Nexus One case review: Case-Mate Tough Case

12

Case Mate for Nexus One

I had been resistant to put a case on my Nexus One because I could never find one that I was happy with. They were always either too bulky or felt too cheap.

Having said that, I have been very pleased with the Case-Mate Tough Case; it does not weigh the phone down at all and feels very robust to the touch.

The outer-layer of the case is an ABS plastic shell that has enhanced dust protection. The phone slips inside a smaller rubber skin that then fits inside the tougher case. All buttons and and ports can be accessed without hindrance.

The screen is not covered, but it is protected by the rugged outer layer of the case, so don’t worry if you leave it upside down.

The case also comes in four different colors: black, pink, green and blue, so everybody should be able to find something that fits their lifestyle.

The Case-Mate Tough Case is available for $27.95 from the Android Central Store. More pictures after the break.

T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy Tab to be released Nov. 10

5

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung this morning announced that the Galaxy Tab will be released on T-Mobile on Nov. 10. Pricing wasn't announced, but TMo's website says it'll cost $399 on contract. Also, the press release does allude that the Galaxy Tab will be able to use TMo's HSPA+ network. On board the 7-inch device with Android 2.2 are Qik, Amazon Kindle, Slacker Radio and Samsung Media Hub.

You can sign up for updates at http://mobile-broadband.t-mobile.com/tablets/tablet, and we've got the full presser after the break.

Update: We've done some asking, and PC Mag's Sascha Segan confirms: It's not an HSPA+ device, the press release was just worded funny.

Giant Android mascot let loose in Sydney

Android unleashed on unsuspecting Australians

South Korea might have some real competition on its hands from Australia for title of "Most Random Android Promotion Strategy." The mighty robot you see above is part of Vodaphone Australia's plan to improve customer awareness of the Android OS, but we aren't sure how exactly it does that. Perhaps it yells catchphrases like "Open Source!", "Widgets!", "Flash!", or "Multitasking!" at unsuspecting humans as it wanders the streets, but no one really knows. But we can all agree it might be best to bow down to our new robot Android overlords, and remember, they know what you are saying. [Android Australia via Engadget]

Google is giving away 10,000 Google TV devices -- to developers, that is

0

On Tuesday, Google gave away more than 3,000 Logitech Revue devices to those that attended Adobe's MAX conference in Los Angeles. But Google isn't stopping there. The company also announced on its blog that it would be giving out even more Google TV units -- to developers, of course. But how many more? How about 10,000 more. Though, by the looks of it, the 3,000 given out this morning are included in this lot. So technically, only 7,000 remain, right?

Google is looking to give the remainder of theses devices to developers who are looking to make "the Google TV experience even better." If you're a member of the Google Code community you should go-ahead and apply. If you're not, but you're a professional web developer, you can submit an entry here. You just need to include a short summary of what type of site you're developing for Google TV. Now, who's feeling lucky? [Google TV Blog]

Sony's Android Playstation Phone poses for pictures

56

Sony's Playstation phone

Sony's new phone -- simply dubbed the "Playstation phone" -- has appeared in more pictures. And if there's ever an indication that it's Android-based, well, here you go. It's still very much in prototype form, according to Engadget, but the pictures are unmistakable. This bad boy is Android, through and through. Sure, a custom skin is more than likely. But still.

Above, you see a picture that closely resembles what was predicted in August. Here are the rumored specs:

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • Custom Sony marketplace to buy games designed for a device like this
  • 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8655 (200MHz faster than the G2, but the same new architecture, apparently) -- by the way, that's the same system-on-a-chip as we just saw in the myTouch 4G/HD benchmarks we posted.
  • 512MB of RAM/1GB ROM
  • MircoSD slot -- no Sony Memory Stick -- thank whomever it is you thank for that sort of thing.
  • The screen is between 3.7 and 4.1-inches -- that's a pretty large range, and we're learning toward the larger end.

So when we get down to it, we're looking at Sony's bad-arse Playstation controller coupled with high-end hardware -- higher than just about anything currently available, actually. So the hardware should be set. Let's just hope the software and UI don't blow it. More at the source link. [Engadget]

MyTouch HD shows us a peek at WiFi calling, and sky-high benchmark scores

21

MyTouch HD Quadrant benchmark score

The T-Mobile MyTouch HD (or is the the MyTouch 4G?) makes an appearance once again, this time to show off some under the hood power and some WiFi calling magic.  Above we see the unrooted, stock myTouch pulling off a Quadrant benchmark score of 1890.  I'll pause to let that settle in for a bit.  And we're back, with a most respectable (read: pretty darn fast) Linpack score of 34.34 (photo after the break).  Those kinds of scores are on par with other devices that have been hacked nine ways to Sunday, and it means the MyTouch HD will be fast, right out of the box.

If you're the kind of person who cares more about features than speed, we also get a chance to see WiFi calling running on the MyTouch HD.  We were pretty sure it was there, as it is in the ROM dump, but just seeing it running on the phone itself is pretty satisfying.  Check the screenshot after the break.  Nov. 3 is eight days away, folksThanks to our anonymous friend!
