HTC Evo Shift 4G gets pictured

78

Well, what do we have here? After hearing bits and pieces about the Sprint-bound HTC EVO Shift 4G from various sources -- including seeing the ROM, a case and the phone in Sprint's inventory system -- we finally have a picture of the device formerly known as the "HTC Knight" with its keyboard open. By all indications the device is pretty much a Sprint 4G version of the G2/Desire Z/Merge. The picture seems to confirm the rumor that the phone will not have video-calling, as a front-facing camera seems to be absent. (And know that this guy's wearing a hard-shell case in the picture -- it's not actually that thick.)

Still, this should be a great phone for Sprint users whenever the carrier decides to launch it. Hop on over to the Android Central Forums to discuss the phone to your hearts content! [SprintUsers] Thanks to r0fl for the tip!

Hands-on with the new Android Market application

115

The new look to the Android Market will be rolling out over the next couple of weeks. But if you just can't wait, you can download and install it now. We've done so and have taken it for a test ride.

Graphically, things are much improved, trading the tabs for one long page. Comments, related items, screen shots and all the usual fodder is there on that one page.

The home screen and categories have carousels at the top -- you can flip through them to see promoted applications. It's quick and rather nice.

Installing an app is the same process, but much more aesthetically pleasing. When you press the install button, it then shows you the system and security components that the app can access. That's not new, but it's much more friendly, and we're hoping that casual users will actually pay attention to them now. You then press "OK" to actually install the app. Again, not new, but nicely refined.

Purchasing an app is exactly the same process as before. You make the deal, get a receipt e-mailed to you, and the app is installed. Refunding is seamless -- just open the app in the Market and press "refund." Careful of the 15-minute time limit, though.

We've got a brief video walkthrough after the break. Check it out. [Download the apk at XDA DevelopersThanks to everyone who sent this in!

Tegra 2 packing LG Star gives other phones an 'inferiority complex'

23

The LG Star is a device we have seen pop up a few times in recent weeks, but Engadget has gotten their hands on a prototype unit and put up a preview. Here are a couple highlights:

  • The style of the phone reminded them of the Droid Incredible
  • The 4-inch 800x480 panel is "gorgeous"
  • Running Froyo but expected to launch with Ginerbread
  • Tegra 2 processor. And speaking of CPU power...
  • Benchmarks are fast. As in crazy fast. As in a Quadrant score about 2x that of the Nexus 1 and 67 fps on Neocore. And this not on final hardware/software. Wow
  • Youtube HQ and Flash playback went off "without a hitch"

So yes, I want one. LG will be at CES, which we will be covering extensively, so expect a lot more on this device come January. And if this is a hint of things to come from Nvidia's Tegra 2 chips, we are about to see a huge increase in the computing power of mobile devices. Click past the link for more pictures and a pair of videos. [Engadget

Android Market update shrinks app refund window to 15 minutes

154

Google tonight announced that the Android Market is getting a significant upgrade over the next couple of weeks. All devices on Android 1.6 and  up -- and that's about 94 percent of all Android devices -- will get the update.

First and foremost, you'll see a carousel of promoted apps on the home and category screens. Widgets and Live wallpapers will get their own categories. The aforementioned app content ratings will go live on devices, and you'll get all of an app's information on a single page, instead of on several tabs.

Also: There will be better filtering for devices -- if your phone can't handle the app, it won't see it, basically.

Now here's the biggy: Currently, you have 24 hours to uninstall a paid app and get your money back. But Google says most apps are refunded within 15 minutes, and so that's what the new window will be. Repeat: You have 15 minutes to try an app and uninstall it for a refund, instead of 24 hours.

So fair warning, folks. You can still purchase an app on a trial basis, it's just that you've got a quarter-hour to check out the goods. Look for the Market update soon. And in the meantime, reader Adam somehow got it on his Droid X as it updated to Android 2.2.1. More pics of the new Market are after the break. [Android Developers Blog]

The Google Nexus S shows off the new Maps app

17

We saw Andy Rubin showing off the new Google Maps application on the mystery Motorola Honeycomb tablet on Monday, now we get to see Google showing it off on the upcoming Nexus S.  While it's a render, the 3D buildings and smooth scrolling look great, and it's something we're all looking forward to getting our hands on.

And let's be honest, the way the video was embedded into a frame of Nexus S goodness, well that's just plain cool.  Be sure to hit the source link and see for yourself, and we have the video itself after the break. [Google]

Looks like the HTC A7373 may be on its way to Sprint in early January. Don't know what the HTC A7373 is? Yeah, us either. A quick Google search pops up the Desire Z, and specifically a Russian version of the horizontal slider. That mean one's destined for Sprint? And might it be blessed with Wimax? News at 11, folks.
