More (yes, more) about the Droid 2

8

droidflyer

We know, the Motorola Droid 2 specs have been leaked in nearly every way, shape or form at this point, but it just doesn't seem to end. A flyer from Verizon has been leaked, confirming most of what we had already known, but either way confirmed information is always welcome. From the flyer we can see that the Droid 2 will ship with Android 2.2 out of the box, so no waiting on the Froyo OTA like the Droid has to. The device will have 8GB of on-board memory along with an 8GB microSD card, will feature the Droid X-like skin, unified inbox, Swype and many more great features we have come to love. One very interesting stat that they claim is 40 percent boost in webpage loading times, but there is no data showing what the competitor in this was. All this information is great and all, Verizon, but can we just have the device now? [via Engadget]

Droid's Froyo update reportedly halted, new build coming next week?

23

Motorola Droid Android 2.2 updateHere we go again, folks. Remember how the Evo 4G first saw an "unofficial" Android 2.2 update before the good one pushed out this week? Looks like pretty much the same thing is going on with the original Motorola Droid.

Trident at Android Forums has it that a showstopper was found in the FRG01B build that came out on Tuesday, which explains why not many people actually got the update over the air. (FWIW: We did our update manually -- see our hands-on here.) And add to that the image sent to Droid Life that you see at right, showing a newer build, FRG22.

Whether FRG22 ends up being the build we finally see released? Well, we'll see. The good news is that just about everybody's in agreement that those of us who updated to FRG01B should be just fine and get another update shortly. Huzzah. [via Android Forums and Droid Life]

Motorola Charm at Best Buy

Hey, look at that. It's the Motorola Charm at Best Buy, listed at $249.99. That's either one of BB's famous placeholder prices, or the unsubsidized price. Either way, we're still no closer to knowing when this thing's actually coming out on T-Mobile, but there you go. [Best Buy] Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Android takes the lead from BlackBerry in Q2, analyst firm reports

42

According to NPD, one of the largest consumer market research companies, Android phones smartphones (or superphones, as Google likes to call it), has out sold the BlackBerry in Q2's sales. Almost every one in three smartphones that are sold today, has Android installed on the device.

The top 5 Android phones sold in the second quarter were:

  1. Motorola Droid
  2. HTC Droid Incredible
  3. HTC EVO 4G
  4. HTC Hero
  5. HTC Droid Eris

It looks like Verizon's and Sprint's marketing efforts have really paid off. (Not to mention HTC, eh?) It's no surprise the Motorola Droid is at the top of that list. Especially with all those Droid commercials Verizon kept on pumping out every few weeks. We're just pretty surprised the HTC Droid Incredible made number 2 on that list. With all those supply shortages with the AMOLED screens and all.

Let's see if RIM's new marketing campaign and the launch of BlackBerry 6 will help them with sales in Q3. They need something other than BBM to help them now. Boast about your Android phone and all of its first-placeness in the comments section. [Business Wire]

Save images from your browser

4

Android tip- save images

One of the great features of the Android browser (and most third-party browsers) is the ability to save any picture you might find on websites. You simply long-press on the image, and a menu pops up. Sometimes you may get several more options if the picture links to another webpage.

Once you save the image, you can quickly find it within your "All downloads" album in your gallery app, or just click on the file once it finishes downloading. As an example, this is a great way to find and use wallpapers for your Android phone. Enjoy!

Archos 8 -- a tiny media player, sports Eclair, available for pre-order

10

Archos 32 PMP

Now for something completely different -- J&R has put up the pre-order page for the Archos 32, a 3.2-inch 8GB personal media player.  Don't hit the back button on your browser just yet, because this little device is big on the spec sheet:

  • 3.2-inch TFT LCD touchscreen at WQVGA (400x240) resolution and 16 million colors
  • Android 2.1, with plans to upgrade to Froyo at release
  • Access to over 2000 apps in the Archos AppsLib app store
  • 800 MHz A8 Cortex processor with OpenGL support
  • 802.11 b/g/n WiFi suport
  • Standard USB connector with USB Host and composite video out
  • VGA camera with camcorder mode
  • Support for every audio and video format I've ever heard of, and a few I haven't

Shazam!  Now pack all this into a 2.5-ounce device with a $147.00 price tag and you've just piqued my interest.  I've searched high and low for a leaked pic to no avail, and no word on just when we'll be seeing this one, but you can sign up to be notified at the pre-order page.  [J&R via NetbooksReview] Thanks Jazz!

HTC Hero in Black

Always had a special place in our hearts for the HTC Hero, even if it is a little long in the tooth. But dress it up in black, and we'd be more than happy to put this guy in our bag as a backup device. It's available now from Cellular South for $79.99 after contract and rebate. [Cellular South] Thanks, @asmith001!
