Hands-on with Log Me In Ignition VNC beta for Android smartphones

From time to time, it's pretty darn handy to be able to access -- and control -- a desktop computer from your phone. Maybe you're the IT-type, maybe it's a family member who swears they don't know where all those racy pop-ups are coming from. Either way, a good VNC client can sure come in handy. And Log Me In Ignition is now in beta, and we took it for a test drive. Check it out after the break.

2.1 update for Sprint Hero not coming Friday after all?
Remember that little update thing all us Sprint Hero users were waiting for on May 7 -- Tomorrow? According to the admin at Sprint's official forums, it ain't coming. No details of any kind, just what you're seeing in the screen grab above. As infuriating as it may be, we have to remember that Sprint needs to weigh the need for an update against the end user experience, and only wants to release a product as free of bugs as possible. Ask a Motorola Droid user, they know all about it.
I have confirmed with someone at Best Buy Mobile that the screen shot of the internal memo about the upgrade was legit, so now all we can do is sit back and speculate as to what happened. My guess is Godzilla attacks. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Google Goggles updated, brings update language translation with it

Android 1.6+ We were there in February in Barcelona when Google first demonstrated the language translation power of Google Goggles. [Market link] Today, it's gotten even better. Version 1.1 brings translation for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, and that's just the start. There's also better bar code recognition, more artwork and logos are in the database, the app's user interface has been improved, and you can search using images already in your phone's gallery. Samsung Galaxy A now available in South Korea

The Samsung Galaxy A, not to be confused with the Samsung Galaxy S, is now available in South Korea. The Galaxy A runs Android 2.1 and features a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED screen, 720 MHz processor, and DivX support. It also packs a front-facing camera for video calls, 5-megapixel back facing camera for pictures, and support for T-DMB, which is basically Mobile TV. Surprisingly, given that Samsung is a Korean company, the Samsung Galaxy A is Samsung's first Android device in Korea
Apps will be available for download in the Android Market, SK Telecom T-store, and Samsung's own app store Samsung Apps. In all, it sounds like an awesome phone. It's incredibly cool to see Android tweaked and tailored to fit a country's needs. Thank you versatility. [samsung via samsunghub]

Google returning sales tax to some Nexus One owners

If you own a Google Nexus One, check your inboxes, folks. We're getting reports in the forums about Google sending out e-mails alerting that too much tax was paid, and a refund is on the way. FWIW: Looks like I was charged the proper 7.5 percent sales tax on both of the Nexus Ones I've purchased, but our pal Philip Berne from PhoneScoop (in addition to our esteemed forum members) got an e-mail, too. Anybody else out there have a refund on the way? Sound off in the forums and be sure to mention what state you live in. (Euphoria, paranoia or one of the lower 48.) Full text of the e-mail is after the break. [Android Central forums]

Clear outs two new Android 4G handsets -- one HTC, one Samsung
By
afazel | May 05 2010 | 9:03 pm |

Here's something I thought a few of you out there in Android Central land just might be a little bit interested in. Clear has posted exception first quarter results for 2010! Oh, and by the way, the company expects to see two new Android 4G handsets on its 4G WiMax network by the end of the year. The company says a device is on the way from Samsung as well as from HTC. Both phones will be 3G/4G with WiFi support. They're keeping their lips sealed, for now, about the details, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Evo 4G on Sprint as the offering from HTC. There's plenty of info at the source link, for the dull accounting types among us. [BusinessWire]

Sprint Evo 4G pre-orders available at Radio Shack 'later this month'

Wanna pre-order the Sprint Evo 4G at Radio Shack? (We're not calling it The Shack no matter how many times people in suits try to be cool.) Look for the pre-ordering to begin "later this month." That's pretty vague. Could be tomorrow, could be three weeks. And it still doesn't point to any actual availability. Could be late May, could be early June, could be late June, could be July.
Sooner's probably more likely than later, given that the New York launch party is next week, and we've already seen an Evo 4G pop up in a store. Think you know when it's launching? Try your luck in our Evo 4G Launch Prediction forum thread. [via Phandroid]
