Apple today filed a lawsuit against HTC, claiming the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer infringed on 20 patents. CEO Steve Jobs, in a news release, said:

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

We're awaiting official comment from HTC and are taking a look at the lawsuit. Full press release from Apple is after the break. Stay tuned.

Update 2: Just heard back from an HTC spokesman, who said:

We only learned of Apple's actions based on your stories and Apple's press release. We have not been served yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.

Also, Neowin.net brings us this official statement:

“HTC is a mobile technology innovator and patent holder that has been very focused over the past 13 years on creating many of the most innovative smartphones. HTC values patent rights and their enforcement but is also committed to defending its own technology innovations. HTC only learned of Apple’s actions this morning via media reports, and therefore we have not yet had the opportunity to investigate the filings. Until we have had this opportunity, we are unable to comment on the validity of the claims being made against HTC.”

So it seems the unleashing of Android Tablets has began. This one come from the CeBIT trade show in Germany, showing off HiVison which is a Chinese PC maker 7-inch Android Tablet. While it's not the most amazing tablet the price alone has us saying "wow."

"The tablet runs Google Android and has a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen display and an 800MHz ARM11-based processor. It comes with 2GB of storage, 256MB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi. You can add Bluetooth, 3G, and GPS support with USB peripherals. The batter is 4200mAh which should provide up to 6 hours of run time."

This device could sell for as little as $100, though there is no word yet if there are any Western distributors. Video after the break [via liliputing]

We brought you the first pictures of the official Android-MotoBLUR powered T-Mobile-branded Cliq XT, and now we have pricing information to go along with it. Looks like the Cliq XT will be going for $129.99 on contract (that's the U.S.-standard 2-year deal plus whatever rebates may be thrown in), and a very respectable $329.99 off-contract.

Now all we need is the dates the Cliq XT is going to be released. But it can't be far off. [via TMoNews]

It'll be a cold day in hell before you catch an executive talking bad about their product. Case in point: Google CFO Patrick Pichette, who was talking up the Nexus One at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference in San Francisco.

At the event, Pichette called the Nexus One "a benchmark-setter" and said "It's raising everybody's game." Such cheerleading is expected from a CFO, but he reportedly also said that the mood at Google has been "electric" and "we're absolutely delighted with the results" of the Nexus One launch. He's being interviewed because of a prank his workers pulled on him and it's just amazing to see young Schmitty in action. Aside from the general awesomeness of bulletproof glasses, wicked hairstyles, and a VW Bug, you can find glimpses of the Eric Schmidt we know today in the video--emphasizing his words with knowing glances, for example--but he spoke much faster and just seemed so, excited. fresh. enthused. Ah, it's good to be young.

If that borked update for the Motorola Cliq has kept you up nights, there's some relief in sight. The guys and gals at These Are The Droids got Moto to acknowledge there's been an issue, and a workaround has been identified. Said Moto:

Last week, the CLIQ 1.3.18 over-the-air software update began rolling out to consumers. While the vast majority of updates were successful, a very small number of consumers reported a date error and found that, after factory resetting their device, their phone was not functioning properly. We have identified a workaround solution for these consumer

Turns out there it was an issue with the over-the-air nature of the update. And if you're having issues, you can re-update through the SD card using these instructions. Good luck, and let us know how things worked out. [These are the Droids]
