Verizon Samsung Fascinate on sale now online for $199, in stores Thursday

30

It's that time, folks. The Verizon Samsung Fascinate is now available online for $199.99 after two-year contract and mail-in rebate. You're still going to have to wait a day before it's in stores (or for them to ship it to you, for that matter). But what's a few more hours, right? [Verizon] Thanks, Kyle!

Oh, yeah. And it's buy-one-get-one. But you already knew that, right?

Hands on with Archos' slate of slates at IFA 2010

24

Archos brought no fewer than five models of its new "internet tablets" to IFA 2010: Archos 28, Archos 32, Archos 43, Archos 70, and Archos 10.1. We're fond of pretty much all of them. They all run Android 2.2 Froyo and have a "light" skin that doesn't get in the way too much. The larger ones rock a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor that doesn't exactly make them sing, but definitely keeps up and along with some graphics acceleration makes display of 720p HD video a breeze.

One choice we're not so sure about is the decision to toss the main Android buttons - Home, Menu, Search, and Back - into the screen itself instead of having them be dedicated hardware buttons. It means that for certain things - like watching video - you're two taps away from what should really be a one-tap experience.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt delivers closing keynote at IFA 2010

5

Google CEO and Chairman of the Board Eric Schmidt took the stage today in Berlin at IFA 2010 to deliver the closing keynote speech for the world's largest consumer and electronics trade show.  Schmidt spoke about the new technology that Android offers, such as voice translation, voice search, and Google street view, noting that these types of technology used to be classed as 'science fiction'.  Schmidt also spoke about Google Chrome, and an excellent demo was shown.

Speaking of demos -- GoogleTV's official twitter account reminds us that there is a great demo of the upcoming GoogleTV product (due in the U.S. sometime this fall) that you can watch right here, as part of the full IFA 2010 keynote presentation (at about 32:00.

The full press release is after the break, where you can read how executive director of the IFA Jens Heithecker compares Schmidt to Einstein.  Yes, that Einstein.  [IFA@GoogleTV]

HTC holding a free event in London on September 15

13

Last month, we reported that HTC was planning to hold an event in London on Sept. 15. That event is and remains press-only and looks to be an unveiling of a new phone, or phones, and possibly a tablet or unicorn. If you're not in the press and still want to attend an HTC event on the same day, they have scheduled a free meet-up at Redhook, a seafood restaurant in Central London.

According to HTC's Facebook page, there will be food, drinks, music and phones (to play with) for attendees. They did also say that they will be giving some devices out, so you could wind up with a free new phone!

So if you live anywhere near London you should check it out! It's free and is something to look forward to on a Wednesday night! [HTC's Facebook Event]

Samsung announces dual-core processor, codenamed Orion

20

No, not that Orion. Put that Google Sky Map away. We're talking about Samsung's new dual-core processor will be seen at the annual Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum in Taiwan. The new processor, codenamed Orion, will feature a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores: "designed specifically to meet the needs of high-performance, low-power mobile applications including tablets, netbooks and smartphones." LG also announced earlier today that it will taking advantage of new dual-core Tegra 2 in future devices. We're definitely getting more and more excited about these faster processors. What do you guys think? Full press release after the break.

Adobe uses small words, pictures, to show which phones Flash supports

30

We don't know about you, but the last thing we want to worry about when determining whether our smartphones are supported is what exactly what processor it's running. And Adobe apparently thinks so, too, fighting some FUD that appeared late last week over which phones it supports for Flash Player 10.1. (Seriously, folks? Somebody thought they'd take Flash away from the original Droid just weeks after it got it?)

For those of you who refuse to click through to the link, here are the phones Adobe Flash currently supports, and how you can get Flash Player 10.1 for them:

  • Nexus One: Download from Android Market.
  • Sprint Evo 4G: Included in Android 2.2 update from HTC.
  • HTC Desire: Included in Android 2.2 update from HTC.
  • Motorola Droid: On devices with Android 2.2 (build FRG22C or higher).
  • Motorola Droid 2: Pre-installed at launch.
  • Motorola Droid X: Will be included in upcoming Android 2.2 update.

So that's that. If you're phone's not on that list, fear not, as Adobe will be updating as time and updates go on. And if you haven't yet, be sure to check out our interview with Adobe platform evangelist Ryan Stewart. [Adobe]

Update: Yes, the Droid Incredible is missing. Yes, Adobe will add it. No, we had nothing to do with it.

Motorola i1 -- Sprint/Nextel's push-to-talk Android phone

8

The Motorola i1 is neither big, nor bad, but it certainly fills a niche that many believe is dying off -- push-to-talk on the IDEN network.  Applications and services from other carriers try to replicate it, but if you've ever used an actual "chirp" phone (either because you wanted to or otherwise) you know it's not the same.  Those who need PTT service on their phone now have an Android choice, so let's have a look and see if it would be a wise choice to make after the break.

Best Buy backs off the Samsung Gem

3

Whoopsie. Looks like when Best Buy showed off the Verizon Samsung Gem in its buyer's guide, it did so a little prematurely. It's unknown whether the correction you see above means the phone's not happening, or if it's just postponed. Stay tuned, folks. Thanks, bxojr.

Google Voice now alerts to missed calls

9

Google Voice just added another feature to its arsenal -- missed-call notifications in your inbox. That's less of a big deal for those of us using it on our Android phones -- you'll see the missed call on your handset -- but as more of us use Google Voice on the desktop, it makes sense. You have options to have missed calls noted in the Google Voice inbox, or you can have them e-mailed to you. [Google Voice]
