 1850mAh battery, a stand-alone battery charger, and a micro-USB Y-cable so you can charge both the spare battery and your Galaxy Nexus at the same time in the same place.  List price on the spare battery kit is $39.99.  Both of these look like very nice accessories for the LTE Galaxy Nexus, and jephanie is ready to roll as soon as Verizon turns this one loose.  Hit the break for another picture of each, and visit the link below for close-ups and discussion.  Be sure to give jephanie a big thanks for sharing with us all!
