We're a little ways away from a full review of this phone, especially after T-Mobile explained that the version we've got here is running on pre-production software, but with your help in the forums we can start putting this phone through its paces and start exploring LG's new Android 5.1 experience. In pictures: The LG G4 vs. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge

43

Two of the top Android manufacturers bring curves in all the right places, but in very different ways.

Two of this year's hottest phones are also two of the sleekest. The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge has the best of what Samsung has to offer thus far this year and gives it an impossible design. Meanwhile, LG takes what it's been doing so well the past couple of years and continues down that path with the LG G4.

And here's how they stand up next to each other.

In pictures: The LG G4 vs. LG G3

33

LG takes a great phone and makes it even better as we look at the G3 versus the G4.

You're LG. You've made an excellent phone in 2014's LG G3. You've got a design language that stands out, and stands on its own. So what do you do in 2015? You certainly don't stop what's working, and that's the case with the new LG G4, just unveiled in New York City and London.

If you've seen or used the G3 at all, you're going to be pretty familiar with the G4. Same overall look and feel. But the devil is in the details, and LG's done some great stuff with the little things this year.

This is the LG G4 — in leather

LG G4 leather back

The idea of a leather-clad phone is no longer crazy, and the optional back for the LG G4 is a beauty.

This is the LG G4. In leather. And while LG can't claim to be the first phone in recent memory to sport cowhide on its hide — the 2014 Moto X also did so, and did it well (and in several color options) — LG is doing things different here, with a swappable leather back for its latest and greatest Android smartphone.

And this is another one of those annoying instances in technology in which pictures really don't do it justice. We're still overcoming the shock of the skeuomorphic era, in which we made things to look like other things. But this, folks, is the real deal.

LG G4 hands-on: Where vegetable tanning, ceramics and Quantum Display come to play with Android

LG G4

Spend a few minutes with the new LG G4 and this much is apparent: LG is getting even more comfortable with the fact that it can make one hell of a smartphone, and do so in a way that's not just different, but also really good.

How good? You don't put your new phone side by side against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S6 in a room full of journalists who have been singing its praises for weeks without being extremely confident in your product.

We've spent a little bit of time with the LG G4 here in New York City ahead of the unveiling at 1 World Trade Center — enough time for a quick hands-on, but not enough to answer some burning questions and really get a feel for if the G4 is as good as LG says it is.

We will, however, explain what a cow, ceramic paint and something that sounds like a James Bond flick have to do with a smartphone.
