Mysterious Android Powered MID Spotted, Looks Like The iPhone

2

We know next to nothing about this Android-powered MID (pictured above) other than the fact that we wouldn't mind using one and that it looks exactly like an iPhone, right down to the black border and chrome trim. The MID also looks to include SD card expansion, a couple of buttons, and maybe even phone capabilities. Yeah, vague, we know.

Overall, we're going to keep an eye on this completely unknown device because as much as an Android tablet is noteworthy, an iPhone-look-a-like Android tablet is even better.

What do you guys think? Straight rip off? Interesting?

HTC Sense Coming to HTC Magic, Not T-Mobile myTouch 3G

5

Hooray! HTC Magic users will be glad to know that they'll be able to upgrade their devices to HTC Sense, the sexy, wonderful UI that have people going gaga over on the HTC Hero. If you've forgotten how lovely HTC Sense is, feel free to check out our coverage on what we feel is a major step forward for Android.

One bad thing though, this bit of news doesn't apply to T-Mobile myTouch 3G users. Due to licensing issues, the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and other Magics with the "with Google" branding won't be able to officially upgrade to HTC Sense. We're not exactly sure how the legalities work but it probably has to do with Google and T-Mobile not wanting non-Google/T-Mobile approved software floating around on their handets. Lame. There's always the good folks at xda for you though...

But if you've got yourself a HTC Magic without Google branding, count yourself as one of the lucky ones. You'll be able to rock your device like the forthcoming HTC Hero. Kudos to you all.

Dell Mini 3i Pictured in Real Life

0

There you have it. A picture of the Dell Mini 3i aka dellphone in real, breathing life. Look at that polish! Look at that glare! Getting excited? Don't. Your hopes for a high-end device will be crushed when you realize that the first ever dellphone, though beautiful and runs Android, lacks WiFi and 3G. Why? Well, because China seems to have a rule that all cellphones must suck in order to gain approval.

So though these pictures show off Dell's first smartphone, our excitement has been definitely dampened by the fact that it's handcuffed by China's strict standards and that we're not even getting a sniff of it. Sigh. What can you do. At least the device is real.

Is the T-Mobile Pulse Actually an Android Phone Made by Huawei ?

1

The T-Mobile Pulse just received its Wi-Fi certificate, why is that important? Well, because the Pulse is actually the Huawei 8220, why is that important? Because the Huawei 8230 was once announced to be an Android phone. 8220, 8230--see the similarities?

So if we take a tiny leap of faith, this Huawei 8220 may be code-numbered for a specific region, with the other 8230 designated for another region. We were very excited about the Huawei 8230 because it just oozed polish and quality. And so far, the specs of the 8220 seem like a good enough start to maintain our excitement--3.5 inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3MP camera, etc. Sounds good on T-Mobile, right?

If you haven't heard of Huawei before, don't worry, it's not because they're some two-bit company. Huawei is like HTC before you knew who HTC was. We'll continue to keep an eye out for the T-Mobile Pulse/Huawei 8220/8230 because more Android phones is always a good thing.

Samsung Galaxy I7500 Coming to O2 UK This Week?

4

The Samsung Galaxy is reportedly slated for release in the UK this week, kind of. Reports have shown that O2's retail staff have found the Samsung Galaxy, Samsung's first Android phone, in their inventory system and that shipments will arrive this week. Though this doesn't necessarily mean that the Galaxy will be immediately available to customers, it shouldn't be too far off in the future.

O2 representatives have stated that the handset will launch in the next few weeks and our own report has expected an August release date for months now so we believe that this rumor of a Samsung Galaxy launch on O2 carries some weight. Though the Samsung Galaxy has taken a back seat to the HTC Hero, Sony 'Rachael' and others in our eyes, we're definitely excited to see it back in the spotlight and hopeful for its success.

Any UK'ers out there going to buy a Galaxy?

Pictures of Android Powered Dell Ophone mini 3i Pop Up

3

We've already reported on Dell's upcoming Android smartphone launch in China and expressed our disappointment in it not being available to the US market on launch. At that point, we didn't know what the dellphone was going to look like nor did we know any specifics on it. That's changed now, Dell's Android Ophone mini 3i has finally got a face, and its face looks pretty good.

The purported specs are as follows:

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE class 12
  • 103g grams weight
  • 58 x 122 x 11.7mm
  • 3.5″ nHD 640×360 LCD, 18-bit, 262K colors
  • Microsoft Exchange support
  • Google, AIM, Yahoo and MSN IM support
  • 3 megapixel auto-focus, flash, 8x digital zoom camera with 30fps video shooting mode, built in photo editor
  • USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, A-GPS
  • On-screen QWERTY keyboard, hardwriting recognition, multi touch UI
  • MicroSD slot

The Dell mini 3i is supposedly 'launch ready' which corroborates with our previous report. If you live in China, you should expect this device sooner rather than later. Yeah, so why couldn't this have launched in America with US 3G?

Anyone interested in Dell's Android phone?

Multi-Touch Coming to Android in 2.0, Eclair ?

10

One feature that has been conspicuously missing in Android since its launch has been a biggie--multi-touch. Multi-touch is the wonderful input method that reads multiple touch inputs at once. It gives for a more 'natural' control of input, instead of zooming in/out by tapping plus/minus signs, you can simply pinch or pull the screen. We've said it before but: Multitouch has become the benchmark for touchscreen browsing. The iPhone has it, the Pre has it, Android should definitely have it by now.

Luckily, CNET reports that official multi-touch support will be coming to the Android 2.0 update, which is expected to release this holiday season. Having multi-touch in Android is necessary not because of just its improvement to the user experience but it will take away a bullet point from its competitors. And to clarify, Eclair, not Donut, is expected to be 2.0.

Excited for the multi-touch news?

How To Root the T-Mobile myTouch 3G

13

The T-Mobile myTouch 3G has been rooted. The wonderful folks of XDA developers have already hacked the myTouch 3G and were even thoughtful enough to provide detailed instructions on how to gain root yourself!

As with all rooting methods, if done incorrectly it may brick your device, so please tread carefully when following the instructions. Rooting a phone can be beneficial to those who want to take advantage of the full power of the phone--you can upload custom ROM, install apps to SD Card, etc--but it comes with obvious danger such as turning your once functional phone into a very expensive paperweight. If you're not the most tech savvy we recommend you sit this one out, but for the rest of you--go right to your rooting needs!

Here are the instructions on how to root your myTouch 3G as posted by Amon_RA of XDA developers.

HTC Magic Has Sold 1 Million Units

4

HTC CEO Peter Chou has just revealed that HTC's Second Android Device, the HTC Magic (or T-Mobile myTouch 3G or Google Ion), has just surpassed 1 million units sold. The Magic was launched in many parts across the world in April but just launched in the US this August. The HTC Magic is a definite success for HTC and we can assume that they hope that the HTC Hero (which just launched in Taiwan) will replicate the same levels of success. The more Android users in the world, the better!

Are you one of the million who own a HTC Magic, T-Mobile myTouch 3G, or Google Ion?
