Droid X sees price, and internal memory drop

21

The Motorola Droid X has just seen an across the board price drop, ranging from $149.99 (with a 2 year agreement) at Verizon's website, to a whopping $9.99 (see above) with a two year plan at Costco.  A big player in the price reduction may be the fact that Motorola has decreased the internal memory from 16 GB to 2 GB.  Or maybe it has something to do with the Droid X2 leak that came and went and the X is reaching the end of its short life.

In any case, if you've been eyeing one, now would be a good time to grab it before its too late, and maybe you'll get lucky and find one on the shelf that still has the 16 GB of memory.  [Android Central forums] Thanks anon and everyone who sent this one in!

Norwegian family finds HTC Tattoo entombed in butter

0

While we're all gawping at the latest and greatest HTC phones from MWC, spare a thought for the poor old HTC Tattoo, released as a budget phone in 2009, sporting Android 1.6 and a resistive touchscreen. Its glory days have long since past, and now it's only given any attention when it shows up in bizarre or unexpected situations like this...

According to Norwegian news site VG.no, a man named Tone Thorsrud was surprised to find a HTC Tattoo buried inside in a tub of butter last weekend during a meal with his family. What's even more surprising is that the phone had survived its buttery ordeal and Thorsrud was actually able to power it on. However the lockscreen has prevented him from using it, so the newly-unearthed device may never be reuinted with its owner.

Thorsrud reflected on his strange discovery, saying "it was quite a festive dinner. It is not every day you find a cell phone in the butter."

We couldn't agree more. The offending butter company has reportedly apologized to Thorsrud and is investigating further. [VG.no via Google Translate]

Costco getting ready for the Motorola Xoom on Feb 24

32

If you're waiting for the Motorola Xoom, and a Costco member, Feb 24 looks to be a lucky day.  A tipster just sent us in this image of an internal Costco doc all about the new Honeycomb tablet, complete with a few juicy details:

  • Wireless reps at Costco will be receiving their demo device on on or about Feb 22.
  • A pallet full 'o Xoom will be shipped to each store for display on Feb 24.
  • You'll be forced to sign up for at least a month-to-month or pay as you go plan before they will sell it to you.
  • And maybe most interesting -- they'll have 10 reasons why you should ditch the iPad.

While pricing would have been nice, it seems like nobody has a straight answer for that one.  If we find out, we'll be sure to let ya know.  Thanks anon!

With well over 50,000 downloads in just a few hours, Words with Friends for Android is already a huge success.  Yes, there's a few kinks to work out, but we totally expect Zynga to get everything sorted in short order.  They're Zynga -- games is what they do.  Like you guys, we've been waiting for this one to hit Android and now that it's here we've set aside a small fenced in area in the forums just for it.  In the Words with Friends Lounge you can forget all about the carrier discussion, debate about who makes the best Android phone, and even the endless hacking some of us like to discuss after we've broken things customized our phones.

Jump in and find someone to play against, discuss strategy, do a little friendly trash-talk, and anything else WWF related.  And if you have friends with an iOS phone/pod/pad/thingy, invite them over -- we love everyone in the lounge.  If you haven't already, you can grab Words with Friends for Android after the break. Froyo EB13 release imminent for the Sprint Epic 4G?!

53

Taking under consideration the customer support page showing how exactly to install the update has had some changes made to it today, it seems as though the roll-out of the Froyo EB13 update for the Sprint Epic 4G is imminent. Although we've not heard anything even remotely official from Samsung or Sprint as of yet, we'll be keeping an eye out to see if they start pushing it out to users. If you happen to see the update pop-up on your device, be sure to let us know as well won't you? [Sprint] Thanks, Daryel!

"I" version of Android will combine features of Gingerbread and Honeycomb

30

Live here at Mobile World Congress, we just got word from Eric Schmidt that the next version of Android will combine the feature set of Honeycomb and Gingerbread. Schmidt didn't give any details on naming (we've heard both Ice Cream and Ice Cream Sandwhich), but it'll definitely be the "I" version of Android. Looks like some of our favorite Honeycomb features will be making their way to phones.
