What you need to know

  • Android 11 may be released on September 8.
  • A video uploaded to the Google Developers channel on YouTube pegs that as the date of release.
  • Google has yet to officially announce a release date for Android 11, but the first or second Tuesday of September gels with previous releases.

Android 11 just got its first public beta, and we might know when the operating system is set to be released. As per a release date spotted in a "Works with Hey Google Smart Home Summit" video, the next big Android release is to launch on September 8th.

Google launched Android 10 on September 3rd, the first Tuesday of September last year, so the date would fit well in line with what we got last year.

It's not clear why Google would announce Android 11's date via this method, and it's likely that it wasn't intended. But as far as we know, Android 11 is set to launch on the 8th of September, barring any changes in schedule.

To recap, Android 11 is mostly an under the hood update, with a few cosmetic changes including a revamped media player, a device controls screen, and tighter privacy controls. There's an initial beta out right now but most users are encouraged to wait for more stable builds before hopping on.
