Google says missing apps are back in the Android Market (updated)

15

Update: And just like that, Google says its fix is in place and developers are seeing their apps again. Huzzah! [Google, Google Developer blog]

Original: Apps have been disappearing from the Android Market for a good many of you (and us) for a few days now, and you've been screaming for answers. And we hear you. And, believe it or not, Google's heard you, too. Here's what Google told us about the problem:

"We are aware of an app visibility issue with certain recent devices. We believe it to be a device configuration problem and are working on a workaround."

We know, we know. You guys and gals won't be happy until the apps are back in the Market like they should be. But remember that there are thousands and thousands and thousands of you using the Android Market, and we don't wan things to get worse. (But that said, let's get this fixed, Google, m'kay?)

Qik video chat demo on the Evo 4G

25

We've already taken a walk through the basic functions of the updated Qik video chat app for the Evo 4G -- now let's take a look at video chat in action. Check it out after the break as Jerry and I give things a go, with both of us connected over WiFi, though even that couldn't make up for the server crush everybody's putting on Qik.

Yes, folks, the Galaxy S is 'landing soon'

33

Yes, folks, it's all but official that the Samsung Galaxy S (see our hardware and software hands-ons) is coming the U.S. Only questions are when and to which carrier. (OK, those are pretty big questions.) But the flying saucer we got says it's "Landing soon," and there's a new U.S. website up and running, so things are definitely on the move. If you're in the mood for some unsubstantiated rumors, TMoNews says it's heard of a possible July 21 launch on T-Mobile, and there's a Verizon rumor going around, plus that one on AT&T. But there's nothing to back up most of that other than a big pile of salt, so ... Stay tuned, everyone! [Samsung]

Update: Oh, yeah. Samsung's having a little party on June 29, so we'll likely find out more then.

Evo 4G out of stock on Sprint's website

18

If you're looking to snag an Evo 4G, you're going to have to hoof it, as it's currently out of stock on Sprint's website. Sprint's said the Evo set a one-day launch record, and it must not have been kidding. We haven't heard hard numbers, but whispers have it at several hundred thousand sold over last weekend. Thanks, djjk2004!

LG Optimus: Rooted!

12

A note to anybody with an Android smartphone: Don't leave it sitting around Paul from MoDaCo, or he's liable to root the thing on principal. Such is the case with the LG Optimus (aka the GT540 -- see our hands-on at Google IO), which he cracked open in what may well be record time. Good on ya, Paul! [@paulobrien]

Front-facing cameras mean hands-free gesture commands for Android

11

Waving your hand in the air to control your phone isn't a new idea -- we've seen talk of it before on Windows Mobile, and it's been implemented on other platforms. But now that Android is getting front-facing cameras (with the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Evo 4G, for starters), we may finally see gesture commands on our phones in the near future.

And that's where developer eyeSight comes in. It just announced support for Android, which "enables users control their phones and navigate in documents, web pages or maps by using gesture recognition technology."

Check out the full presser and demo video (on a Nokia, sadly) after the break. This pique anyone's interest?

Throwing a bone (and a free case) to the Verizon Droid Incredible [contest]

We know. You Droid Incredible owners have had to sit through an awful lot of Evo 4G news of late, and you're feeling a little left out. We hear you. But there's actually been some great stuff going on in the Droid Incredible forums, and it hasn't gone unnoticed. As such, let's reward your patience with a free Verizon High-gloss silicone protective case for one lucky beloved Droid Incredible, courtesy of the Android Central Store.

What do you have to do? Just keep on doing what you're doing. When you post in the Incredible forums today -- as in June 8 -- you're automatically entered. We'll pick a single post at random tonight and get your new case shipped off post haste. Good luck, everybody!

Toss the HTC Intruder into the Android mix (Update: Probably)

8

We can't vouch for anything here, but the inventory shot you see above apparently shows the HTC Intruder on AT&T. Maybe it's yet another name in the Liberty/Aria lovefest, giving us a proper threesome of rumor goodness. Or maybe it's an entirely different phone. Or maybe it's a last gasp of Windows Mobile. Or (gasp) maybe it's some way early entry for Windows Phone 7. Or maybe it's something like the HTC Smart, which has a Sense-type UI but is neither WinMo nor Android.

Point is, it's early yet, and this is all we have to go on. Also no way to tell whether that $699 retail price/$129 contract price is real, or just a placeholder. Any AT&T peeps out there wanna help shed some light on this? You know where to find us. [TjCrew via Unwired View]

Update: OK. We're already hearing that this will be an Android 2.1 device, about the size of a Coke can (presumably in two dimensions only). Also, Omegaglory23 points out in the comments that this is a Radio Shack inventory screen.

Evo 4G help: Using the LED light application with video recording

28

We love it when you send in your tips and hints, especially when they're this cool.  Notice that the dual LED flash on the HTC Evo doesn't work while filming video? Turns out that's pretty easy to fix, using an app called LED light right from the Android Market.  No root, no muss, no fuss.  Hit the jump to get the links, and to see side by side examples with and without the camera flash. Thanks Jpeary!

Monday night mayhem: Comment at will

79

It's been a crazy day. We've been playing with the Qik video chat. We had to choke down another Apple keynote. We saw the Nexus One disappear and then reappear -- yes, it's back now -- from Google's online phone store. And on top of all that, you've all been going nuts in the forums. So let's wind down tonight with a little free chat in the comments. Talk amongst yourselves. You've earned it.
