Pop quiz: What phone has a vertically sliding keyboard, 600 MHz processor, 3G, aGPS, 192MB of RAM, a 2MP camera and the best darn operating system around? Nope, not the Palm Pre.

Meet the Alcatel OT-980, which sports the aforementioned specs along along with Android 1.6. It's a low-cost device that'll be released in Europe, but it's a form factor we'd love to get a shot with here in the states. Check out the video of it in action after the break. [Frandroid via Intomobile]

For those of you into the cooked ROM thing (check out our FAQ if you're new to that), HTC has just released its source code for the Verizon Droid Eris. What's that mean for you? It's a clean set of code for modders to work from. While it doesn't have to contain proprietary code, it is much better than working from a ROM that's been cobbled together from other devices. [HTC]

Sure, being able dictate e-mails, text messages -- anything you want, really -- to your Nexus One is pretty darn cool. But it comes at a price: There's no comma directly on the on-screen keyboard. OK, you can hold down the period, or switch over to the symbols to get it. But for me, that's one step too many. But you can put the comma back on top of the keyboard, if you don't mind trading voice input to do so. Here are the steps:

1. With the on-screen keyboard open, hold down on ?123 (in the bottom left corner)
2. Choose Android keyboard settings from the pop-up.
3. Uncheck Voice input.

That's it. You'll now have a comma back on top of the on-screen keyboard, at the expense of voice input. You can always turn it back on, though, doing the same steps. [@bck via @palmsolo]

Well lookie what just slipped into our inbox. It's the retail box for the Motorola Devour (aka the Calgary), which we're going to see on Verizon any time now. Looks like the leaked shot we saw a ways back was right on track, as the D-pad's given way to an optical sensor. MotoBLUR gets top billing here, with "Live life for the Story" the Moto motto.

Still no word on when you'll be able to pick one up, but it's got to be soon at this point. Peep a pic of the back of the box after the break.

Update: An astute commenter notes that this likely is the promotions pack being sent to Verizon stores, and that what you'll get when you buy the phone will be different. Makes sense to us.

Ah, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. How we once loved you so much. The latest news regarding the Xperia X10 is that it'll be available on T-Mobile Germany in April. Yes, all the way out in April. That coincides with NTT DoCoMo's April launch of the Smartphone Xperia (same device, different name) so it seems like this device is taking Sony Ericsson's traditionally lengthy time to release (See: Xperia X1).

We played with the Xperia X10 at CES and felt it was a solid phone with an interesting experience. If it was available now, it could be a hit. If we're waiting until April, well, it gets a heck of a lot less exciting and a heck of a lot tougher to succeed considering HTC has a big wave of Android phones coming. We're almost at the point where we're going to ignore whatever Sony Ericsson does until they actually release a phone. Ah, Xperia X10. We wanted to love you so much.

It looks like what we once knew as the Samsung Galaxy Spica will actually be released as the Samsung Galaxy Portal in the UK. T-Mobile UK will be the lucky ones to carry this middling Android device and per usual in the UK, it's available for FREE with certain rate plans. The Galaxy Portal packs a 800 MHz processor which we're going to assume is like the Moment's, a 3.2 inch 320x480 capacitive touchscreen, and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

We played with the Samsung Galaxy Portal (Spica) some at CES but since we've heard about the Galaxy 2, the Spica has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle. Kind of similar to what happened with the original Galaxy. In fact, doesn't it feel like all Samsung Android phones disappear here in the States? Maybe Samsung should re-evaluate their US Android strategy because they're clearly trailing HTC and Motorola.

If for some reason you still think Apple and Google are all buddy-buddy when it comes to accepting your dollars, well, CEO Steve Jobs just put an end to that when addressing his employees at a town hall-style event later in the day. Speaking anonymously to Wired, a tipster says Jobs flat-out called Google's "Don't be evil" motto BS while going on the defensive.

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there’s no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s bullshit.” Audience roars.

Some of that's likely just rallying the troops. But it starts to make you think that possibly Jobs does see Android in his rear-view mirror. [via The iPhone Blog]

It's long been believed that Google's Nexus One was named after a class of robots in Phil K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (enough so that Dick's family has accused Google of trademark violations). But astute AC reader Roger has come up with an alternative theory:

"More Human than Human" by White Zombie. About 3:25 in the song he actually says "I am the nexus one." I get the definition of Nexus One and the idea
behind it, but then it hit me. Android? More Human than Human? Nexus One in
the lyrics. I see a relationship, you?
