Samsung makes all sorts of electronics (including some nice Android phones), but their name is synonymous with screen technology.  That being said, anytime they chime in about screens or displays, we tend to listen. 

"Structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AMOLED display technology."

That's what Samsung has to say in response to Apple's claim that their new IPS screen is superior to OLED.  Samsung claims that IPS only offers a 3 percent to 5 percent increase in sharpness, at a cost of 30 percent more power use.  They (Samsung) also claim that the Super AMOLED display on the upcoming Galaxy S will offer better viewing angles and contrast than the upcoming iPhone.

We would love to find out for ourselves, but we still don't have a Galaxy S to play with review.  Samsung, toss us a bone so we can help prove your point! [Korea Herald via Electronista]

For those of you following the development of Mozilla's Firefox browser for Android -- also known as Fennec -- you'll be happy to learn that basic multitouch has been added in a development build. This build isn't as polished as the other nightly builds we've been using, and you'll need to uninstall it when switching from a signed build. The Droid Incredible has been a tough nut to crack, with rooting eluding the hacking elite (and thus the rest of us mere mortals, too). But it looks like some real progress has been made, and Shadowmite says a couple of phones have been rooted. It involves getting adb to work while in recovery and needs some pretty precise execution in terms of timing. It ain't pretty, and it's not ready for the mainstream, and you might end up crying in the end. But fear not, Incredible owners, work continues. [XDA Developers via Android Central Forums]

On Monday we brought you some application choices for all the new Evo 4G owners, but we are so dedicated to the rest of you out there we wanted to bring you some more suggestions! Hit the jump and see what we have in store for you this time around! 

Not quite satisfied with the stock firmware on your new HTC Evo?  Or maybe you just have the itch to tinker that comes naturally when some folks get their paws on an Android phone.  Android Central member and all around goof off THE Keith Newman and his cohorts have you covered.

The ROM is a mostly stock version of the latest EVO stock system  (with the OTA fixes in place), but has some very nice custom touches:

• Fully rooted
• Busybox installed and working
• Working 4G :)
• Non essential apps have been moved out of the locked /system partition for easy removal if you don't want them installed
• Some great 3rd party apps are included (courtesy of their respective developers, check the forum thread for details)

If rooting, hacking, and forcing the big black slab that is the Evo to submit to your will is your thing, hit the forums and check out the thread.

It's no great secret that the Evo 4G doesn't do as well as other Android phones when it comes to holding a Wifi signal. In fact, we've got page after page in our forums of how displeased many of you are.

But how does the Evo 4G's Wifi stack up? We put it through a couple of relatively unscientific tests, using the Wifi Analyzer app from the Android Market. Check out our results after the break.

T-Mobile has Father's Day covered, apparently, with a leaked document showing that every phone in TMo's inventory will be free on June 19. TMoNews scored what purportedly is a couple of commercial scripts. We won't know for sure that these weren't ginned up by somebody with 10 minutes to spare until it happens. But in the meantime, you can start pondering over whether you want to walk out with a myTouch 3G Slide, myTouch 3G, G1, Samsung Behold II, Motorola Cliq XT, Motorola Cliq, or Garminfone (dang, that's a lot of Android!) in exchange for a couple of years of service, we assume. The hot app of the year appears to be one that will lock and/or wipe your phone. And as such, Norton -- the longtime virus-cleaner (among other things) -- has the Norton Security app in beta in the Android Market. We're not anywhere close to declaring that we need to worry about spyware, malware and viruses on Android, and Norton's app does well to go beyond that. Features include:

• Remote lock/wipe
• Anti-malware scan.
• Call blocking
• LiveUpdate

It seems to be fairly lightweight, though the lock/wipe feature will be built into Android 2.2, so it'll have to fight that off somehow. More screenies after the break. [Norton]

Today, Google expanded its Google Maps Navigation system to cover 11 more countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland for Android devices running Donut (Android 1.6) and higher. The turn-by-turn directions can be read in the language of your choice and the voice destination search works with the accuracy that we’ve come to expect from Google in French, German, Italian and Spanish for Éclair (Android 2.0/2.1) and up. All of the Google Maps features are enabled in the supported countries, street view, POI search, gas stations, etc. Although Google Maps and Navigation is always a free service, it’s important to remember if you’re traveling, although the Map and Navigation service may be free, the data connection used to run it most certainly is not. If you've got an extra $199 burning a hole in your pocket and are desperately in need of some serious Garmin action on your phone, you can now go out and get the T-Mobile Garminfone. It's the first release in the U.S. from the Garmin-Asus marriage, and it comes based on Android 1.6. Anybody out there getting this guy? [T-Mobile]
