We snagged some more time with the Galaxy Tab and figured y'all might want to see how the tablet handles some serious games: like Need For Speed Shift and N.O.V.A. The answer: with aplomb. We also take a brief tour through the some of apps that Samsung has customized for the tablet - though sadly the excellent email client wasn't set up with accounts.

Speaking of apps, our number one question during the Q&A session was this: What's Samsung doing to help developers make sure their apps are both compatible and optimized for the Galaxy Tab hardware. The answer: firstly that the vast majority of apps in the Android Market are already compatible, but that there are some apps in the top 200 sellers that aren't working quite yet. Samsung worked with Google to identify the apps and get in contact with the developers and - we hope - provide support to those gentle coders so their apps are ready to rock 1024x600.

The Reader's Hub, by the way, is simply a front end for Kobo eBooks, Zinio Magazines, and PressDisplay Newspapers. Thankfully, all three of those apps are pretty decent - but during the Q&A Samsung didn't rule out the possibility that other carriers might want to emphasize or preinstall other ebook readers.

Ever wish there was just an easier way to check in to the location you are at via Foursquare then to have to open the application and search for it via your devices keyboard? Well, the folks over at Vlingo (see our full review) are always looking to push the envelope on user experience and constantly look for ways to make things easier, and they have done it again. With the recent update to the Vlingo application, users can now use speech to check in to locations, shout out to friends, as well as find out the location of their friends all through some very simple voice commands.

Previously the application supported use of Twitter and Facebook, so the addition of Foursquare is one that will be welcomed by many. Now that checking in is just that much easier, let all your friends know your currently location or shout out to them, just because you can without having to use the devices keyboard. We just returned from the Q&A session after the Samsung Galaxy Tab unveiling, and most of the event was fairly straightforward: a lot depends on the carriers, the European launch is set for "Early October," with more coming before the end of the year, a "major U.S. carrier" is picking up the Galaxy Tab (yeah: we're assuming Verizon, too), and the Tab beats out the iPad in certain areas like portability and the ability to make voice calls.

What was interesting was what happened when future plans popped up. Samsung Mobile's President, JK Shin, got a little feisty and let drop that the Galaxy Tab would definitely be getting the Android 3.0 Gingerbread update. He also went further and said that Samsung would be releasing devices based on the Tablet-friendly "Honeycomb" version of Android next year and that Samsung would have a "full tablet portfolio" in 2011.

Given that Samsung said it was perhaps even more bullish than some analyst numbers that suggested the tablet market in 2011 would top 30 million devices, it looks like they intend on selling a bootload.

We had a bad feeling that when the Skype Mobile app for Android was updated late last night and seemingly allowed calls over Wifi, things were a little too good to be true. And sure enough, they were. At left here is the original description for Version 1.5.0.4, which tells of "Simultaneous Wifi & 3G." That would have been a big deal because the app so far had only worked over Verizon 3G, forcing you to use its data connection, which of course you're paying for. And that, of course, is ridiculous, though you can see Verizon's intent -- it keeps you from buying an unactivated phone and using it as a Wifi VOIP phone when instead you could be burning through your monthly data allotment.

But lo and behold, we have a couple of unactivated Verizon phones here, and sure enough, they freak out when you try to use the updated Skype client. And just a few hours after the initial update, the app description has changed to read "Wifi runs while app is on 3G." So it's just as we feared -- your Wifi connection remains, but you can't actually use it. Shenanigans, indeed.

Update: Skype has published details on the update. In addition to being able to maintain a Wifi connection, you get incoming caller ID, copy-paste in IMs, emoticons, country names and flags when calling internationally, and the ability to set your location as your mood message.

We accepted an invite from Samsung to fly out out to IFA to get an early look at the international version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, their new tablet announced today. You know what that means: Hands-On time!

The Tab is one of many 7 inch tablets about to hit the Market (Samsung is expecting a Q4 release) and it's quite well-done. You'll be forgiven for thinking the Galaxy Tab is just a biggie-sized Galaxy S smartphone running Android 2.2 because, well, that's essentially what it is. To our mind, though, that's not such a bad thing. After the break, find our hands-on video of the device along with some first-look impressions.

There's no escaping it -- you have to compare the Samsung Galaxy Tab to Apple's iPad. One has sold millions in mere months. The other is hoping to break Android into the tablet market big-time. After the break, we match them up, spec for spec.

7-inch Android tablet coming this year

Samsung Mobile today at the IFA conference in Berlin announced the long-awaited (and heavily leaked) Samsung Galaxy Tab -- a 7-inch tablet running Android 2.2 That's right, it's launching with Froyo, folks, a leg up on the vast majority of Android devices, never mind the other tablets available.

The Galaxy Tab has full smartphone connectivity -- 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 -- all in a form factor that you can hold in one hand, powered by a 1GHz processor. Want cameras? The Galaxy Tab has a 3-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, and as 1.3MP camera on the front for video chats.

Is the Galaxy Tab the Android tablet we've all been waiting for? Will it dethrone the iPad? Or even threaten its position? We're just getting started with our coverage, folks. Great news for those of you rocking Skype Mobile on Android -- the app has been updated, and you can now make calls over Wifi, in addition to 3G. That means faster speeds, of course, and no more being forced to use Verizon's data, which is slower, costs you money, and was a pretty specious move to begin with. The bad news is that the Skype app is still exclusive to Verizon (wasn't that supposed to change at some point?). But as long as we're ending the night on a positive note, let's hope that soon changes, too. Thanks, @JasonAGrier
