HTC Merge pops up in Best Buy's internal system

3

The HTC Merge (check out our hands-on) has popped up in Best Buy's system, hopefully a sign that we will see a release soon. Even though a recent rumor has suggested the device is being delayed in order to implement LTE, Verizon could be trying to push a launch soon. As you can see from the picture, the system highlights a variety of HTC devices attached to Verizon; the Merge sits comfortably next to the Incredible.

Hopefully we'll find out if we'll be seeing the Merge before Christmas we that we can get our hands on all of that goodness. Submitted via the Android Central App

HTC Mecha (Incredible HD) on Verizon -- with LTE, the new Sense and Android 2.2

78

This isn't the first picture of the HTC Mecha (aka the Incredible HD and "Evo-like device coming to Verizon") that's out there, but this is the first time we've seen one powered up -- and it's a good thing it is. Because we now see Android 2.2, the new HTC Sense and -- if you squint just right at the top -- that 4G symbol points to LTE data on Verizon. (And that notification light should make a few of you happy.)

We're told it's currently in testing and that it's consistently getting 9Mbps downstream and 5Mbps upstream -- not too shabby, though real-world results likely will vary.

As for when we might see such a device? It's still pretty unlikely before the first of the year. We've got a full shot of the phone after the break. Thanks, Ed!

Sprint Premier customers invited to preorder Galaxy Tab

15

If you belong to the not so elite Sprint Premiere club, you probably got an e-mail at some point today inviting you to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Sprint will gladly ship one to you for only $399.99 on a two-year contract. Well, it's actually $449.99 and then you have to deal with mail-in instant rebate but we're guessing that won't be a deal-breaker for you. Toss in a data plan, starting at $29.99 for 2GB and you're ready to rock and roll! If you're still on the fence, be sure to check out our hands on with the Sprint version. [Sprint]

Bing: It's not just for Verizon anymore

32

For those of you looking longingly at your friends on Verizon as they Bing their way through the day, take note. If you find yourself constantly asking "How can I get that wonderful Bing Decision Engine on my phone?", pay heed: Bing (read our full review) is now available on every phone, every carrier, for every decision.

That's right, for the low, low price of free in the Android Market, you can forgo Google, forsake the search engine that brought you this fair Android operating system, and Bing your way through life. It's OK. We won't tell. [Bing]

Swype for Android beta updated

39

For those of you rocking the Swype beta -- ie it did NOT come presinstalled on your phone -- it just got a pretty sizable update. Here's the full changelog:

  • Resolved an accuracy issue that was introduced in the last Beta update. New software features supporting additional languages were included in the beta before the test plan for those features was complete (it is a beta after all). Subsequent testing identified the accuracy issue and corrections made. These new tests have been incorporated into our regression testing to prevent future accuracy issues.
  • Added Double-Tap-to-Edit and Cursor Restore
  • Added microphone button (QWERTY only. Requires Google Voice Search be pre-integrated in your phone’s ROM)
  • Added French & EXPERIMENTAL Chinese Pinyin languages
  • Modified new word priority defaults. The word-choice-window will now be ordered more intelligently when encountering custom dictionary words
  • Fixed a bug where an extra space would be added when replacing a word by Swyping after opening the word choice window
  • Improved the "Hidden-Word" dialog handling so it doesn't show up as often (more improvements to this next time)
  • Improved prediction when handling various path collisions
  • Lots of minor bug fixes

The tl;dr version:  Better, faster, with voice-to-text, finally. Now only if Swype would put this in the market. For those of you already in the beta, head to beta.swype.com/android/get to update your installer. For everybody else, well ... [Swype] Thanks, Sean!

Droid 2 Global gets root and bootstrapping

4

Some lucky folks out there have managed to already receive their shipments for the Droid 2 Global and with that, some have even taken the time to put it to the test to see if it can be rooted and bootstrapped. Which, appears to be possible using the regular Droid 2 methods. But of course, we do have to advise that you exercise caution if you choose to give it a run through. With that disclaimer out of the way, anyone get their Droid 2 Global? If so, let us know in the forums. We'd love to see some sexy pics and unboxings. [DroidLife]

Best Buy to feature Nexus S materials as soon as Nov. 14 [rumor]

16

When it rains, it often pours -- Nexus S (or Nexus Elite, or Nexus 2; pick your poison at this point) rumors are no different.  The fellows at Android Police have got their hands on an internal screen from Best Buy, showing that promotional materials, and possibly some sort of dummy unit, are scheduled to be set up by Nov. 14.  We checked with our Best Buy source, and while they can't confirm, they say it certainly looks to be in order.  Maybe those "mistakes" at the Best Buy website weren't off the mark after all?

Who else will be trucking out to Best Buy come Sunday? [Android Police]

Samsung Elite /Nexus S / Nexus 2 pics from the wild

69

Call it the Samsung Elite, the Nexus 2, or the Nexus S -- finally some photos have cropped up.  Engadget has a handful of shots of what they are calling the Nexus S, complete with packaging labeled "i9020."  There's a SIM card slot, if you had any doubt of a GSM device. If you don't want to get your hopes up based on a Best Buy snafu, these should certainly give you some hope.  Hit the source link to see the complete set. [Engadget]

Sprint Epic 4G Froyo leak made available to all

21

Last weekend when the Froyo leak for the Epic 4G rolled out, there was a bit of consternation about the folks that had the leak not wanting to share it with the public-at-large.  Somebody, somewhere decided that this needed changing, and the leak is now available for download and flashing.  You'll need to be rooted of course, and bug reports vary wildly, from no issues to plenty of force closes and reboots.

If you're that kind of guy (or gal), grab the file at the source and give it a go! [XDA-Developers] Thanks Casey!
