Samsung continues commercial onslaught, and there was much rejoicing

It would seem Samsung is making no effort to slow down their marketing juggernaut, despite the myriad of current events surrounding them.

The video highlights the same voice features we saw in the second commercial, which is nice, but regardless, don't be like the driver before he gets his voice commands. It's dangerous and isn't worth the risk. Alright, off the soapbox.

At any rate, I think we can all agree he must not be using his Galaxy S2 on Sprint. Thanks, Kenny!

Dog Wars Android app is ruffling some users' fur -- and rightfully so

Judging from our inbox this morning, more than a few of you have discovered the Dog Wars app. We'd been hoping it would slink back into the depths from which it slithered, but such is not to be the case.

Dog Wars, which some sort of horrific canine RPG, is doing its best to stoke the fires, announcing itself as "A GAME THAT WILL NEVER BE IN THE IPHONE APP STORE!!!" And you know what? Apple's App Store is better off for it. The developer, Kage Games, also wants you to know that "if you have a bug up your butt about the game concept, remember:"

  1. It is just A VIDEO GAME
  2. Perhaps one day we will make gerbil wars or beta fish wars for people who can't understand fantasy role play games
  3. Just because something is illegal in real life in certain countries, does not mean it is illegal to make a song, movie, or video game about it (looking at you XDA Developer Forums... deleting our beta testing thread and banning our account?!)
  4. Just go slingshot some virtual birds to kill some virtual pigs.
  5. Go complain to someone who cares about Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Weed Farmer, Smoke a Bowl (these two are listed in the top 15 of casual games on Android Market) and maybe even Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry from 1987.
  6. This is listed as a HIGH MATURITY app, and does NOT violate the Terms of Use with the Google market in any way!!!

A few of the one-star comments left in the Market:

  • "This represents the truly revolting world of dog fighting, dogs are still stolen daily for fights. Remove it now!" - Alex
  • "Hope you people get prison time for making this app." - devon
  • "This is pretty awful... Downloaded this just to say how very wrong this is, both in real life and in fantasy." - nonfinite

And a couple of e-mails we've received:

  • "This is so sick I can't believe it! Have you people learned nothing from
Michael Vick???? Way to encourage this disgusting violence against innocent animals.....studies indicate that most serial killers who hurt animals move on to people. This is SICK. WTF android????!!!!!" - Diane
  • "I cannot believe that you as a leader in this industry would promote dog
fighting with an app!! Dog wars should be removed from the android market! This is very disappointing for me and many others to see that Android would do this!" - Dawn

We're not sure if the 50,000-250,000 download mark is because people downloaded the free beta just to leave 1-star comments (let's hope so), or if it's really that popular (let's hope not). But we do know this: If we were Google, we'd probably find some sort of term of use that Kage Games has broken -- or invent a new one -- and fast, and get this sort of thing out of the Market.

Download links are not after the break. Here, however, is the the developer's e-mail address: pitboss@kagegames.com. Let 'em know how you feel. And tell 'em we sent ya.

New Moto Droid Pro software update available: ActiveSync, VPN benefit

Set to roll out in phases, a software update for Android's candy bar with a keyboard, the Motorola Droid Pro, released late this week adds data encryption of contents stored on the microSD card and the phone itself along with a slew of other enhancements.  Amongst the changes,  Exchange ActiveSync received a healthy update to it's policies, email, and calendar, plus some bug fixes.  IPSec VPN joined forces with Google's VPN and combined their settings menus.  A proxy server can now be defined within the Wi-Fi settings and Verizon's marked it with their VCAST app.  Some other minor bugs are squashed with the update as well.  Full release notes after the break.  [Twitter]

T-Mobile G2X source code now available for download

Despite the T-Mobile G2X having already been rooted and equipped with ClockworkMod, there are still a few things developers out there would like to look at. We can now check source code off that list though as LG has put the download up on their website for all. It may not mean a lot to the everyday user but, the source code should help plenty of developers out there get started on cooking up some custom ROM for this sexy, beast of a device. Hit the source link to get started, after that just search for "LG P999" and it will pop right up for ya. [LG via Android Police]

Best Buy pre-sale of the Wi-Fi only HTC Flyer starts April 24

Best Buy has the exclusive launch of the WiFi only, 7-inch HTC Flyer tablet covered, and now they've announced their pre-sale date as being April 24. If you simply must have the HTC Sense-loving, 1.5GHz-powered Flyer, then you'll want to hit up Best Buy on that date and let them know you are more then willing to give them $499 in exchange for one. Personally, we're still wishing it was being launched with Honeycomb but some of the HTC added enhancements such as the built in Scribe technology do counter that a little. Anybody planning on a pre-sale order? [Best Buy]

The HTC Sensation and ... flowers

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Alex Dobie, our man in the UK, met up with the HTC Roadshow today in Manchester and brings us this painfully quick look at some flowers ... on the new HTC Sensation. Don't worry, he's got more to come from the event -- of phones, not flowers (we hope), so stay tuned, boys and girls.

Dell's 10-inch tablet gets a name, specs: Meet the Dell Streak Pro

We've been talking in the forums about specs for the rumored Dell Streak Pro -- the 10-inch tablet that's coming -- and now we've got the pic to back it up. So what you're looking at is a 10-inch tablet at 1280x800 resolution (that's normal for that size), running Honeycomb. No surprises there. Also mentioned is the newer Tegra T25 processor. Noyce. It'll be "data only," meaning don't expect to do voice calls on this thing, unless it's VOIP. And to that end it's got a pair of microphones for video chat.

Codenamed the "Gallo," the Streak pro also is said to have an "enterprise application stack," which should be good for you suits out there, and Dell's "Stage 1.5" user interface. What's not mentioned in this spec sheet is a possible USB host and client, or a dock with an ethernet port, both of which we'd love to see.

And that June date at the top goes against a report just a couple weeks ago that said the tablet was being pushed back to fall. Of course, this is as unofficial is that rumor, so we'll all just need to wait and see. Thanks, anon!

Nexus S 4G accessories in some Sprint stores

See our Nexus S 4G accessories guide

While we would much rather see the phone that goes in it, Nexus S 4G cases on the shelves at a Sprint store has to be a good sign.  An observant reader sent us this, and it gets us a little tingly.

We've seen Best Buy pre-order pages and order pages, and Sprint is spotlighting the nexus S 4G on their page.  It can't be too long now, it just can't.  Or can it? [via the Android Central app] See More Nexus S Accessories

HBO Go coming to 'selected' Android phones May 2

Remember a couple of days ago when we had a look at HBO Go, a new video streaming service in the works for HBO subscribers?  The video posted had a not-so-subtle hint that the service would launch on May 2, and it seems that Direct TV has confirmed this via their official Twitter account.

No word on what phones are going to be part of the "selected" few, but it stands to reason that it will be a DRM requirement of sorts, much like Netflix is doing.  I guess we'll know all the details shortly, as May is almost upon us. [@DIRECTV via @BigRickz10]
