Motorola posts full Xoom specs, GSM and WiFi-only versions confirmed

32

With the Xoom's impending launch, Motorola has seen fit to post full technical specs up for the world to see. There aren't really any surprises here other than confirmation of a GSM version but no word on where or when we might see it. And yes, the WiFi-only and GSM versions are exactly the same as the CDMA one except for the radio. If you have a pressing need to find out just how many OpenGL extensions the Xoom supports (no, we aren't kidding), head on past the read link. [Motorola via Engadget, Motodev Forums]

Motorola announces European Xoom retail plans

12

Motorola Mobility has announced its European retail arrangements for the upcoming Xoom tablet.

According to Moto's press release, the Xoom will arrive on European shores in the second quarter of 2011. In the UK, the Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy will stock the 3G/WiFi version, while the WiFi-only Xoom will be available at PC World and Currys. Elsewhere, Motorola says that T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom will introduce the Xoom in "selected markets".

No prices were mentioned, but the Xoom was recently given a price of $799 for 3G/WiFi and $600 for WiFi-only in the US. Inflated European prices are pretty much par for the course when it comes to consumer electronics though, so we'd expect the Xoom to retail for more than exchange rates would suggest. [Motorola Media Center]

Atrix 4G release date pushed up to Feb 22 [confirmed]

23

We have to file this as a rumor, but we just got word from a tipster (who also provided us the image you see) that the Motorola Atrix 4G's release date is confirmed for Feb 22.  We previously reported that it would be available on March 6 or earlier, and we're glad to see it turned out to be earlier this time :)

Nothing price related was reported as changed, so expect to fork over $199 after rebates and contracts.  If you're still on the fence, check out our hands-on with what may just be Android's new king of the hill.  Thanks anon!

Update - Confirmed, AT&T will have pre-ordered devices shipped on Feb 21 while everyone else can grab one on Feb 22. See a copy of the emails AT&T has been sending out after the break.

Official Google Reader app updated, adds widgets

17

Google has updated the official Google Reader app to version 0.9.2, adding two new homescreen widgets, a "mark previous as read" button and Russian translations.

The new button on the reading list allows you to mark anything above the current screen as read, saving precious time, energy and finger strain. The "news ticker" widget allows you to bring a selection of items to your home screen in a similar way to the stock News and Weather app, while the "unread items" widget creates a shortcut to a particular feed, label or person with the number of unread items shown next to it.

Market links and a QR code can be found after the jump. [Google Mobile blog]

Plex Media Center app now available in the Android Market

5

Previously only available to iOS devices, the popular media server application Plex is now coming to Android as noted in a press release from Plex today.  As it is now, a lot of Plex remote control apps already exist in the Android Market but having a dedicated app built by the originators is almost always going to be better in most cases. However, this isn't one of those cases. While the Plex app will allow you to stream items from your Mac or PC to your device over WiFi, or 3G it does not allow for you to remotely control those said files. Plex is building it into the next release but it's not there as of yet.

One other component missing from this release is the optimization for Tablets but that will come in due time. One awesome thing about Plex is their plug-in support as well. As the Android app gains popularity, we'll begin to see plug-ins created for a number of services. For example as it is now, the Mac and PC versions can tap into Netflix, Hulu and even direct web content to offer it all to you on your mobile device. Keep in mind though, Plex does cost $4.99 in the Android Market, which might be a turn off for some. You can hit the break for the download or head on over to the source link for more details. Gallo, Sterling, Opus One and Silver Oak Android tablets on Dell's leaked roadmap [Exclusive]

11

Dell's tablet roadmap has been leaked by a very reliable tipster along with Dell Android Smartphones and Dell Windows Phones, and it appears that there are four new Android tablets in the works.  According to the roadmap, we should expect the Dell Gallo, a Honeycomb tablet, sometime around April of this year. That will be followed by the Dell Sterling, running Honeycomb in Q4.  We also have the Dell Opus One and Dell Silver Oak (best name ever!) for sometime in Q1 of 2012.  The roadmap makes mention that these 2012 tablets will be running Honeycomb as well, but we wouldn't be surprised if that ends up changing. True hardcore tablet lovers will note that the Gallo is set to receive a "Handwriting" update in Q4, while the Streak 7 may get an update in Q3.

Heck, it's out our bag, but Dell also has Windows 7 tablets planned under the codenames Rosemount and Peju.

We'll be very interested to see what Dell brings to the table with these four Android tablets, and as soon as we know more you can read it here.

Be sure to check out the Dell 2011 Android Smartphones and the Dell 2011 Windows Phone roadmap!

Dell Hancock and Millenium Android smartphones in leaked 2011 roadmap

12

Our sister site WPCentral got hold of Dell's leaked roadmap for smartphones, and the Android news looks awesome.

According to the leaked slides, in September we should be seeing the Dell Hancock, a dual-core and dual-camera beast running (wait for it) Ice Cream on a 4 inch qHD 960x640 display with an 8mp rear camera and 1.3mp front camera. That rear camera shoots 1080p video, by the by.

Not to be outdone, the Dell Millenium follows in Q4 with a 4.3 inch screen, qHD 960x540 resolution,  and DLNA support on top of dual-core Ice Cream goodness. Another 8mp shooter (with 1080p video) appears on the back of this with a VGA front camera.

We're sure that we will see more phones like these as time goes by, but it's a bit of a rush to see it this early in the game.  There's also a couple of WP7 handsets in the leaked roadmap which look really interesting, so be sure to hit WPCentral for more news about them.

Be sure to check out the Dell 2011 Tablets and the Dell 2011 Windows Phone leak!

Thanks Anonymous!
