Motorola Xoom $1199 at Best Buy? Probably not (at least we hope not)

117

On the list of things I don't worry about, pre-launch pricing at Best Buy is one of them. Anyone who's anyone knows full well that they're usually set sky high as a placeholder and then change once the device is released. We'll certainly hedge, however, in light of the other pricing leaks we've seen on the Motorola Xoom and say that anything's possible. But we're not freaking out just yet. AT&T off contract price for the HTC Inspire 4G only $399.99

34

If you've been holding out for the monstrous HTC Inspire 4G on AT&T then you can now head on over to their website and place your order. Although, Costco and various other places have been selling the device for a few days now this is the first time you've been able to order it up direct from AT&T. That said; if 2-year $99.99 contract price is not really to your liking you may want to look at the no-contract pricing for the Inspire 4G. AT&T currently has it listed for only $399.99 and that's one hell of a deal if you ask us. Hop on into the forums and share the joy with others. [AT&T]

AT&T to offer Open Feint Game Channel for Android

3

AT&T and Open Feint announced at CES that they would be partnering, and offered up a SDK for interested developers.  Now they have announced the details of what they were cooking up, and present the Open Feint Game Channel for Android.  Open Feint games are already popular among Android users, and the cross-platform game network has over 15,000 application developers using the service.  With the Open Feint Game Channel, AT&T hopes to bring an enhanced experience to their customers and offers tools to help draw new developers to the service.  Apple's Game Center is a lofty target, but AT&T makes it clear they have it in their sights.  It's nice to see AT&T showing a commitment to Android -- too bad it took losing iPhone exclusivity to make it happen.  Read the full press release after the break.

Thunderbolt gets root and NAND access

24

While we have all been busy speculating when the HTC Thunderbolt will be launched (dare we say the 24th), the folks over at XDA have been busy achieving root access. Well, they did just that. What we have here is a pre-production Thunderbolt (Mecha) which has successfully been rooted, its internal memory successfully broken into, with Clockwork Recovery installed.

Keep in mind that because it's a pre-production unit, it's entirely possible that it's possible likely that there may be some changes, thus affecting the entire process. But it's a step in the right direction. Now, is it the 24th yet? One more picture after the break. Also be sure to check out the Andirc channel. [XDA via the Android Central Forums

Android quick-app: Big Camera Button

28

If you ever take a self-pic with your smartphone -- stick the camera in your hand, extend your arm, point it at your melon and hope for the best -- you know how it can be a bit of a crapshoot. And unless you have a physical camera button, the tiny shutter buttons on the screen don't help matters any.

Enter Big Camera Button. It does exactly what you see. Press the shutter button once, and your screen changes to a Big Camera Button. No more hoping you hit the right spot. It's stupidly simply, and makes self-pics a breeze.

There's a free "lite" version, and a 99-cent version. Download links and a slightly NSFW video of it in action are after the break.

Australian Nexus S left without Super AMOLED display

15

Bad news for anyone in Australia considering picking up the Nexus S when it's released on Vodafone over there. It looks like the Aussie version of the device will be missing the Super AMOLED display found on other Nexus S models, instead replacing it with a Super LCD screen.

Vodafone announced earlier this week that it'd be carrying the Nexus S in 24 countries, though right now it's unknown whether any other territories will have to settle for an AMOLED-less Nexus S. The fact that the Super AMOLED model appeared on a Vodafone Germany preview site suggests that the situation may well vary from country to country, in line with rumors floating around towards the end of 2010. [Vodafone]
