Top Android device, accessory, and app deals for October 22

7

Anybody shopping for Android apps, accessories, smartphones, or tablets will want to take a skim through these sales we've scrounged up from around the web. Every day, we comb through these sales to make sure they're fresh and accurate, and try to find a few more. Latest additions will be at the top of each list. For apps, Google Play stuff is at the top, and Amazon App Store sales are at the bottom.

As always, if you find any sales out out there that aren't listed, let us know in the comments!

Android 5.0 Lollipop basics: How to turn on the developer settings

12

This is one of those really basic things for most folks here. We get that. But it's worth a reminder for those new to Android (hi, new folks!), and new to Android 5.0 Lollipop. And so it deserves a quick minute of our time.

Android 5.0 basicsMost of what you'll see in the Lollipop developer settings (at least as of the updated preview) is the same as what you'll find in KitKat. Go to Settings>About phone and hit the build number 7 times to unlock things. And most of us won't need to go anywhere near most of the options. (USB debugging really is the only one I ever need to touch.) It is worth noting, however, that you won't find an option to either use the Dalvik or experimental ART runtime. That's because (and, again, those of you in the back of the class should know this already) the new Android Runtime is the default in Android 5.0, and it's been built to run apps compiled for Dalvik as well. This is a good thing.

You'll find some new media options for an experimental HTML5 player and USB audio, some Wifi tweaks, and a few other things that frankly I have no business mucking about with.

Hack responsibly, folks.

Nexus 4 Lollipop

Leaked firmware reveals new Gmail, Calendar and Messenger apps, along with a few surprises ...

The most recent Android 5.0 developer preview gave is a pretty good idea of what to expect from Lollipop when it officially launches. But not every feature from the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 can be found in the current developer build, and what's more the updated Material Design Google apps are also MIA.

In recent days, however, a new custom ROM ported from the Nexus 6 has shed some light on Lollipop in a more final form, complete with new Google apps, an updated Messenger app, the long-awaited Google Fit app and a handful of other surprises.

Read on for a closer look.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 video walkthrough

7

We got a quick first look at the new Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 a couple of weeks back at the grand launch event in London. Press launches are never, ever, the best place to get to know a new device properly so we've got one in for review to spend some quality time with it. We've got the 10-inch version here, so no projector to play with, but that and the QHD display aside it's pretty much identical to the bigger Yoga 2 Pro.

So it's time to break it out and take a closer look.
